3.3 Corrosi<strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong><br />

Avalanche protecti<strong>on</strong> measures are exposed to varying corrosive envir<strong>on</strong>ments. The<br />

corrosi<strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong> of the individual elements can be adapted to the prevailing situati<strong>on</strong> in<br />

order to achieve an adequate life expectancy of the structure. Standard galvanized products<br />

were selected for the planned life expectancy of the actual measures.<br />

4. COST AND CONTROL<br />

All together were nine light retenti<strong>on</strong> meshes varying in length from 5 to 18 metres, installed<br />

above the new tourist resort in Sirdal. Total length 84 metres. All foundati<strong>on</strong>s were in rock.<br />

The average cost per metre was 3000 and 3400 NOK, respectively for 2 m and 3 m high<br />

meshes (2005). This included the time the c<strong>on</strong>tractor needed to establish rati<strong>on</strong>al methods for<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> of posts as well as practical techniques for anchoring and installati<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

structures. Even so the cost was approximately <strong>on</strong>e fifth of a c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al supporting<br />

structure of comparable height.<br />

The light run-proof mesh and simple c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the foundati<strong>on</strong> and posts, makes it easy<br />

to maintain the structure when necessary. The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute will carry<br />

out routine c<strong>on</strong>trol of the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>s for some years to m<strong>on</strong>itor the performance and<br />

functi<strong>on</strong>ality of the new measure.<br />
