Nonthaburi, Wat Ratchaorotsaram, Wat Nang,
Wat Nangnong in Khlong Dan, and Wat Prodket
Chettharam in Samut Prakan Province.
In addition to the extensive building of
temples as a result of flourishing trade, Siam in
the reign of King Rama III adopted foreign art
and culture. Chinese art, in particular, was
adopted and mixed with the pre-existing Thai
art and culture. This new artistic style, originated
in the reign of King Rama III, became commonly
known as ‘Phra Ratcha Niyom Art’ – literally
‘Royal favored Art’. The term is specific to the
style ‘Royal favored’ in the reign of King Rama III.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF THAI – CHINESE
The unique artistic style or ‘Phra Ratcha
Niyom’ in the reign of King Rama III was a result
of a mix of Thai tradition and the newly adopted
Chinese style.
King Rama III had an interest and was wellinformed
in Chinese art. Chinese artisans were
skilled in plaster work, as opposed to Thai
artisans who were competent in wood work. As
this was the time when a number of Chinese
immigrants settled in Bangkok, there was an
exchange of skill and expertise between Thai
and Chinese craftsmen. Wooden building
technique which had been prevalent were
replaced by brickwork and plaster; with stucco,
porcelain and tiles as decorations.
