The Greatest Legend Nobody Knows By: Yvonne Cloutier / Musical Moments Paul Robeson lived one of the great lives of the 20th century. He had many talents and accomplishments in sports, singing and acting – all while fighting racism. He will be especially remembered as Joe the stevedore, for his powerful bass voice singing Ol’ Man River, in Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein musical Show Boat. The song expressed his views - comparing the Mississippi River to rich people indifferent to hard-working “colored people” with the words: “Dere’s an ol’ man called de Mississippi, Dat’s de ol’ man dat I’d like to be; What does he care if de world’s got troubles; What does he care if de land ain’t free…” Paul Leroy Robeson, (pronounced Robe-son,) was a highly intelligent, charismatic, courteous, handsome gentleman. He won a scholarship to Rutgers University, graduated Phi Betta Kappa, and even became a lawyer. He excelled in sports and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Robeson lived from 1898-1976; the son of a runaway slave, preacher and a Quaker mom, who died in a fire when Paul was six. His father then raised Paul and his 4 siblings. Paul grew up singing spirituals in his father’s Presbyterian Church. He quit the law practice, when a white secretary refused to type his dictations. He married Eslanda Cardozo Goode in 1921. She became his personal assistant and persuaded him to work in music and dramatics. Robeson starred in Eugene O’Neill’s play All God’s Chillun Got Wings, electrifying critics and audiences. His acting career was born and eventually he performed in over a dozen movies. Because of his views on human rights, his politics led him to sing and act where race didn’t matter; namely Europe and Russia. In England, he was the first black Othello, but never did this role in America because blacks were not allowed to do a love scene with a white woman. Robeson believed and urged peaceful coexistence with other societies regardless of race, color or religion. He gave numerous speeches, wrote many articles and authored his biography, Here I Stand. Joseph Dorinson, history professor at Long Island University claimed Paul Robeson was “the greatest legend nobody knows.” Yvonne Cloutier, a former teacher/principal, with a music background, specializes in ragtime piano. By 10:30 the phones at Las Vegas’ Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) had begun ringing and volunteers were hustling to hospitals throughout the city. In a town whose reputation has been built on gambling, glamour and entertainment, tourists and other visitors can easily overlook the compassionate side of Clark County that 2.2 million call home. The TIP volunteers “provide assistance on the scene of tragedy,” explained TIP’s local CEO Jill Roberts. Many of TIP’s calls are from first responders…often the coroner’s office who recognize TIP’s resources are needed; “95% are death related,” said Roberts. Among the service TIP provided for Route 91 victims was guidance to victims and their families for transport home and offering emotional support to medical staffs that had never experienced the magnitude of such an event. With TIP’s 25 th anniversary approaching, a celebratory show, The Bridge, an Orchestral Benefit Concert, has been scheduled with all the “Las Vegas” that anybody could wish for.
