As for Seeser Storage Systems, business
increased about 50 percent after the derecho,
as long-time customers and others called for
help.
“We tried to take care, if a customer
couldn’t do anything, we’d get up them up
and going first,” Seeser said. “Some were
just adding another bin. They can start harvest.
You had to kind of prioritize.”
Seeser added that new bins have been arriving
within a week of expected schedules,
though driers sold out for the year in January.
Farmers also had to decide, if replacing
a bin, whether or not to increase capacity,
especially considering increasing yields.
Seeser believes that long-term trends of
increasing yields will continue to drive the
need for increased grain storage.
“If you’ve got 1,000 acres, for every
10-bushel increase in yields you see per acre,
you need 10,000 more bushels of storage,”
he said. The math adds up quick.
