a big year
Eastern Iowa Farmer photo / Brooke Taylor
Rick Seamer still tends the land his grandfather Henry started farming in 1867. He and the
family are happy to have 2020 behind them and are looking forward to harvest.
in 1867.
Rick watched the derecho from the
garage. It wasn’t until a neighbor drove
by the family’s bins that he learned they’d
suffered more than downed corn: their
bins were in “bad shape.”
The family learned just how capricious
a so-called “straight-line” wind can be.
A truck auger behind the bins flipped,
but another auger in the direct line of the
winds lay untouched.
To assess the damages, Seamers called
Seeser Storage Systems. With cranes,
manlifts and expertise, Seeser replaced
a bin that the Seamers didn’t think was
salvageable, taking sheets from the destroyed
bin to repair the other bin. “They
did miracles,” Lane said.
Seeser Storage Systems brought two
cranes and two manlifts, carefully pushing
and pulling back a bin that had come
up about six inches.
“This is our 49th year in business, so
we’ve got some experience,” said Harlan
Seeser. “Experience kind of guides you.”
The Seamers’ other bin was beyond
repair.
“The roof of that far bin looked like a
balloon,” Lane said. “The wind just got
underneath it.”
Neighbors, friends and family helped
the Seamers tear down the destroyed bin.
To recapture some of the capacity lost
through the bin destroyed last year, they
rented a bin down the road.
Their new bin went up this summer,
complete with a wind ring at the top and
sidewall stiffeners—vertical rods around
