mother, but a real dread lest God, who had been<br />

affronted by these dar<strong>in</strong>g acts <strong>of</strong> sacrilege, should<br />

smite <strong>France</strong> with judgment; for <strong>in</strong> that age s<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

statues and crosses, and not div<strong>in</strong>e precepts or<br />

moral virtues, were religion. The impression made<br />

upon the m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> the young k<strong>in</strong>g, especially <strong>in</strong> the<br />

southern prov<strong>in</strong>ces, where it seemed as if this<br />

impiety had reached its climax <strong>in</strong> a general sack <strong>of</strong><br />

holy build<strong>in</strong>gs and sacred furniture, was never, it is<br />

said, forgotten by him. It is believed <strong>to</strong> have<br />

<strong>in</strong>spired his policy <strong>in</strong> after-years.[1]<br />

The Queen-mother had another object <strong>in</strong> view<br />

<strong>in</strong> the progress she was now mak<strong>in</strong>g. It enabled<br />

her, without attract<strong>in</strong>g observation, <strong>to</strong> gather the<br />

sentiments <strong>of</strong> the neighbor<strong>in</strong>g sovereigns on the<br />

great question <strong>of</strong> the age --namely, <strong>Protestantism</strong>--<br />

and <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> a common understand<strong>in</strong>g with them<br />

respect<strong>in</strong>g the measures <strong>to</strong> be adopted for its<br />

suppression. The k<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the earth were "plott<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the Lord and his ano<strong>in</strong>ted," and although<br />

will<strong>in</strong>gly submitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the cords with which the<br />

chief ruler <strong>of</strong> the Seven-hilled City had bound<br />

them, they were seek<strong>in</strong>g how they might break the<br />
