the French court saw. A new and grander style <strong>of</strong><br />

stratagem than any heret<strong>of</strong>ore employed was<br />

adopted. Pr<strong>of</strong>essions, promises, and dignities were<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>usely lavished upon the Huguenots, but, over<br />

and above, great schemes <strong>of</strong> national policy were<br />

projected, reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the future, embrac<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

aggrandisement <strong>of</strong> <strong>France</strong>, co<strong>in</strong>cid<strong>in</strong>g with the<br />

views <strong>of</strong> the Huguenot chiefs, and requir<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

cooperation <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> their successful execution.<br />

This gave an air <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>cerity <strong>to</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>of</strong><br />

the court which noth<strong>in</strong>g else could have done, for it<br />

was thought impossible that men who were<br />

cogitat<strong>in</strong>g plans so enlightened, were merely<br />

contriv<strong>in</strong>g a cunn<strong>in</strong>g scheme, and weav<strong>in</strong>g a web<br />

<strong>of</strong> guile. But Cather<strong>in</strong>e was aware that she was <strong>to</strong>o<br />

well known for anyth<strong>in</strong>g less astute <strong>to</strong> deceive the<br />

Huguenot leaders. The proposal <strong>of</strong> the court was<br />

that the young K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Navarre should marry<br />

Margaret de Valois, the sister <strong>of</strong> Charles IX, and<br />

that an armed <strong>in</strong>tervention should be made <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Low Countries <strong>in</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> the Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Orange<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Philip <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, and that Coligny should be<br />

placed at the head <strong>of</strong> the expedition. These were<br />
