FROM THE OLD SIAM TO THE NEW SIAM:
WESTERN INFLUENCE
Under the reign of King Rama III, western
culture was not widely adopted. Only modern
technologies such as medical knowledge and
ship building were adopted. King Rama III was
wary and watchful with regards to adopting
western culture. If it appeared that certain culture
from the West might undermine the tradition or
Siamese culture if adopted, it would be resolutely
prohibited.
In the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV),
however, Siam significantly adopted greater
degree of Western culture, and also in various
dimensions. King Mongkut familiarized himself
with western culture when he was still a monk
during the reign of King Rama III.
Whether it was his personal preference;
or whether it was the fact that King Mongkut
realized that it would be best for Siam to adopt
western culture under the current political
circumstances; or whether it was a combination
of both possibilities, western culture became
significant in the development of Siam from then
onwards.
King Mongkut was interested in new
scientific discoveries and technologies. His
interests covered a wide range from linguistics,
astronomy, to geography and medicine. King
Mongkut was not the only one who developed
an interest in new knowledge from outside of
Siam; other members of the Royal family, too,
were opened to western knowledge and
expertise.
Having extensively opened up for new
western technologies, the governing class of
Siam recognized the growing power of the West
and the political situation that Siam would soon
be facing. Siam was no longer a country
governed by its own norm and tradition; but one
that would subject to influence from outside.
Western culture became the symbol of modern
developments and civilizations. In addition,
it became the main guidelines in the development
of Siam from then on.
Following the Western idea of urban
planning, King Mongkut initiated the construction
of roads such as Charoen Krung, Bamrung
Mueang, Fuang Nakhon; construction of the new
city canal- Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem; as
well as building new forts following precedents
from the West.

对 接 收 学 习 西 方 文 化 的 时 候 , 表 现 得 比 较 谨 慎 和 思 想 具 有 局 限 性 , 并 且
对 威 胁 或 者 破 坏 传 统 泰 国 文 化 的 西 方 文 化 时 , 采 取 非 常 严 苛 的 政 策 进 行
管 理 。
当 时 仍 然 是 储 君 的 拉 玛 四 世 已 经 受 到 了 很 多 西 方 新 进 学 术 文 化 的 影
响 , 所 以 在 其 登 基 执 政 以 后 , 与 西 方 世 界 有 了 更 多 的 接 触 和 交 流 , 并 且
开 始 向 西 方 学 习 各 个 方 面 的 文 化 和 知 识 。
无 论 是 什 么 样 的 原 因 , 使 得 比 之 前 的 王 朝 对 西 方 文 化 的 接 收 程 度 越
来 越 高 , 不 管 是 赞 扬 国 王 或 者 是 国 王 在 面 对 西 方 文 化 时 的 保 守 作 风 , 不
愿 意 学 习 西 方 文 化 , 还 是 两 者 皆 有 , 都 是 使 得 新 暹 罗 文 化 诞 生 的 重 要 原
因 和 影 响 因 素 。
一 直 以 来 , 拉 玛 四 世 对 西 方 的 科 学 和 技 术 方 面 都 非 常 的 感 兴 趣 并 且
始 终 保 持 着 关 注 , 对 很 多 学 科 的 学 术 研 究 都 悉 心 研 究 , 包 括 语 言 学 、 天
文 学 、 地 理 学 、 医 学 等 等 。 而 且 在 那 个 时 期 不 仅 仅 是 国 王 对 国 外 的 文 化
感 兴 趣 , 其 他 的 亲 王 和 领 导 层 在 向 国 外 学 习 知 识 文 化 这 方 面 也 不 输 给 拉
玛 四 世 。
对 西 方 文 化 进 行 长 时 间 和 深 入 地 学 习 之 后 , 最 明 显 和 深 刻 的 影 响 就
是 使 得 暹 罗 王 国 的 执 政 者 阶 级 出 现 了 新 的 政 治 权 利 。 认 识 到 了 西 方 国 家
的 强 大 , 而 且 清 楚 地 认 识 到 了 暹 罗 王 国 在 世 界 上 的 现 状 大 大 不 同 于 过 去
传 统 的 时 期 , 在 那 个 时 期 , 西 方 文 化 成 为 了 当 时 社 会 发 达 、 繁 荣 、 进 步
和 文 明 的 象 征 , 这 些 都 促 使 暹 罗 王 国 的 面 貌 开 始 全 方 位 地 向 西 方 文 化 靠
拢 , 西 方 文 化 也 从 这 个 时 期 起 , 成 为 了 当 时 社 会 推 崇 的 主 要 理 念 。
城 市 的 发 展 方 面 , 根 据 国 王 的 指 令 , 首 次 在 暹 罗 效 仿 西 方 国 家 进 行
道 路 规 划 建 设 , 当 时 重 要 的 道 路 主 要 有 石 龙 军 路 、 巴 隆 蒙 路 、 丰 那 坤 路 。
还 有 一 个 指 令 是 要 求 将 护 城 墙 环 状 地 向 周 围 扩 建 , 开 凿 了 新 的 河 道 — 帕
东 公 开 赛 河 道 。 并 且 在 新 城 墙 完 整 地 修 建 了 新 式 的 西 方 堡 垒 。
