company’s story. We had examples of counterfeits and packaging from
China. I offered insight from a small company perspective.
When I was done they asked questions. I was prepared and easily
addressed all their concerns.
At the end of our meeting, White House personnel asked if my family
would consider sharing this story on television. We were also asked and
did submit a statement for the Congressional hearings.
I have no idea if what we did that day will make a difference. But for
me, it already has.
At 64, I found an inner confidence I didn’t know existed. More
importantly were the accolades and conversations with my kids after
the meeting.
The text from my attorney daughter says it all: “The reality of what
you did just hit me. You had a meeting at the White House and
crushed it! Very, very few people in the world can say that.”
Even if my involvement doesn’t change anything with China, my
kids were really proud of me. Hopefully this will be another example
for them to always try and make a difference - even if the odds are
against you.
Chicago Club Board Members
From the moment people came through the doors of the lobby, dressed
to the nines in their Hawaiian gear, a friendly, high-energy buzz was in
the air. It was filled with pictures of the Chicago Club’s past events.
When the doors to the Ballroom opened, everyone was transported into
a whimsical atmosphere as they gazed upon “Mighty Mount Chi-Waii”
standing tall on the stage; a sea of colorful tables decorated with huge
blow-up Palm Trees and Pink Flamingo drink holders - and a Tiki Bar/
Dessert Table.
President Bill Beckman welcomed everyone, and, as at every event, the
crowd sang the Chicago Club’s “Spirit Song.” Hilariously, a faux pig was
carried through the crowd, an excellent meal from Dickey’s was served
and then, beautiful Hawaiian dancers from “Hula Halau Na Manu O
Kaiona shared their culture, stories and Aloha.
As everyone in SCA knows, you don’t have to be from Chicago to be a
member. It is the Club’s mission to Welcome Everyone to their FUN and
ever-changing events!
The welcoming, fun and friendly atmosphere has made the Chicago
Club one of the most popular Clubs in SCA, reaching a membership of
480. (At the Chicago Club, you are NEVER a Stranger!)
