The construction of Charoen Krung Road led
to the expansion of the communities along
the new road, mainly residential buildings of
Westerners who came to reside in the city.
The area bounded by Charoen Krung and Chao
Phraya River became a new thriving district, with
consulates such as Portuguese, English and
French, Western-style shops, churches, and
steamboat piers. These still leave traces in the
architecture of the area until today.
An important architectural landmark was
a cluster of Royal residences called Apinaoniwes.
Built in 1852, it was one of the first buildings in
Siam that was built in Western style. Sra Pathum
Palace was also built under the reign of King
Mongkut. The Palace was the first royal residence
of Siam to adopt the Western idea of summer
palace, and was built along the new modern road
which extended from Bamrung Mueang Road.
The city expanded eastward. And as a result,
modern developments concentrated along
the line of this road (later Rama I Road).
In this period, many dramatic physical
changes occurred in Bangkok that some
scholars called it the transition point between
the “old Siam” to the “new Siam”
Road building under the reign of King
Mongkut also brought about the construction of
shophouses. Under the reign of King Mongkut,
Chaophraya Sri Suriwongse (Chuang Bunnag)
travelled to Singapore, studied new technologies
in order to modernize Siam. Building shophouses
along the road was one of the urban planning
feature that Siam adopted from Singapore.
These roadside shophouses soon became
a major source of income for the Siamese
government as it greatly stimulated economic
growth. Roads became the important mechanism
in driving the economy and reforming Siam.
All the roads built under the reign of King
Mongkut laid the foundation for many more
roads to be built under the reign of King
Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Bangkok transformed
from a city with canal networks, into a city with
roads as the major transportation. One of the
main development strategies for Bangkok, from
that point, became transport infrastructure.

在 建 筑 方 面 , 拉 玛 四 世 在 佛 历 2395 年 下 旨 修 建 了 一 座 新 的 宫 殿 ,
命 名 为 帕 那 阿 批 瑙 瓦 尼 , 成 为 了 泰 国 第 一 座 采 用 西 式 风 格 建 筑 的 宫 殿 。
拉 玛 四 世 还 下 旨 修 建 了 萨 拉 巴 吞 王 宫 , 将 其 作 为 第 一 座 避 暑 的 王 宫 。 在
后 来 的 王 朝 中 出 现 更 多 王 宫 之 前 , 这 座 王 宫 第 一 座 修 建 在 新 式 道 路 上 的
宫 殿 , 从 石 龙 军 路 一 直 延 伸 出 去 , 是 向 东 边 开 放 土 地 、 扩 建 城 市 的 重 要
开 端 , 并 且 使 得 在 接 下 来 的 时 期 里 这 条 道 路 ( 拉 玛 一 路 ) 周 边 的 区 域 越

并 且 将 新 式 的 科 技 文 化 带 回 泰 国 建 设 自 己 的 家 乡 。 因 此 , 昭 披 耶 西 · 素
里 耶 旺 亲 王 的 这 次 出 行 , 带 回 了 新 加 坡 沿 路 修 建 楼 房 的 设 计 理 念 , 并 且
暹 罗 的 土 地 上 也 进 行 了 道 路 规 划 和 城 市 建 设 。
沿 路 楼 房 的 修 建 , 作 为 政 府 一 项 非 常 重 要 的 经 济 收 入 来 的 时 间 并 不
长 , 因 为 这 样 的 城 市 规 划 大 大 推 动 了 经 济 贸 易 的 发 展 , 使 得 货 币 的 流 通
