WHY BEYONCE’S LOVE OF YACHTS IS ACTUALLY A

GLANCE BACK TO SIMPLER TIMES GROWING

UP NEAR THE TEXAS COAST

WORDS: FRANK GRICE

When Beyonce and Jay-Z hit the

headlines in 2018 when spotted

out on one of the most prestigious

yachts in the celebrity world, an

assembled gathering of red top editors and magazine

gossip page correspondents seemed so intent

on reporting stats, figures and numbers that

they passed up the opportunity to celebrity the

real matter at hand. Namely, the fact that the

world’s most famous pop couple had ascended to

true nautical royalty, and with it, an appreciation

of the open seas.

For so long, the Marmite pair had been fulcrums of

the New York and LA celebrity elite, rarely swaying

from the comfort and security of a glamorous world

which, thanks to no small amount of hard work,

dedication and talent, was paying back big time.

Yet the press still obsessed over the big numbers

– the immaculate Lürssen Kismet yacht that the

opulent couple had chartered is the property of

businessman and sports tycoon Shahid Khan.

Some had the 312ft, seven-bedroomed, Reymond

Langton-designed floating mansion at $200m,

others moved it closer to $300m; while the cost

to charter it was speculated to be anything from

$1.2m to $1.8m per week.

What’s clear is that with the couple’s combined

earnings last year topping $150m, they and

their three children could relax on the palatial

yacht knowing that they were undertaking the

ultimate test run. And the reports from R‘n’B

star Beyonce suggested she was overflowing with

excitement over Kismet in much the same way as

was the Jay-Z-branded Ace of Spades champagne

pictured on board. “My knowledge begins and

ends at entertaining, looking after my guests and

ensuring everyone is having a good time,” said the

39-year-old in a way that was understated in one

instance, and perfectly respectful of an incredible

piece of nautical engineering in the other.

Perhaps the couple’s love of that particular yacht.

The former Destiny’s Child singer couldn’t have

picked a better named vessel – Kismet meaning

‘destiny’ in Khan’s native Urdu.
