Have you signed up for the federal “Do Not Call Registry”? You’re
not alone.
Per the Federal Trade Commission “Do Not Call Date Book –
2021” there are now 244,302,202 telephone numbers registered.
The FTC proudly proclaims that the Registry “provides an easy
and efficient way for consumers to tell companies they don’t want
to receive telemarketing sales calls.” You think it does any good?
According to the complaints received by this government agency
nearly 5 million telephone calls were still sent. And that figure was
only the reported calls.
You want to bet that the total unwanted calls were a lot (and we
mean a lot) more?
Anyway, the FTC found that the most common reported unwanted
calls were by
“imposters.” These
are ALWAYS the scams
stating the caller is
from “Social Security”
or “Medicare.”
The next most
reported calls were
the “Warranty &
Protection Plans.”
You know that one too
– like that message telling you that your car warranty is expiring –
even though you haven’t had that vehicle in years.
Still want to file that complaint? Go ahead, but know that you are
behind over 2 million other complaints – and that’s just in Nevada…
and for 2021.
Once again, we have a federal program that “sounds good” but is
really a waste of your time.
So our monthly Vegas Voice reminder - What should you do when
you get that telephone call? The answer is simple, easy and 100%
effective to avoid being scammed.
Hang up the phone, hang up the phone, and HANG UP
THE PHONE!
Still have concerns that maybe - just maybe that the Social Security
or Medicare telephone call is legit?
Again a very easy answer to ease your
mind.
Here We Go Again!
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
When I found myself single again, I realized
that I wanted to move forward and meet
new people. It was a hard decision to make after
losing my husband to Covid early on. Of all his health battles, the worst
thing happened and there I was alone again.
First you get through the initial shock and then you take inventory
of your life. I did that one day at a time, but time is not guaranteed.
Being a senior changes the expectation. I am much more flawed
than I was 20 years ago. Or even 10 years ago. And there are days when
I’m pretty drained.
Some are content to live alone and not engage or take chances. I’m
not one of those. I’m wired to be social and though I’m not overly
adventurous, my mother taught me always to move ahead and live life
with optimism.
Being optimistic can be downright hilarious. I chose a senior dating
site and told the truth.
I’m not so sure all the people who contacted me were truthful and I
think a few flunked out of grade school. Others were very specific with
what they wanted. Only a manufactured doll could qualify for them,
I’m sure.
I had three meetings and I ran laughing from #2. The 3 rd was too
young but really a nice person. I have no idea what anyone thought of
me and that’s OK.
I jumped off and then I got a really awesome message that perked
my interest. Intelligent, handsome and a killer smile. So I jumped back
on for a day and now we’ve been dating since last February.
But as we get older, the game changes and so do we. My 9:00 bedtime
is challenged on date night, so I am not a sparkling joy as the evening
wears on.
And I can no longer drive safely in the dark, so I need a designated
driver.
Toby Keith summed it up perfectly when he sang “I’m not as good as
I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”
