Stevens emphasized that farmers are good
stewards of the land and practice conservation
practices with crops and livestock. Her passion
for this message about agriculture continued
even when COVID-19 caused schools to change
the delivery of instruction. She continued to
provide Zoom lessons related to agriculture for
students in school districts of both Clinton and
Jackson counties. When schools reopened, she
was scheduled monthly in classrooms, building
on the science and social studies standards being
taught by using an ag perspective to make learning
come alive for students.
In her fourth year, she has seen her program
grow as teachers look towards Ag in the Classroom
to support science concepts. Stevens has
a budget and time for planning activities thanks
to the Clinton County Farm Bureau and Jackson
County Farm Bureau, to whom she provides a
monthly report on her activities in local schools.
Ag in the Classroom is just one part of the
STEM initiative in the state of Iowa. In March,
more than $550,000 was granted to teachers in
southeast Iowa, of which Clinton and Jackson
counties are included, to encourage and support
of the beneficiaries of
STEM grants for her
classroom. “I never
expected to have a
cow’s uterus on my
kitchen table, but
that is what hands-on
learning involves –
real-life experiences
to develop a deeper
understanding,”
explained Miller.
