UPFRONT

SWIM INTO SUMMER

Bathers, swimmers, togs, a cossie,

trunks or even a dookie (what?!).

We’re here to help you decide what

kind of swimsuit you are!

1THE KINI

Harkening back to 1946 and named

for Bikini Atoll, whether it’s a bikini,

a trikini (don’t forget the matching mask),

a burkini (more is more), there’s even the

pubikini (designed to show off the pubic

hair) and the monokini for topless bathing,

it seems the options are endless. Either

way, anything ending in kini is usually a

good choice for summer.

2BOARD SHORT OR BORED SHORT?

If you prefer a hibiscus floral print

in a knee length short, then the

board short is for you. Originally designed

for surfing, these longer length shorts

seem to appeal to Americans as they like

to avoid the lycra chafe. Having said that,

we do love a Vilebrequin print swimming

trunk, budget-permitting.

3THE MANKINI

If you find yourself liking a couple

of strips of lycra stretched between

your buttocks, chances are you’re the

mankini. Popularised (if we dare say that)

by Borat, this item sets the wearer apart

(as well as the cheeks) and is really only

for the bold.

BUDGIE SMUGGLER

If you like a little more coverage

than the mankini but still like to

show off your bits, then the little Budgie

Smuggler is for you. Popular with northern

Europeans, these little fellas leave nothing

to the imagination.

5ONE PIECE MAILLOT

There comes a time when the bikini

is replaced by the one piece, and

you wonder why you never wore it before!

Hiding the problem stomach area, this

piece is a delightfully flattering garment

leaving you with a strange silhouette on

the torso. Despite that, we love it.

MY FAVOURITE DESTINATION

VANCOUVER ISLAND

DOMINIQUE SMIT

Co-Founder - Virtual Pursers LLP

Vancouver Island is one of the most tranquil

places, with rugged beaches and eclectic local

communities. It is located off Canada’s Pacific

Coast and is the capital of British Columbia. One

of my favourite attractions in the summer is the

Butchart Gardens which boasts 55 acres of garden

and has 50 full-time gardeners. Along the rocky

coastline, the water is wetsuit temperature all

year round but it is known for some of the best

surf in Canada. During the winter, you’re just a

short drive away from the gorgeous mountain

towns of Whistler and Blackcomb, famous for

their ski slopes. From April to October it’s high

whale watching season, where you are almost

100% guaranteed to see an Orca in its natural

habitat. With friendly people, breath-taking views

and no shortage of exciting activities year-round,

it’s hard not to fall in love with Vancouver Island.

KALYMNOS

Not only the climbing Mecca of Greece but,

also the original home of sponge divers. For

centuries, Kalymnos remained the centre of

the sponge diving industry in Greece, even

though sponge diving was also an important

source of revenue for several other Greek

islands of the Mediterranean.

STAR

GAZER

If you’re out in the

middle of the

ocean, then the

un-polluted skies

You can now have

a virtual star chart

in your pocket.

eyes of your iPhone or iPad to see

a high-tech window into the whole

top educational and augmented

reality astronomy app.

SKYSAFARI

version of

SkySafari 6 shows

stars, 222 of the best-known star

clusters, nebulae, and galaxies

in the sky; including all of the

Solar System’s major planets

and moons, and more than 200

asteroids, comets, and satellites.

point the device to

the sky and have

fun! You can see
