wall was simply made of logs of timber. Although
the city of Thonburi Sri Mahasamutr spanned
two sides of the River, the western bank was more
densely populated.
As Thonburi Sri Mahasamutr grew more
important politically and economically, a more
modern fortress was built. The idea of building
a fortress had been around since the reign of
King Prasat Thong (1629-1656). However, the
construction was only started during the reign
of King Narai (1656 – 1688) when Ayutthaya
started diplomatic relations with the Royal court
of France.
The Kingdom of Ayutthaya employed
a French naval commander called Chevalier de
Forbin to oversee the construction of Bangkok,
under the administration of the Greek
Counsellor, Constantine Phaulkon.
The Thonburi forts were impressive in size,
and built following precedents in Europe.
The forts were located on either side of the Chao
Phraya River and at the junction where Bangkok
Yai Canal joined the River. A naval chain would
have been drawn across between the forts when
a ship arrived, until the King of Ayutthaya gave
an approval for the ship to sail pass.

After Ayutthaya was devastated by the
Burmese (the Konbaung Dynasty) in 1767, the
King of Thonburi (King Taksin) moved the
capital city of Siam from Ayutthaya to Thonburi
Sri Mahasamutr. The King’s palace was
constructed in Thonburi, the western bank of
Chao Phraya River; while Chaophraya Chakri
(later King Rama I of the Rattanakosin Dynasty)
oversaw the construction of canals and city walls
of Phra Nakhon, the eastern bank of Chao
Phraya. During the reign of King Taksin or the
King of Thonburi, Bangkok grew significantly as
the center of the new Royal Kingdom.
Spanning both sides of the Chao Phraya
River, Thonburi Kingdom was geographically
divided into two banks spanning the Chao
Phraya River – a character which the Kingdom
shared with many ancient cities such as
Phitsanulok, Vientiane in Laos, Nakhon Chai Si,
and Suphan Buri.
Ban Khamin Canal, on the western bank of
the River, served as the moat of the western bank
of the city; while Khu Mueang Doem Canal served
