Guise's stratagem had succeeded. Vic<strong>to</strong>ry passed<br />

over from the Huguenot <strong>to</strong> the royalist side.<br />

The carnage was great. Eight thousand dead<br />

covered the field, among whom was La Brosse,<br />

who had begun the massacre at Vassy. The rank<br />

not less than the numbers <strong>of</strong> the sla<strong>in</strong> gave great<br />

political consequence <strong>to</strong> the battle. The Marshal St.<br />

Andre was killed; Montmorency, severely<br />

wounded, had surrendered himself prisoner; and<br />

thus, <strong>of</strong> the three Triumvirs, Guise alone rema<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

The battle <strong>of</strong> Dreux had crowned him with a<br />

double vic<strong>to</strong>ry, for his immediate appo<strong>in</strong>tment as<br />

lieutenant-general <strong>of</strong> the k<strong>in</strong>gdom, and<br />

commander-<strong>in</strong>-chief <strong>of</strong> the army, placed <strong>France</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

his hands.<br />

This battle left its mark on the Huguenot side<br />

also. The Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Conde was taken prisoner at the<br />

very close <strong>of</strong> the action. Be<strong>in</strong>g led <strong>to</strong> the headquarters<br />

<strong>of</strong> Guise, the duke and the pr<strong>in</strong>ce passed<br />
