For the centennial celebrations of Bangkok
as the capital city in 1882, King Chulalongkorn
used Sanam Luang as the site for the Royal
procession. A three-month long exhibition and
fair was held. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn,
Sanam Luang was only used for golf, kite
competition, and horse racing.
RATCHADAMNOEN AVENUE: THE CIVILIZED
SIAM
Among 110 streets built in the reign of King
Chulalongkorn, the most prominent, the most
picturesque, and the one with the greatest
importance symbolically in conveying the image
of civilized Siam, would be no other than
“Ratchadamnoen Avenue”
Ratchadamnoen Avenue consists of three
avenues: Ratchadamnoen Nok, Ratchadamnoen
Klang, Ratchadamnoen Nai. The avenue started
from Pruettibas road, through Ban lhor District,
to Hakkamlangdassakorn Fort, across Khlong
Phadung Krung Kasem, and joined with
Benjamas Road in Dusit Palace. Construction
started in August 1899 as a thoroughfare for
royal journeys to and from Dusit Palace.
The three sections are collectively called
“Ratchadamnoen Avenue”. The Avenue cut
through 3 prominent canals: Khu Mueang Doem,
Klong Rob Krung, and Khlong Phadung Krung
Kasem. King Chulalongkorn had the Department
of Public Works and Town & Country Planning
constructed new bridges in western style to
decorate and to join the three sections of the
Avenue together. The three bridges, which make
Ratchadamnoen the most visually stunning
avenue in Siam, are Phan Phiphop Lila, Phan Fa
Lilat, and Makkhawan Rangsan.
The significance of Ratchadamnoen was
not only the thoroughfare for Royal journeys
between the Grand Palace and Dusit Palace,
but the ‘backdrop of civilizations’ of Siam to
the world. Ratchadamnoen Avenue, along with
its contemporary, Dusit Palace, were both
developments to Siam which followed the
western examples.
Another aspect of Ratchadamnoen Avenue
is the fact that it ties the traditional society of
the old Siam, to the modern society following
western influences together. The Grand Palace
and Wat Phra Kaew- the heart of the “old Siam”,
and Dusit Palace and Wat Benchamabophit –
the heart of the “new Siam”, are linked together

在 拉 玛 五 世 执 政 期 间 修 建 的 一 百 一 十 条 道 路 中 , 最 重 要 、 最 漂 亮 、
对 城 市 面 貌 影 响 最 大 以 及 最 具 有 文 明 象 征 的 道 路 就 是 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 。
叻 差 丹 嫩 路 包 括 三 条 马 路 , 分 别 是 叻 差 丹 嫩 外 道 , 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 中 路 和 叻
差 丹 嫩 路 内 道 , 从 普 提 巴 路 开 始 , 途 径 邦 罗 区 , 直 走 就 是 哈 甘 瑯 达 撒 空
堡 垒 , 穿 过 帕 都 宮 咖 瑟 河 道 后 到 堋 砸 玛 路 为 止 , 那 里 就 是 律 实 皇 宫 。 这
条 路 修 建 于 佛 历 2442 年 , 修 建 的 目 的 是 为 了 拉 玛 五 世 返 回 律 实 皇 宫 时 更
加 方 便 。
这 三 条 路 可 以 被 合 称 为 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 , 整 条 道 路 经 过 了 三 条 重 要 的 河
道 , 分 别 是 原 来 的 护 城 河 、 绕 城 河 和 帕 都 宮 咖 瑟 河 。 拉 玛 五 世 下 旨 让 公
共 工 程 部 修 建 新 式 的 具 有 西 式 风 格 的 桥 梁 , 使 得 三 条 道 路 能 够 连 接 在 一
起 同 时 也 显 得 更 加 美 观 , 三 座 桥 梁 分 别 是 庞 丕 珀 利 拉 桥 、 庞 珐 利 拉 桥 和
玛 卡 宛 拉 散 桥 。 从 而 使 得 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 成 为 了 暹 罗 最 漂 亮 和 最 宏 伟 的 道 路 。
叻 差 丹 嫩 路 的 意 义 不 仅 仅 是 作 为 拉 玛 五 世 回 宫 时 的 通 道 , 这 条 道 路
扮 演 的 另 一 个 重 要 的 角 色 是 作 为 暹 罗 城 市 文 明 的 象 征 , 展 示 在 世 人 眼 前 。
而 且 在 这 条 道 路 的 修 建 是 和 律 实 皇 宫 同 期 修 建 的 , 可 以 认 为 是 泰 国 文 化
和 西 方 文 化 的 融 合 , 当 然 所 以 也 可 以 看 作 是 学 习 西 方 建 筑 风 格 建 造 宫 殿
和 道 路 的 表 现 。
如 果 从 另 一 个 方 面 来 看 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 , 可 以 看 到 这 条 道 路 是 连 接 了 泰
国 传 统 文 化 和 新 文 化 的 桥 梁 , 因 为 这 条 道 路 的 一 端 是 泰 国 传 统 文 化 的 中
心 , 也 就 是 大 皇 宫 和 玉 佛 寺 。 连 接 的 另 一 端 就 是 泰 国 新 文 化 的 中 心 , 就
是 律 实 皇 宫 和 云 石 寺 。 因 此 从 那 时 起 , 叻 差 丹 嫩 路 比 起 泰 国 其 他 的 任 何
一 条 道 路 , 在 文 化 象 征 意 义 方 面 都 显 得 更 加 重 要 。
