Experts at exports Bellevue-based family business ships logs — from walnut to cherry and everything in between — across the world for use in high-end furniture and other applications BY Nancy Mayfield eastern iowa farmer During the Great Depression, Iowa farmer Dayton Tracy cut hedge posts for fences, trying to make a living during hard times. A log buyer asked Dayton to “spot” black walnut trees in the southwest part of the state – look for good quality timber that could be harvested and used to make gunstock. Dayton agreed, having no idea that his decision would impact generations to come. “That’s what got our family into the business,” Craig Tracy said of his grandfather’s venture into the timber market. Bill Tracy, Craig’s father, also made a living buying and selling logs, with his wife, Betty, working in the office. In 1983 Bill founded Tracy Export. Three years later, the company was incorporated in Bellevue, and Craig joined his father in the venture. Today, the third-generation company exports high-quality veneer logs around the world for use primarily in furniture and flooring, as well as saw logs. In a state where livestock and grain are agriculture giants, the Tracy family has quietly built a business that’s grown to more than 30 employees, has three holding yards (East Dubuque, St. Louis and Michigan) and sells logs to customers in Italy, Japan, South Korea, Company: Tracy Export Inc. It was formed in 1986 by Bill and Craig Tracy and is headquartered in Bellevue. The fourth-generation family business employs about 30 people, half of them from Jackson County. It has log yards in East Dubuque, Illinois; White Pigeon, Michigan; and Cahokia, Illinois. Craig Tracy’s three children now run the company: Matt Tracy is the president, Allysen Tracy Bonifas is the vice president, and Mike Tracy is the secretary/treasurer. China, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan and Indonesia, among other markets.
