The 30/30/30 Rule By: Aaron Phillips / Healthy Voice When we last met, I shared with you the basis of my story. “Choices, Decisions, Consequences” sort of wraps everything neatly with a bow as to why we feel the way we do both physically and mentally. My mission is to share easy things anyone can do to achieve better health. One of the first things I was taught by the nutritionist for my gastric sleeve surgery, was something called “The 30/30/30 Rule.” My postsurgery regimen includes getting 90-100 grams of protein and at least 120 ounces of water a day in my body. Everyone knows the basic ways of obtaining protein: meat (but don’t overdo red meat), fish, chicken, nuts etc. But what happens when we bring these good proteins and nutrients into our body? Growing up, I was told that if you want to lose weight you should drink at least 8 ounces of water before a meal, as this will fill you up, so you don’t overeat. The problem with that is about 30-60 minutes later - you go to the bathroom and release the water you ingested and you’re hungry again. The 30/30/30 Rule (1) Stop drinking fluids 30 minutes before your meal. This allows the body to have as much space to take in all the good nutrients your body needs. (2) Your meal should take between 20-30 minutes to eat. Slow down, enjoy the food. Eat with the salad fork so less actually goes in and will slow you down. Plus: Do not drink any fluids while eating. This will “dilute” the nutrients your body needs. (3) Wait 30 minutes to drink again. It takes at least that long for those proper nutrients to be absorbed throughout your body.
