COUNCILLOR’S CORNER:

Matt Luloff

The 174 Economic Corridor Study

Over the past year, my team

and I have been hard at work,

in collaboration with my East End

colleagues, setting the conditions

to maximise the economic

opportunities in Orléans, being

brought to our community by Stage

2 Light Rail. This time last year, I

commissioned the 174 Economic

Corridor Study, expanding on the

upcoming Secondary Plan refresh

for Place d’Orléans. I want to make

sure that our community and our

local businesses get the most out of

this multi-billion-dollar investment.

We must attract more employment

to the East End. As we have said for

years, we have not seen the kind of

employment growth in the East that

we have seen in the West. This has

led to congestion, frustration and

a lack of private investment in our

community. Great restaurants and

storefronts cannot survive on one

sitting a day and we owe it to our

tenacious entrepreneurs to foster

a daytime economy. The LRT, the

Corridor Study and the renewal

of the Community Improvement

Plan means that we have done the

necessary work to heat the iron, and

now is the time to strike.

The Community Improvement

Plan will encourage refreshing our

main street, replacing tired strip

malls with mixed-use buildings of

commercial and residential space,

encourage affordable rentals and

give economic incentives to build

employment spaces near the LRT

stations. New investments will

generate the funds to beautify St.

Joseph Blvd. and ensure that we

are encouraging safe transportation

infrastructure for all road users.

The 174 Economic Corridor Study

and Community Improvement

Plans need your input. The first

public engagement session is on

March 4th, 2020, at 6:30PM at the

Shenkman Arts Centre. You can visit

my website (matthewluloff.ca) or

Facebook page for more information

about providing your comments

and ideas. Your feedback is very

valuable to me, so please participate

if you can!

This month, my local music pick

is @cbcotttraffic’s own Doug

Hempstead’s band, Area Resident

and their new album Viscount.

He worked on the album with my

old friend Jordan Zadorozny, who

produced my band Hearts&Mines

and records under the name Blinker

the Star. It’s a good old-fashioned

rock album, and I think you’ll like it!
