Ten Reasons to Visit Millbank
By Deborah Jantzi, Millbank
(with notes from Mark Moran on event changes)
I’ve lived in Millbank all my life, and
either worked at or have been involved
with mostly all of this list.
1. Zehr’s Country Market, Main
Street. You can’t miss it; a recent
makeover has changed the exterior
look to a handsome, red barn. There’s
really not a wrong time to visit, but
their fresh sausages, smoked chops,
bacon etc. arrive every Thursday from
Zehrs in Dashwood.
During the summer you’ll find fresh
Niagara fruits arriving twice a week.
Kawartha ice cream cones are a must!
But you know when you really should
visit? In February when the winter
blahs are setting in. Nothing will cheer
you up like free popcorn during Zehr’s
popcorn days!
2. I have to mention Anna Mae’s, of
course. After all, that’s what has put
Millbank on the map! What I really
recommend here is a slice of raspberry
custard pie. (To go, of course, because
you are going to be full after your
meal of broasted chicken!) Just before
Thanksgiving management hires
additional staff to come in and prep
pails full of pie pumpkins in an effort to
aid the bakery workers who bake 1000
pies for the occasion (did I mention
that number is strictly the pumpkin pies
baked?!). Currently, the building has
two entrances, one for dining in, and
the other for the book and gift shop.
Anna
Mae’s
3. The Orange Barn, is located on
Waterloo Street. A local couple, in
business for almost 40 years, have
supplied hundreds of people with a
taste of Florida and California sunshine
in the form of citrus, picked fresh and
trucked directly, one shipment per
month, December through March, each
season. The first shipment will arrive
on Dec. 4th and this is a first come first
serve drive through event this year. You
can find updates on their website at
www.orangebarn.ca
In addition to oranges and grapefruit,
the Erbs also sell orange TKO cleaners
and an assortment of fresh nuts
including one, two or thirty-pound
quantities of pecans. Payment is debit,
cash or cheque.
4. Millbank Family Furniture has
a brand new location beside Anna
Mae’s. You can wear off your lunch by
browsing! What better time to check
it out than in December? Guaranteed
you’ll find something to add to your
Christmas wish list! With a huge
showroom you’re allowed to dream big!
5. Christmas in the Village usually is
a Friday evening affair throughout the
town, with businesses staying open
late. It’s the first shipment of oranges,
with free snacks and other activities.
There are usually two short nativities
presented by local youngsters and
carollers on the streets, and also horse
drawn wagon rides. Publisher’s note:
This event has been cancelled for this
year, but look forward to it in the future.
6. Bauman’s Apiaries, Nicklin Street,
is “across the river” from the other
town businesses. You drive a winding
lane and suddenly you’re not in
town anymore, but on a family farm.
Once the bees are busy, the honey
is extracted twice a week on site. If
you’re after a large quantity of honey,
it’s more economical to bring your
own container. If you want a real treat,
try a jar of flavoured creamed honey.
Raspberry is my top pick! Honey is
available year round.
7. Although Zehr’s Country Market
carries Balderson Cheese, the closest
you’ll find to the original Millbank
brand is The Cheese Factory Outlet
store on Church Street—another fun
stop. Check out their variety of cheeses
and, also sold here, poultry products.
Our family enjoys the stuffed chicken
breasts; I’m recommending broccoli
and cheese.
Millbank Cheese Factory
8. On Main Street, almost across
from Zehrs, you’ll find Millbank Country
Hardware. If you can’t find the power
tool you’re after, you probably don’t
need it! Lots of brand names to choose
from at that. If you’re looking for deals
the time to come is in September for
their sale days.
9. Ladies, if the above interests the
men in your life more than you, you have
getaway options within five minutes, in
all directions, and they all involve fabrics
and/or quilts. To the south, in the next
“blink and you’ve missed it” village of
Poole, is Kathy’s Dry Goods. Newton is
home of E and E Cloth Creations (Edgar
and Emmaline Wagler just celebrated
their 30th anniversary in business!). As
Line 76 curves east changing it’s name
to William Hastings Line, you’ll turn left
onto Road 116 and find Quilts Galore
two farms down. Heading north from
Millbank on Road 121, take the first
side road east, first farm to the right,
and check out Conestoga Bird Feed.
Also on this farm you’ll find a small,
well-stocked dry goods store (and those
two adjectives are not exaggerated!).
10. Our parks. Pioneer Memorial Park
on Waterloo Street has new playground
equipment as well as a mown path
beside the muddy river. The Lyle Yost Ball
Diamond is at the east edge of town and
there’s also Morningdale Park, where on
one side of the river you’ll find the rest
area. You can follow the path down to
the creek and across the footbridge to
more shaded areas to explore. At the
top of the hill you’ll find the recently
restored Dunbar Family Log Cabin.
With a bit of luck, you’ll find someone
there working, and you’ll be able to
step inside. Also, running through our
town is the freshly resurfaced Guelph to
Goderich Trail (G2G).
10. There you have it. Ten reasons to
make Millbank a year round daytripping
destination.
The real way to explore? Ask a
local about more small, family-owned
businesses such as A-Z Gifts, Country
Dream Gifts, Albrecht’s Chainsaw
Service, Sunscape Greenhouse and
more, all within minutes of the village.
In the summer you’ll find roadside
produce stands, in the spring, it’ll
be maple syrup; eggs you can find
year round. Buy local, buy fresh!
There’s simply no end to daytripping
adventures.
Please note: all businesses are closed
on Sundays. Find more information at
