CONCLUSIONS<br />

In the confrontation with the loss <strong>of</strong> their child, parents encounter special experiences<br />

<strong>of</strong> a transcend<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>d, which help them stay connected to their child dur<strong>in</strong>g the end<strong>of</strong>-life<br />

stage (<strong>in</strong> the PICU) and after death. We consider these experiences manifestations<br />

<strong>of</strong> a ‘<strong>fragile</strong> <strong>spirituality</strong>’, which is a form <strong>of</strong> <strong>spirituality</strong> that is fragmentary, unbound,<br />

ambivalent, and referr<strong>in</strong>g to another dimension <strong>in</strong> this life. This <strong>spirituality</strong> is significant<br />

<strong>in</strong> the perspective it <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>in</strong> the existentially disrupt<strong>in</strong>g reality <strong>of</strong> loss. Thus, the spiritual<br />

dimension is part <strong>of</strong> end-<strong>of</strong>-life <strong>care</strong>, and all <strong>care</strong>givers should be aware <strong>of</strong> its relevance<br />

and consider <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g appropriate compassionate <strong>care</strong>.<br />
