the Avenue holds a special status symbolically.
Ratchadamnoen Avenue and its branches
also brought about significant growth to
the north of Bangkok. The construction of
the Avenue meant the development of an
unplanned, abandoned area of Bangkok
since the establishment of the capital city in 1782.
A number of architectural heritage followed as
a result of the construction of the Avenue: from
government area, to palaces and mansions of
royal family members and high-ranking officials.
This major construction project also
brought about economic growth, especially as
a result of shophouses and trade center.
Though in its early days, the economic values in
the north of Bangkok around Dusit Palacae and
Ratchadamnoen was not as high as those
within the city walls and beyond the city walls to
the south. This was because Ratchadamnoen
cut through mainly agricultural land. Nowadays,
nevertheless, we can see that social and
economic growth of Bangkok occurred as
a result of these networks of roads that King
Chulalongkorn initiated – the avenue of new
civilizations of Bangkok and Siam.
PHRA PHUTTAYOTFA BRIDGE – CONNECTING
THE TWO BANKS OF BANGKOK
On the occasion of 150 years of Bangkok as
the capital city of Siam in 1932, King Prajadhipok
(Rama VII) initiated there would be a celebration
and a project to build a national memorial to
commemorate the event. The King consulted
with the Supreme Council of State of Siam and
ministers who agreed on building 2 memorials:
the statue of King Rama I, and a bridge linking
Phra Nakhon and Thonburi.
The statue of King Rama I was designed by
Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong and made by
Professor Silpa Bhirasri. The construction of
the bridge was managed by the Prince of
Kamphaengphet. King Prajadhipok named the
bridge “Phra Phuttayotfa Bridge” (Memorial
Bridge in English). The design of the bridge was
designed by Dorman Long, a British company.
The design is a shape of an arrow pointing
towards Thonburi, and was inspired by King
Prajadhipok’s royal emblem. The construction
completed on 6th April 1932 which was the 150 th
anniversary of the establishment of Bangkok as
the capital city.

要 的 是 出 现 了 整 排 楼 房 式 和 贸 易 区 。 尽 管 当 时 律 实 皇 宫 北 边 和 叻 差 丹 嫩
路 地 区 进 行 贸 易 的 商 品 价 值 较 低 , 繁 荣 度 也 比 不 上 拍 那 空 县 城 内 或 者 城
外 的 南 边 地 区 , 是 由 于 当 时 修 建 道 路 经 过 的 地 区 大 部 分 是 以 农 民 为 主 ,
但 是 到 现 在 为 止 的 发 展 状 况 来 看 , 通 过 修 建 交 通 干 道 确 实 能 够 为 这 片 区
域 的 居 民 生 活 和 经 济 发 展 带 来 巨 大 的 提 升 。 也 证 明 了 拉 玛 五 世 下 令 修 建
律 实 皇 宫 和 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 , 建 立 属 于 曼 谷 和 暹 罗 的 城 市 文 明 地 带 是 非 常 明
智 的 。
曼 谷 拉 玛 一 世 纪 念 大 桥 — 连 接 曼 谷 两 岸 地 区
佛 历 2475 年 , 在 曼 谷 建 城 快 满 一 百 五 十 年 之 际 , 拉 玛 七 世 认 为 应
当 举 行 庆 祝 活 动 和 建 造 一 座 具 有 重 要 纪 念 意 义 的 建 筑 , 同 时 也 是 展 现 国
家 文 明 的 象 征 。 拉 玛 七 世 通 过 与 暹 罗 最 高 委 员 会 商 议 后 , 部 长 也 非 常 赞
同 国 王 所 说 的 要 建 造 一 座 具 有 纪 念 意 义 的 建 筑 物 , 并 且 支 出 应 当 具 有 两
个 意 义 , 第 一 个 就 是 要 有 拉 玛 一 世 的 雕 像 , 第 二 个 就 是 在 湄 南 河 上 建 造
一 座 跨 河 大 桥 , 连 接 拍 那 空 和 吞 武 里 。
至 于 拉 玛 一 世 的 雕 像 , 拉 玛 七 世 下 旨 由 那 里 沙 拉 · 努 瓦 迪 翁 亲 王 画
好 图 像 、 设 计 , 然 后 由 皇 家 工 匠 进 行 雕 像 制 作 。 而 大 桥 的 建 造 拉 玛 七 世
下 旨 由 普 拉 查 特 叻 · 差 亚 卡 叻 亲 王 作 为 总 监 工 负 责 整 个 工 程 , 七 世 皇 亲
自 将 大 桥 命 名 为 “ 拉 玛 一 世 纪 念 大 桥 ”, 并 且 选 择 英 国 的 多 尔 曼 朗 公 司
作 为 施 工 公 司 。 并 且 将 大 桥 主 体 设 计 为 一 个 箭 头 , 指 向 吞 武 里 方 向 , 这
一 灵 感 是 拉 玛 七 世 从 国 王 印 章 上 的 团 上 得 来 的 。 修 建 完 工 的 日 期 是 佛 历
2475 年 , 刚 好 是 一 百 五 十 年 的 纪 念 日 , 并 且 在 曼 谷 举 行 了 隆 重 庆 贺 仪
式 。
