The onsetand impact of the Covid 19 pandemic hasbrought a whole new set of definitions ofplace of work: a home office that may belocated in a living room, a bedroom, a kitchencounter, a study (for the fortunate) or evena couch. It may also be a really remoteoffice located in an un-commutable dailylocation, another city, another country or insome cases a different hemisphere and sofar, far away from the office headquarters’postal address.Our private spaces have been transformedinto multi-functional work stations; thephysical letter-box location has beenmodified to any space where an internetconnection is available, a virtual hot spotto communicate with the planet!What about those working on a yacht? In aSeaman’s Employment Agreement, Place OfWork will refer to the name of the yacht, nota physical location in view of the inherenttravelling nature of yachts. But what is ayacht? There are many definitions availablethat incorporate size, destination or usage.The Collins Dictionary for example definesa yacht as ‘a large boat with sails or amotor, used for racing or pleasure’. Howdoes a yacht differ from another vesselon the water? To answer those questions,let’s firstly take a look at the origin of theword and subsequently how the meaningof the word has transformed itself overthe years.The word yacht originates from the early16th century (1550 – 1560) from the Dutchword jaght, a short form for jaghtschip orhunting ship. These were fast, narrow andlight sailing vessels used by the Dutch Navy,wealthy ship owners and merchants to chasepirate ships, smugglers and buccaneers.With a large sail area but a shallow draft, aleeboard instead of a deep keel, the jaghtscould easily navigate the shallow waterssurrounding the Netherlands and interceptthe pirate vessels and criminals operatingfrom them.In the SEA, Place OfWork will refer to thename of the yacht, not aphysical locationHow did a hunting ship then become a luxuryitem for the rich and famous? Maritimehistory takes us back in time to the 17thcentury and specifically to the year 1660.It is at this moment when King Charles IIof England, after having spent 10 years inexile in the Netherlands, returned to thethrone and was offered a luxurious ‘hunter’– a yacht – by the City of Amsterdamthat the term changed meaning. The yachtwas part of the Dutch gifts for the newlyrestored King and was christened Mary.This 60ft hunter was constructed by theDutch East India Company (VOC) and wasalso gifted with a crew of 20.Once settled back in England, King Charles IIused the yacht for recreational voyages upand down the Thames River. His enthusiasmfor this rapid form of transportation soonmatured into the study of navigation andnaval architecture and also included theconstruction of several other yachts. KingCharles was swiftly joined in his passionby his brother James, the Duke of York.The Duke also had a yacht constructedand races were organised. In no time atall the English nobility all wanted a yachtof their own! Consequently, yachts becamethe symbol of vessels used to transport thewealthy and the important people for bothsport and pleasure and their identificationas a luxury item was born.No matter how they are described whethera superyacht, mega yacht or giga yacht,let’s aspire to keep them fun, privileged,safe and professional places to work onfor many years to come.ONBOARD | SUMMER 2021 | 161
