Traveling is my personal quest to recreate a new identity for myself in ashort time span and to contemplate the dualities of my identity that havecoursed through me and whispered queries into my ear: What if you wereraised in the East - where you would finally be part of the majority? Wouldyou be happier? Would you feel less inferior? Would you have climbed thesocietal ladder quicker?Despite being born and raised in Texas, I have never found myself fullyidentifying with this place – this country – nor having a desire to firmlyplant my roots here as many of my other Asian peers tended to naturally dowithout any questioning or curiosity of the what-if’s laying outside ourborders. This concrete jungle is at one pole a safe haven handed to me bythe toils of my immigrant parents; at the other, a region bere! of sensoryand visual stimulation that leaves me feeling hollow.I unexpectedly found solace from canceled travels this year and ‘escaped’this city by turning to an unlikely source of comfort – Chinese watercolorpaintings.
This triptych artwork, “,” is a product of fantastical imaginings ofjourneying through ethereal landscapes and was created throughillustrated renderings of famous ink works by Pu Ru (), Fan Kuan (),and Huang Junbi (), respectively, with touches of additions anddeviations snuck in there to illustrate no matter how far I stray into thedepths of nature or venture to the other side of the world, I will always carrytraces of my Texan identity with me – for better or worse."
