One for the Road By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet just learned that a career Army Major, I decorated for combat action in both Iraq and Afghanistan, lost his retirement pension because he has a job working in a (legal) medical marijuana warehouse. It defies logic, and only confirms that there is a “right way, a wrong way, and the Army way.” Even though the Feds still have the herb listed as a Schedule 1 substance, it just seems like a cheap shot from some very closed mindsets that abound in our leadership - mindsets geared to ruin the lives of a veteran and his family. Its nuts because alcohol destroys more lives than marijuana ever did (research indicates that marijuana may actually control many PTSD symptoms). Alcohol could never make that claim. Every week at our base camp in Vietnam, each soldier was issued a six-pack of beer, either Black Label or Budweiser, compliments of the U.S. Army. When we finished the free, we drank the local stuff…a lot. They also handed out two cartons of cigarettes each month. Alcohol consumption is an acceptable vice in our military, and binge-drinking is on the rise. The military culture has always been supportive of drinking, and excessive consumption has been regarded as normal. However, the impact of alcohol abuse continues to take its toll. Excessive drinking is estimated to cost today’s Defense Department $1.1 billion per year in lost productivity and medical treatment. It is also thought to result in the loss of roughly 320,000 workdays a year, and it leads to roughly 34,000 arrests per year. Recently, two Marine Corps commanding officers have been fired for driving under the influence. In a 2015 Rand Corporation survey, it was found that 30 percent of active troops reported being binge drinkers, and one in three service members met criteria that indicated they engaged in “hazardous drinking or possible alcohol use disorder.” The outcome: The U.S. military is America’s heaviest-drinking profession, with heavy consequences. I’m not on a soapbox debating marijuana vs alcohol (I did enough of that in the ‘60s), but I would like to see a bit more parity and a lot less ignorant bigotry from people whose decisions so heavily affect innocent people - especially veterans. Take it easy this Octoberfest. Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and through that experience was led to address the many transitional issues veterans struggle with.
