What made you come toMadagascar to surf?I came on a surf trip to explore theBarren Islands off the west coastof Maintirano a few years ago, andwas very inspired by the cultureand coastline of Madagascar. Iwanted to experience and learnmore, so I returned to make threeepisodes of the Brilliant Cornerssurf travel documentary that airson the worldsurfleague.comMadagascar is huge, fragmentedand unusual with puzzling plants, animals and a vibrant culture. Forsurfers there is so much potential -nearly 5000 kilometres of coastlinesporting everything from beachbreaks to point breaks to offshorereefs.Où êtes-vous allé et pourquoi ?J'étais en contact avec BlairRogers qui dirige Mada SurfTours (madagascar-surf-trip.com)à Anakao. Where did you go and why?I had been in touch with BlairRogers who runs Mada Surf Tours(madagascar-surf-trip.com) inAnakao, who was going to bea huge help making the film. Ibrought two fellow professionalsurfers (James Parry and MikeLay from the UK) and drove fromAntananarivo to Tulear. We stayedwith Blair in Anakao and exploredfurther south for surf. Most surfers head for the townof Tulear or the nearby villages ofAnakao and Ifaty, on the southwestcoast facing the MozambiqueChannel. Many of the best spots areover a kilometre offshore breakingover live coral. Further south thereare more quality waves at Itampoloand Lavanono, accessed via slowprogressdirt roads or boat. The small town of Fort Dauphinon the south-east coast is mucheasier to reach, and it offers afeast of spots including a longright point, Monseigneur Bay, as well as some goodbeach breaks. A hotel and several good lodges overlookthe waves, making this Madagascar’s premier surf zone. And a quick look at Google Earth will confirm that theeast coast is ripe with promising reef and point setups. There is an impressive concentration around Mahambo, halfway up the coast, and Soanierana, further north, where the rumble from right points is heard by nearbycommunities farming coffee, lychee and vanilla.I had to make a decision about which area to focus onbecause I did not have the budget to go to many areas. With the option to explore the offshore reef breaks andwork with Blair, I chose Anakao. But I would love to returnand explore further.| 88 | Magazine online www.primemedia.international
