the reign of King Rama I was still regarded as
spanning both banks of the River. There were
palaces of royal family members in Thonburi as
well as in Phra Nakhon. For this reason, it can be
said that the new capital city, Bangkok was
founded as the new capital city with an area
covering the previous capital city of Thonburi.
The mains strategy for building Bangkok in
the early Rattanakosin era was to “replicate
Ayutthaya Kingdom in Bangkok”. This can be
seen in how many city planning-related tradition
was followed, as well as how names of places in
Ayutthaya were adopted. For example, Wat Phra
Kaew was built as a temple within the walls of
the Grand Palace in Bangkok; Wat Phra Sri
Sanphet was located inside the walls of the
Grand Palace in Ayutthaya. Maha Nak Canal
near Wat Saket took on the name of its
predecessor in Ayutthaya. Other examples
include the construction of the Giant Swing and
Devasathan (Brahmin Temple); Thung Phra
Men or the royal cremation ground; and the
installation of Phra Sri Sakyamuni, a large
Buddha statue from Sukhothai in a central
Bangkok temple (in Wat Suthat), following an
example of Phra Mongkhon Bophit in Ayutthaya.
At the heart of the new Kingdom was
the “Grand Palace” which acted as the sacred
center and represented the power of the King.
In addition to this, Wat Phra Si Rattana
Satsadaram or Wat Phra Kaew was constructed
inside the Palace walls to house the Emerald
Buddha or Phra Phuttha Maha Manee Rattana
Patimakorn, which King Rama I had brought
back to Siam since the Thonburi Kingdom.
Throughout the reign of King Rama I,
he ordered the construction and renovation of
many temples such as Wat Phra Chetuphon
Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn
or Wat Pho, Wat Mahathat, Wat Suthat
Thepphawararam, Wat Saket, Wat Rakhang
Kositaram, Wat Ratchaburana.

罕 菩 孟 波 琵 寺 , 将 素 可 泰 府 的 释 迦 牟 尼 佛 像 迁 移 至 大 皇 宫 内 进 行 供 奉 (
苏 泰 寺 内 ), 等 等 。
新 首 都 重 要 的 心 脏 地 带 就 是 大 皇 宫 地 区 , 被 当 做 是 皇 室 权 力 和 神 圣
象 征 的 中 心 , 但 新 首 都 的 功 能 不 仅 仅 如 此 , 除 了 修 建 新 的 大 皇 宫 , 还 颁
布 指 令 在 皇 宫 内 建 造 修 道 院 , 皇 室 将 其 命 名 为 玉 佛 寺 , 为 了 用 来 供 奉 从
吞 武 里 王 朝 时 期 就 带 到 泰 国 的 翡 翠 佛 ( 祖 母 绿 玉 佛 )。
除 此 之 外 , 国 王 还 下 令 修 建 了 许 许 多 多 的 寺 庙 , 例 如 : 卧 佛 寺 、 玛
哈 泰 寺 、 苏 泰 寺 、 金 山 寺 、 瓦 拉 康 寺 、 拉 嘉 布 拉 那 寺 等 等 。

principles. The city plan was modelled after the
universe, with the Royal Palace and prominent
temples in the center. They were surrounded by
