MULINACCIO
By Shayna Wilson
On the banks
of West Lake,
atop the Hubin
Yintai shopping
centre, resides Hangzhou’s
first stand-alone Western
restaurant, Mulinaccio.
Boasting an event hall, private
dining rooms, an extensive wine list
and a mouthwatering menu, Mulinaccio
has been a star in the crown of Hangzhou
since its founding in 2012. A pinnacle
of fine dining, Mulinaccio provides an
authentic experience where other Western
restaurants continue to miss the mark.
While 2015 saw Mulinaccio largely close
its doors to the public, the establishment
remained popular among loyal customers,
artists, celebrities, businesspeople and
other elites. Excitingly, Mulinaccio recently
decided to undergo a transformation,
aimed to entice and appeal to the wider
public and a more diverse range of
customers. Although Italian at heart,
Mulinaccio has embraced a European
fusion menu alongside a carefully
cultivated wine list. Furthermore,
Mulinaccio hosts events such as wine
tastings, cooking classes, and artist nights.
In the near future,
Mulinaccio will
introduce new
elements; brunch
and afternoon
tea will start from
summer and can be
enjoyed on the indoor
balcony overlooking
the shopping-centre, an airy
space currently sporting a pool table.
The newly-renovated entrance will host
wine tastings while the bar. Director Alex
Lang understands Western cuisine is best
enjoyed as a combination and separating
food from wine would be unnatural at best.
Lang explains that the idea behind
Mulinaccio was to offer something
Hangzhou lacked, but most importantly
to create a space in the city where people
can “live and not just survive” by having
a restaurant that is genuine, familiar and
welcoming. The moment you enter via
a private elevator, Mulinaccio does just
that. Ciccio, who learned the art of pizza
making in Italy from the age of 15, is
making hand-tossed Italian style pizza
before a traditional wood-fired oven; the
ambience oozes authenticity. From the
wine cellar to the stained-glass windows,
it’s resonated by the endless flow of Italian
expats and the staff who have worked
there from the restaurant’s beginnings.
Frankly, it was impossible to decide what to
eat, so we tried the beef carpaccio, scallops,
fillet steak, cod and pizza, all of which
were perfectly cooked, seasoned and then
devoured. Lang explains the vegetables are
bought fresh every day, and the meat and
seafood are internationally sourced. Ciccio
views cooking like a science, and prepares
pizza like a "Japanese chef prepares sushi",
explaining why it’s the best pizza I’ve had
in China. As Mulinaccio evolves, there’s no
doubt it will continue to ensure its rightful
place as one of the most distinguished
restaurants in Hangzhou. As Lang states,
“West Lake is a star, and we are beside a
star. We have quality food, quality wine -
come here to relax, enjoy and have fun”.
