“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
Happy New Year!
Everyone keeps asking me for predicons for 2022 in the real estate market,
so I thought I would share some thoughts on the topic.
With homes sll selling faster than builders can build new homes, and with
today's seniors being less likely to downsize than previous generaons, 2021
has been a difficult one for home buyers forced into stressful bidding wars
because of the lack of available inventory of homes.
But is that changing? Will demand decrease, or supply chain challenges
fade and allow more homes to be built in 2022? Is this winter’s cooling of
the market indicave of re‐balancing & normalizaon, or just seasonality
that will give way to a Spring of bidding wars and increasing prices?
My guess is that we all beer prepare for another high‐demand, low
inventory year. I don't think it will be quite the intensity of 2021, but sll a
strong and appreciang market. There is no easy x for the housing
shortage and it seems demand for housing inventory will stay elevated for
the foreseeable future.
So, is it a good me to sell? Denitely. Your home will sell for a strong
price in today's market, and you will be more likely to be able to negoate
terms favorable to you due to the dynamics.
But is it a good me to buy? Also yes. The prices are connuing to
increase and the interest rates are low ‐ waing for the prices to be higher
and the interest rates to increase isn't going to benet you.
Whether selling or buying (or both), I am here to help you navigate the
marketplace to achieve your best result. My office is open 7 days a week
for your convenience ‐ and we are all looking forward to hearing from you.
About The Vegas Voice
There is nothing more gratifying than to be honored by your fellow
senior publishers. With that humble statement, we are very proud to
announce that The Vegas Voice received 10 national awards from the
North American Mature Publishers Association (NAMPA) in 2021.
Everything from General Excellence to Senior Issues to Editorials to
Graphics, the judges held (and it remains our unconditional commitment)
that “every issue demonstrates that The Vegas Voice is paying
attention to the needs and interests of its readers.”
Try, Try Again
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
“
Man plans and God laughs.”
The above quote is attributed to various
verses of the Bible as well as…(wait for it) Woody
Allen.
Although my Rana and I have made definite 2022 resolutions for
ourselves and The Vegas Voice, we are likewise extremely aware that
whatever we plan is more like a wish.
Last time we mapped out our future
adventures and dates, something
called COVID-19 hit the country
and…well, you know the rest.
I looked back what everyone at
our Vegas Voice family previously
planned for our “media empire.”
Unfortunately it all evaporated and
disappeared. Honestly, we were just
quite lucky to hang on.
So with that caveat and hoping
that the Almighty truly has a sense of
humor, we are making plans for 2022. My goal (besides dropping a
few ponds – okay more than a few) is to follow the resolutions on the
front page.
Beginning with our last point – Laugh Often. Thanks to our
Executive Director, Bill Blurb humor columnist (and my best buddy
& Bronx brother) Bill Caserta, we seem more than able to succeed
on this issue.
It takes a “special person” to eagerly volunteer to pose as our front
page New Year baby and no one would ever disagree that Bill is “special.”
And while his Barbara and my Ladylove remain dumbfounded at our
(at times juvenile) antics, so long as we don’t make fun of anyone
(except ourselves) I have no doubt that we will continue our idiocy and
laughter.
In the “Helping Others” category, my PILL (partner in love & life)
remains unconditionally devoted to assisting readers. She never tires
of her Don Quixote “tilting at windmills” quest to protect our fellow
seniors from the ugliness and evil that may face them.
Over the last few years, she has received at least 2-3 phone calls/
emails per week asking for assistance.
And she has plans (see page 10) on
how to help those who have (and will
be) exploited.
Last, but certainly not least, “Live
Well.” Assuming everyone remains
healthy and has a roof over our
heads (and we all saw in last month’s
destructive tornados how that can
disappear in an instant) you might as
well enjoy life to its fullest.
With more “yesterdays” than
“tomorrows” in our future, we hope
everyone gets to enjoy our Vegas
Voice shows (thank you entertainment editor Evan Davis) or go on
that “bucket list” too long delayed cruise/vacation (with thanks to our
travel/vacation editors Stu Cooper and Crystal Sarbacker respectively)
in 2022.
Yes, I know that all our plans are nothing more than assumptions
based on speculation. But we still want to try. Will we be successful?
Who knows, but as that other cliche (attributed to Robert the Bruce,
King of Scotland in 1314. I bet you didn’t know that. Thank you Goggle)
states, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.”
A very happy and healthy 2022 to you and yours!
Always a smile & a laugh with our Bill Blurb columnist
Vegas Voice columnists posing at our Holiday/Christmas party last month. Our family wishes you and your family a very happy,
prosperous and healthy New Year. Let’s hope 2022 is the best year ever!
King Richard
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
“
King Richard” is based on the real story of a
family whose love and unconditional belief
delivers two of the world’s greatest sports legends,
Venus and Serena Williams. “King Richard” is about Richard Williams
who was determined to place his tennis star daughters into history.
Hindsight makes this story worth telling.
Before they were born he wrote a 78 page manifesto that in retrospect
almost all of it has come true. He steered his daughters to dominate
the sport of tennis, achieving five Wimbledon titles and a $12 million
contract for Venus.
From Compton’s
neglected tennis courts,
(rain or shine) their
father’s unyielding
commitment and
mother’s (Aunjanue
Ellis) balanced
perspective defied the
insurmountable odds
laid before them. The
movie depicts countless
prejudices working
against the family.
Their mother was
the daughters’ secret
weapon and support.
She often needed to
remind Richard that
the Williams family
project was a group
effort.
Will Smith is Richard. He walks slightly stoop shouldered, grizzled,
nearly unrecognizable making his charisma into a stubborn yet
supportive focus.
Richard is a one-of-a-kind-guy, hard to reproduce, flawed, and far
from humble. Coaches and promoters didn’t question the fact the girls
were from Compton, but the fact they had been trained by a hands-on
dad inserting himself into the process.
Most sports movies are about exceptional talent, “King Richard” is
about exceptional belief. The conviction of their father provided the
girls both pressure and protection.
Venus played by Saniyya Sidney, and Serena played by Demi
Singleton were both strong roles and the girls dramatized their athletic
dimensions spanning three years brilliantly. In Compton the Williams
daughters were referred to as the “ghetto Cinderellas.”
Don’t miss this straight from the heart film. I loved it and rated it 5
out of 5. You’ll be happy you made the effort to view it.
Folk Legacy Trio Kicks Off 2022
By: Evan Davis / Entertainment Editor
George Grove, Kingston Trio 41 years.
Rick Dougherty, Limeliters/Kingston
Trio 25 years. Jerry Siggins, lead singer of the
legendary Diamonds.
What do they have in common? FOLK LEGACY TRIO
An American folk and pop music group that has helped relaunch
folk music of the late ‘50s to late ‘60s. They have been selling out across
the country, as well as Las Vegas.
The Vegas Voice is thrilled to bring them back for an encore
performance at Sun City MacDonald Ranch. And we’ve brought them
to the west side of town at the Summerlin Library Performing Arts
Center.
The Saturday January 22 nd performance at MacDonald Ranch is
already SOLD OUT, but there are tickets still available for the show on
Friday January 21 st at the Summerlin Library. See next page.
Now I don’t believe in stealing, but at $25 a ticket, it’s highway
robbery. Please do not miss this opportunity to hear some wonderful
folk music and some originals. Along with the great music comes
stories of what really went on at the festivals and shows back in the day.
And don’t forget about our February variety show on Valentine’s Day
at the Starbright Theatre. The Vegas Voice “Afternoon Affair” is back
with a star-studded lineup.
The 2:30 show (See page 17) will introduce you to fantastic talents
such as Ruby Lewis, an American actress and singer. She is also
known for such television shows as Desperate Housewives, Girl Meets
World, and Rules of Engagement.
Kevan Patriquin has
performed in Broadway
productions, national tours,
and regional theater as well as
television and film. Find yourself
laughing as Tony Arias (see
our Nightlife editor/ buddy
Sam’s article page 24 for more
information) recaps some of
With Llynda More
Broadway’s best-known classic
show stories as ONLY HE CAN.
Also scheduled to perform will be Ronnie Rose, Llynda More,
Shiela Wright & Mark Gendel. All will be accompanied by the
Vegas Voice Band under the direction of Bill Fayne.
Trust me, these two shows are definitely ones I wouldn’t miss.
You can read Evan’s entertainment blog and sign up to receive
his free email weekly Calendar of Events at www.EvanDavisJazz.
The Show Did Go On!
We had to cancel our December concert “Believe In The Magic
Of The Holidays.” On the day before the show, the pianist (who
was fully vaccinated no less) tested positive for Covid.
Under the motto, “The Show Must Go On” The Vegas Voice was
very fortunate to have Mark OToole step up and “save the day.” His
one-man show
“Classic Crooner
Christmas” was
fantastic, and the
standing ovations
were richly
deserved.
As one audience
member remarked:
“I will think about
Mark OToole doing
this for a long time.
I know stories about
people in show business doing wonderful things for each other, but this
is beyond the pale as they say.
“Please forward our compliments to Mark - our group of 6 was just
floored that Mark took on this task. What a guy!”
Here to Help
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
wish everyone a WONDERFUL New Year
I and hope that we see the end of the COVID
nightmare in the coming months.
I have received several phone calls asking what should be done when
a friend or neighbor suddenly seems to have vanished from their home.
The idea that many of us try to keep a concerned eye for our neighbors
as we age is terrific.
Previously my neighbor Hardy (whose backyard can be seen from
mine) has always been a favorite spot for my dog to watch each
morning. Hardy and I agreed, years ago, if one of us didn’t see, or hear
our dogs “talking” to each other daily we would call and make sure we
were both OK.
My Dan and I wish all of you a very happy & healthy 2022
Sadly, he passed away. Publisher Dan now has the job of looking out
for me and I do the same for him.
I mention this since a reader’s telephone call last month was especially
concerning. The lady couldn’t recall the name of her neighbor. However
she noticed some men taking furniture from the home, including
mattresses that they were casually dumping in a truck.
Her main concern was a comment made by the men taking the
furniture. They stated that the owner of the home was now in a “group
home” - a scary place to be.
I said I would run a title search as a first step so that she could have
the name of the owner and then she could request a “wellness check”
by the police. It took less than 15 minutes to find the lady’s name. No
living relatives were listed, but there was enough information to ask the
police to check it out.
My caller sounded very hesitant when I suggested she contact the
police, so Dan and I came up with a solution. I have asked Henderson
Councilwoman Michelle Romero to find a contact person with the
police department that I can reach out to with any concerns about the
safety of one of our neighbors.
I am in the process of doing so in Summerlin/Las Vegas and North
Las Vegas as well.
Should you have this type of concern, and you would like my
assistance, please reach out to me at Rana@thevegasvoice.net. I am
more than happy to assist in any way that I can.
Recognize Him?
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
hope you had a happy and safe Holiday. Here’s
I hoping 2022 will be a better year for all of us
and we can get back to
some kind of normalcy .
Do you recognize the handsome man in
the photo with me? Well, if you recall an old
TV show called Daniel Boone way back
in 1964 and until 1970, the man next to
me is the one who played Fess Parker’s son
“Israel.”
He’s Darby Hinton.
In the 4th season, it was said there were
30 million viewers of that show, which way
back then, was unheard of!
Because I’m “just a bit” older than
Darby, we never ran in the same circles.
However in later years, we seem to be
running into each other all the time at
various autograph shows.
Let me tell you that not only is he one of the nicest, and most fun
celebrities I know, he also has a tremendous fan base and following! It’s
safe to say that his female fans are right up there with Elvis!
Darby did his first “acting” role at the age of 6 months on an episode
of the old television show Playhouse 90. He did many other shows as
both a child and adult, including Wagon Train and Mr. Ed.
Darby also had a role in the Disney film, Son of Flubber and was a
regular on the soap opera Days of our Lives.
He and Fess Parker remained friends for
45 years up until the death of the wonderful
Mr. Parker.
We are scheduled to do a documentary
in March regarding the way animals were
treated in the early films until thankfully
the Humane society stepped in. You’ll now
notice in films where there are animals,
it will say, “No animals were harmed
during the filming.”
I have been asked to narrate it which I’m
truly looking forward to. I feel blessed to
now add Darby to my list of dear friends.
Until next time remember ... In a world
where we can be anything...Be kind.
Magic Mike Live
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
MAGIC MIKE LIVE is a delightful, fun,
sexy, entertaining show at the Sahara.
Apparently, the show is based on a Channing
Tatum movie. I don’t know who he is and never
saw the movie. Did you? Good news - It doesn’t matter.
What matters is that there are a whole bunch of hot talented male
dancers everywhere in the room. They may be on the stage, climbing
the ladders, or walking right by your seat on one of the multi levels of
the theater.
They are spirited. They gyrate, they climb, they dance, they participate
in wonderfully choreographed numbers. They entertain.
Yes, there’s a plot. But it is totally secondary to the action. Have I used
the word sexy? They are that for sure.
New Year - New You
By: Liz Breier / This & That
Having a facial is one of the most relaxing
and rewarding experiences for a senior –
male or female. Personally, I recommend having
a facial on a regular basis, but even if you only
reward yourself with one to start the New Year, it is so worth it, and you
might get addicted.
A good aesthetician not only applies the proper creams and lotions
to make your skin more youthful and healthier but will massage your
scalp, shoulders and neck. It is actually easy to fall asleep during the
experience.
A platform comes down from the ceiling with a drummer on it. The
dancers line the steps. The action is non-stop. The choreography is
creative. Did I mention that the guys are sexy?
This is a quality production, from start to finish. Yes, it qualifies
as a male review. But it goes so far beyond that with its outstanding
acrobatics, instrumental interludes, a bit of singing, and verbiage from
the female MC.
It is theater in the round and above. There is not a bad set in the
house as the guys come to where you are so you can get a closer look
at their dancing gyrations. It is sexy and sensual but in an upscale way.
Women are brought up on stage. Some are patrons, others are
“plants.” It may take a minute or two to figure out which they are.
That’s part of the fun.
There is one routine that takes sensual to a new level. You’ll see what
I mean when you visit the Sahara to enjoy Magic Mike Live.
One last note. Bring the guys to this top notch show. My husband
Burt enjoyed it and because we have seen so many shows in the last 17
years, he isn’t easy to please.
Dianne Davis is delighted to once again share her opinions of
local performers and shows. She is the lead reporter for SCA-TV
The array of possible “treatments” provides an option for everyone,
from a basic facial to those that infuse collagen and wrinkle reducing
potions, or provide for a gentle exfoliation.
Men often associate this enjoyable spa treatment as something only
for the ladies, but the men I know that have taken the time to indulge
themselves have been impressed with the results. After all, men’s skin
ages too.
Besides, who doesn’t enjoy an hour or two of peace and quiet and
being pampered? I figure if we have lived long enough to be considered
a senior, we deserve some amount of attention to ourselves after a
lifetime of attending to the needs of spouses, children, parents, careers.
This is our time! Start 2022 with a great facial and if you are feeling
really adventurous, add in a massage too.
If you check out some of the local hotels, you will find they offer
locals discounts and you can even make a day of it with a massage,
time in the jacuzzi and end it with a facial. In between you can lounge
in the spa’s lush robe and enjoy a snack or lunch. The entire experience
is a staycation, and you will leave feeling relaxed, reinvigorated and
rejuvenated.
For those that take the time for a manicure or pedicure, consider this
- isn’t your face deserving of some attention too? For me, the monthly
facial is something I feel I cannot do without and if you haven’t tried
it, once you do, you too may want to make it a part of your regular
hygiene routine.
Make Your Dream a Plan
By: Liz Palmer / NSG
What’s that saying…”New Year, New You?”
Lots of us have very similar resolutions:
Lose weight, become more active, maybe make
new friends or get involved in our communities.
The Nevada Senior Games is an organization that can help with
these goals! How?
Our annual members meeting is coming up in January. We will elect
new Board members and officers, discuss our results from last year, and
present plans for this upcoming season in September and October of
2022.
Would you like a few “sneak peaks?” We have several candidates for
new Board members and will be selecting a new Games Director from
previous applicants.
We will discuss adding a new sport to our roster of 2021 competitions
– wonder what it is? We’ll also talk about upcoming administrative
changes that will help with greater communication and information
exchange among our sports coordinator staff.
How does this affect you? It means that we’re planning for an
even better 2022 season this Fall to be enjoyed by seniors like you!
We’re already selecting our venues and working on the schedule of
competitions.
This is a great time for you to decide
which of the competitions you’ll enter.
Will it be our golf tournament or
our pickleball competition? Maybe
swimming or cycling is your sport.
Whatever sports gets you going,
chances are we offer it. We have over
20 individual and team sports for athletes ages 50 and better. And
by setting a concrete goal of participation, you’ve given your fitnessrelated
resolutions a boost.
Just thinking about it and wishing for it makes something a dream,
but committing to it and following measurable steps and a path of
progress turns a dream into a PLAN.
So don’t just dream about losing some weight or getting into better
shape; make your dream a plan. Use our competitions as your end
goal toward achieving your 2022 resolutions.
Check out our website at www.nevadaseniorgames.com for past
games and results, and keep checking for updates regarding our 2022
competitions.
There are many reasons for downsizing and
many ways to do it. You
may choose to downsize and
move or downsize and stay put.
No matter which you choose, you’re going to miss
your home and all the memories it holds. Bottom
line: You can’t keep it all and decisions must be made!
Some of the WHYs for downsizing are:
1. Too much unused space
2. Desire to save money
3. Too much upkeep or costs
4. Too much stuff for your current lifestyle
Downsizing must be well-planned. Lists should include:
1. Pros & Cons: Why you should downsize and stay or why you should
downsize and move?
2.What you need to keep: Furniture, appliances and other required
things.
3.What you’re going to keep: Items you’re certain you want to keep
for whatever reasons.
4. What you’d like to keep - Items you have to decide whether or not
still fit into your lifestyle.
Some suggestions and tips for ways to distribute, contribute or
dispense of items:
Host a family giveaway party and give your family the things
16
More Than Just Packing Boxes
January 2022
they’ve been begging you for over the years. Give it to them now so you
can see them enjoy it.
It’s also a great opportunity to discuss your downsizing plans and/
or move. You can also share other important family
information while everyone’s gathered.
Have a garage sale. It’s the perfect way to
downsize and make money at the same time. It’s also
a great way to catch up with your neighbors and let
them know you’re moving.
Donate. It’s a great option for helping community
organizations. Your donated items can be used as a tax deduction.
Consult your lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor
about what paperwork or records you should keep. Make sure to secure
all those items so they don’t get misplaced in your move.
Rent a storage room for your extra items, but do you really need
one? Remember, you’re downsizing, not adding new expenses and
obligations.
No matter which decisions you make downsizing is a great way to
begin the next chapter of your positive aging adventure! This one’s for
you, Richard!
By: Yvonne Cloutier / Musical Moments
In general, a good definition of ragtime music
would be the accenting of the off-beat in
music rhythm. This off-beat rhythm is usually in
the treble (right hand) notes, set to a steady oompah or boom chick,
boom chick of the bass notes with the left hand on the piano.
This rhythm is called syncopation. Ragtime is full of syncopation!
Classic ragtime was pioneered after the Civil War, mainly by Scott Joplin.
He was a poor black man and from the Missouri School of Ragtime
Composers - specifically, St. Louis and middle America. This region was
the cradle for the blossoming of ragtime music.
Joplin and other young ragtime composers realized there needed
to be a defining structure. There was little consensus on how to print
the syncopated melodies of ragtime, making confusing variety in the
formatting of sheet music.
For instance, should it be 4/4 time or 2/4 time? It often followed
conventions of earlier musical forms such as the march.
So, as the 20th century dawned, most composers, arrangers, and
publishers began to settle on a common structural way to notate it.
Since Joplin was the best-selling ragtime composer in that era, it was
his structural conventions that eventually predominated.
However, by no means was Joplin’s the only form. There actually
were two other men recognized for their haunting, harmonious
compositions within this structure guideline.
Besides Scott Joplin there was James Scott and a German,
Not For Me
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
We were talking about “bucket lists” the
other day, probably
because we were deciding how
to celebrate the New Year. A friend had taken a ride
in a two-seater plane and loved it - except for the 360
degree roll that made her airsick.
She asked if any of us would try it. Me? I’m trying to
celebrate life, not end it, so that was a solid “No.”
Does it sound as though I’m not adventuresome?
In fact, I’ll try most things, just not small planes,
climbing or jumping.
As a kid I climbed a tree because it looked so inviting.
Halfway up I discovered a snake wrapped around a
limb. The decision to jump took no time at all.
I looked at the snake, looked at the ground and let
go. Good choice? Who’s to know? I do know my arm was in a sling.
I was spending the summer with my mom’s friend in another state,
so mom didn’t get the details until I went home. Lucky for me!
What I remember most is the pain and boredom. Since my mother’s
friend had a busy life, I spent a lot of time with her “housekeeper,” her
Uncle Mack, a cranky ex-sailor who ran the household.
January 2022
Joseph Lamb. They
are often referred to as
the Bach, Beethoven &
Brahms of Ragtime.
A classic rag is set
in 2/4 time, starting
with a 4 measure
introduction with 16
measures of an “A”
theme written in the
named key signature,
then repeated. A “B”
theme enters and is
repeated, followed by a
repeat of the A theme in
the name signature.
Then there is a third
(C) theme repeated, a
fourth theme (D) repeated making the rag - INTRO, AA, BB, A, CC, DD.
Although a generalization, this is accepted as the classic form.
Yvonne Cloutier, a former teacher/principal, with a music
background, specializes in ragtime piano. She is the author of the
book, Scott Joplin, King of Ragtime. You can contact her at www.
mytimeisragtime.com.
He took pity on a bored kid, and we did a lot of cooking together.
Mack had a very colorful vocabulary, and I learned a lot of “new words”
that summer.
In Mack’s kitchen I first learned to experiment with
food. And although I couldn’t bake because of the
strength and dexterity needed, cooking was easy and
fun.
This recipe is his and it’s really simple. When I
prepare it, I think of Mack, a gruff man with a kind
heart.
Pork Chops in Tomato Sauce
Season 2-4 pork chops. Sauté 6 oz. sliced
mushrooms. Set aside. Brown chops in 2 tbs. oil in
oven-proof skillet. Add mushrooms, 2 sliced onions
and 1 sliced red pepper.
Dissolve beef bouillon cube in ¼ cup hot water, mix
with can of tomato sauce. Add one tsp. each garlic and
onion powders and dried basil. Pour over chops. Cover.
Bake in 375 degrees oven to internal temperature of 145 degrees 35-
45 minutes. Rest 5 minutes.
Have you signed up for the federal “Do Not Call Registry”? You’re
not alone.
Per the Federal Trade Commission “Do Not Call Date Book –
2021” there are now 244,302,202 telephone numbers registered.
The FTC proudly proclaims that the Registry “provides an easy
and efficient way for consumers to tell companies they don’t want
to receive telemarketing sales calls.” You think it does any good?
According to the complaints received by this government agency
nearly 5 million telephone calls were still sent. And that figure was
only the reported calls.
You want to bet that the total unwanted calls were a lot (and we
mean a lot) more?
Anyway, the FTC found that the most common reported unwanted
calls were by
“imposters.” These
are ALWAYS the scams
stating the caller is
from “Social Security”
or “Medicare.”
The next most
reported calls were
the “Warranty &
Protection Plans.”
You know that one too
– like that message telling you that your car warranty is expiring –
even though you haven’t had that vehicle in years.
Still want to file that complaint? Go ahead, but know that you are
behind over 2 million other complaints – and that’s just in Nevada…
and for 2021.
Once again, we have a federal program that “sounds good” but is
really a waste of your time.
So our monthly Vegas Voice reminder - What should you do when
you get that telephone call? The answer is simple, easy and 100%
effective to avoid being scammed.
Hang up the phone, hang up the phone, and HANG UP
THE PHONE!
Still have concerns that maybe - just maybe that the Social Security
or Medicare telephone call is legit?
Again a very easy answer to ease your
mind.
Call or email Yours Truly or our ACE
(Any Content Editor) Rana Goodman.
We promise to help and get to the
bottom of it.
Don’t Waste Your Time
January 2022
Here We Go Again!
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
When I found myself single again, I realized
that I wanted to move forward and meet
new people. It was a hard decision to make after
losing my husband to Covid early on. Of all his health battles, the worst
thing happened and there I was alone again.
First you get through the initial shock and then you take inventory
of your life. I did that one day at a time, but time is not guaranteed.
Being a senior changes the expectation. I am much more flawed
than I was 20 years ago. Or even 10 years ago. And there are days when
I’m pretty drained.
Some are content to live alone and not engage or take chances. I’m
not one of those. I’m wired to be social and though I’m not overly
adventurous, my mother taught me always to move ahead and live life
with optimism.
Being optimistic can be downright hilarious. I chose a senior dating
site and told the truth.
I’m not so sure all the people who contacted me were truthful and I
think a few flunked out of grade school. Others were very specific with
what they wanted. Only a manufactured doll could qualify for them,
I’m sure.
I had three meetings and I ran laughing from #2. The 3 rd was too
young but really a nice person. I have no idea what anyone thought of
me and that’s OK.
I jumped off and then I got a really awesome message that perked
my interest. Intelligent, handsome and a killer smile. So I jumped back
on for a day and now we’ve been dating since last February.
But as we get older, the game changes and so do we. My 9:00 bedtime
is challenged on date night, so I am not a sparkling joy as the evening
wears on.
And I can no longer drive safely in the dark, so I need a designated
driver.
Toby Keith summed it up perfectly when he sang “I’m not as good as
I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.
Are Your Affairs in Order?
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions
- starting with New Year’s Resolutions.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to
have your affairs in order to protect you and your loved ones. Good
powers of attorney for health care and finance often avoid the need
to get an adult guardianship. The Vegas Voice has done a good job of
documenting what a nightmare that can become.
A funded trust-based estate plan avoids probate, saving both time
and money. A better estate plan prepares people for the possibility of
long-term care and protects assets from Nevada’s Enhanced Medicaid
Recovery.
No estate plan, no Will, only a Will, an unfunded or underfunded
Trust all mean probate. Intending to get estate planning done or
planning to put your checking accounts into your trust is paving the
road of good intentions.
Why is this bad? Imagine a married couple with 500k insurance
policies on each other. The first spouse dies. The insurance company
writes a check that gets deposited into the checking account which
hasn’t been funded into the trust.
Then the second spouse dies, and the policy beneficiary is the first
spouse. The heirs are now facing a probate with legal costs over $100k.
What if I or if I’m married, my wife gets dementia, Parkinson’s or
Alzheimer’s and must go into a Memory care facility, or skilled nursing
facility? They cost an average of $9,000 a month or about $108K a year.
Remember Medicaid now functions like a loan. Medicaid will
help pay the high cost of care, but only after you have spent down to
meet some strict asset limits.
And when you die, Medicaid gets repaid the money spent on your
care before your estate pays your heirs. A good estate plan helps avoid
impoverishment caused by the high cost of long-term care.
What if you have done no planning and find yourself heading into a
skilled nursing or memory care facility? There are often steps that can
still be made to protect some of your assets. The term for this is Crisis
Planning.
Everyone’s situation is different, the devil is in the details, and you
only get one chance to get it right. Take the time and do your estate
planning right. Your estate plan should provide peace of mind, knowing
your money will help the people you care about.
That’s That!
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
just celebrated another birthday. Never mind
I which one, but I’m over the hill beginning
my slide down to somewhere I don’t want to go! I
see wrinkles, gray hair, and extra pounds.
Revlon conceals the gray hair, and a basic black wardrobe helps hide
those extra pounds, but there isn’t much I can do about the wrinkles,
unless I want to go the way of a facelift.
I considered having one a few years ago, but my hips started
complaining. The doctor told me if I wanted to walk without pain the
hips needed fixing, not the face.
Okay! Two hip replacements, one after another. Now, I thought, what
about that facelift?
I shouldn’t have muttered aloud because my shoulders were
eavesdropping, and they decided they wanted my attention… to heck
with the face. Really?!
Not My “Fountain of Youth”
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
My daughter’s wedding is around the
corner, and I’m gearing up for pictures
and meeting new family members. She recently
told me about this new “fountain of youth” product she heard about,
and I decided to try it.
It’s a gel moisturizer from Germany for $70 called Biotulin-Supreme
Skin Gel. That’s pricey in my book, but the claims were so amazing, I’d
pay double for anything that really works.
It claims to be a natural alternative to Botox, eliminating wrinkles
and tightening your face in 60 minutes and lasting up to 24 hours.
It has 3.7 out of 5 for reviews. The positives were as strong as the
negatives, so people either loved it or said it was a waste of money.
Unfortunately for me, I may have gotten caught up in the hype of a
product “too good to be true” and perhaps expected too much.
It’s a nice, fragrance-free gel that goes on well. You can apply makeup
over it if you wear foundation.
For my trial, after applying I waited but nothing happened. I
continued to use it for several days, still nothing.
My face wasn’t tighter, my wrinkles weren’t gone. It did seem to work
as a nice moisturizer though. Since I don’t wear foundation, the added
hydration is nice but for the price there are other things on the market
like the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel for only $20.
Two shoulder surgeries later and I must say I didn’t feel up to another
bout with a surgeon.
My face took it rather well, not a word of condemnation. But it did
stare at me every time I walked by a mirror, swinging my hips and
arms.
The aging continued and I thought about the past. I was so anxious
to grow up. I used to say, “I’m nine and a half years old,” and then,
“I’m almost eighteen.” Wow!
Marriage and three babies. I began to wonder if anyone spoke in full
sentences. Then the kids suddenly finished college and left home. I sat
on their beds and cried.
Hubby said, “It’s time. You don’t want me to support them until
they’re ready for Social Security, do you?” I cried harder.
Mother Nature didn’t slow up either. More wrinkles and inches added
to my already ample figure. “Slowdown that paint brush, Mom!” She
didn’t.
Then it hit me. Our lives are like books. Some are short and some are
longer. I’m lucky to still be writing a new chapter. With a bit more luck
I’ll soon be competing with War & Peace!
Ain’t it the truth - when you’re young, you want to be older. When
you’re older, you want to be younger. That’s that!
A former schoolteacher, Dianne Sebis Hahn writes for children too.
Presently, Dianne has eight books available on Amazon.com. You
can also see her on SCA TV.
22
January 2022
All that being said, my 37-year-old daughter loves it! She uses it
around her eye area for her crow’s feet and feels it does a great job. Is it
an age thing? Maybe.
Does it work better on skin that doesn’t need as much help? Perhaps.
Either way, I will continue to use it until it is gone. It may not help, but
for $70 as long as it doesn’t hurt, I’m not wasting a drop.
Like most things in life, what might be great for one person, may not
be for another. Our skin, health, and own genetic makeup, along with
our expectations often account for the results.
Don’t let a few failures stop you from trying new things. Make 2022
the year you live life to the fullest and don’t waste a moment!
Arias Returns to the Stage
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
The rebirth of
Las Vegas as
pandemic restrictions
wane marks the third New Beginning for
Tony Arias, the long-time singer/funnyman
who’s been delighting audiences since
arriving in town as a teen in 1985. The night
of his high school graduation party, “after
everyone went to sleep, I packed my car and
came to Vegas.”
Although he was just 17, his towering size,
“I was 6” tall at nine years old and my voice
had changed” assured locals that Arias had
reached adulthood. He quickly landed his first
job when the switchboard operator at a local
radio station, hearing his booming baritone
voice, mistakenly transferred Arias‘call to
apply for an advertising sales job instead to
the Program Director.
A week later, he was the midnight on-air
DJ. That exposure created a chain of job offers
including private parties which had been
the roots of his professional career. “When I was eight, I was doing
weddings and Bar Mitzvahs.
I didn’t even know what they
were but the food was great.”
Arias’ music career began
early, as a pre-teen soloist
in recreation centers and
churches near his California
home. ”People saw me
everywhere.”
Las Vegas, Arias’ first
Beginning, hit an early snag.
As the fill-in ringmaster at
Circus Circus, an expletive
blurted into the microphone
when the highwire act nosedived
into the net ending
that career after six hours.
But his radio time had
opened doors to opportunity
in the casinos. He was the
slot host/announcer at the
Tropicana and Desert Inn
and official voice of the
Hilton and their commercial and in-house events.
At 18, he accepted the job as Midnight Singer at the Riviera, a 3-hour
gig following Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. “That’s where I met Tom
Jones, Debbie Reynolds, Red Buttons,” he recalls.
Without mentioning names, he says the “connected” casino bosses
“liked me because I didn’t ask questions. They told me that I could be
funny, but not too funny.”
After 25 years, Arias retired. “Cirque changed everything,” The shows
he appeared in, Jubilee, Follies and others were gone. “My form of
entertainment went out with the dinosaurs, replaced by the video game
crowd.”
A second Beginning began ten years later. Husband Scott observed,
“You need to get in front of people.”
They soon found inspiration on a cruise. While viewing on-board
entertainment, Scott commented, “You can do that.”
Returning home, Arias booked the Clark County Library Theater.
“It was like I had never left the stage.” Just months later, friend and
producer Stacey Jones had Arias booked on the luxury Azamara line.
“I was rebooked on the ship before the cruise ended.” The longtime
Strip showman took his shows to local audiences before COVID
slammed the door.
Beginning #3 is well underway, prompted by Arias’ feeling that after
a year’s lockdown, “Audiences need the human contact again.” He’s
returning to local stages, including a tribute to the legendary crooners
at the Clark County Library February 26 (Tickets TonyArias.com) and
The Vegas Voice Valentine’s Day variety show at the Starbright Theater
in Sun City Summerlin.
Kyle and Kellan
By: Diane Rosen / Animal Magnetism
I
’ve always loved dogs, but that love grew
even deeper when I volunteered at a no-kill
animal shelter in the Chicago area. My husband
Phillip and I went to the Buddy Foundation
every Thursday evening for nine years. We walked and fed the dogs,
gave them their meds, and showered them with love and affection that
many had never experienced before.
Kyle and Kellan were two older Bichon Frises who were rescued from
a puppy mill and brought to Buddy. When they first arrived, they were
huddled together, shaking in the corner of the kennel, hair dirty and
matted, and brown tear stains under their crusted eyes. They were timid
and afraid.
The following week, Kyle and Kellan were significantly different
dogs. They now came to the front of the kennel when we stopped by,
and accepted little treats through the bars.
Over time, we were able to pick them up and take them outside for
fresh air. Neither dog had ever touched grass before, and watching
them feel it under their paws brought us to tears.
With the love and patience of dozens of volunteers, Kyle and Kellan
learned to go for walks, play with squeaky toys, and learned that ear
rubs, belly scratches and most people are good things.
The thing I remember the most about them was the way they loved
Soul Retrieval
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
“
We are all lost souls, trying to find our
way home.” - Seth Adam Smith
We’ve all heard of’ lost souls, or hopeless souls
that claim they will never be the same again.
It’s true. Whenever soul gutting is experienced
(abuse, loss of a loved one, displacement, etc.) a
part of our vital essence separates from its core.
Whether knowingly or not, unconsciously
these souls spend tremendous amounts of
psychic energy searching for their missing
self. This survival mechanism protects us by
fragmenting the soul to avoid the full impact of
the pending, debilitating pain.
Sandra Ingerman, author and leading
authority on Soul Loss & Soul Retrieval (35
years), explains that these traumatized souls
often feel a disconnection mentally and/or physically. Ingerman states,
“That prolonged dissociation produces a nameless void.”
Eventually, it shows itself through a loss of meaning, direction,
vitality, mission, purpose, identity, and genuine connection. This
disconnect could also be the root cause of many physical/mental
symptoms; chronic depression, PTSD, immune deficiency issues,
unhealing grief, addiction, etc.
Shaman Jill Kuykendall describes the three soul parts as mental, body,
26
January 2022
sleeping with Phillip
in the playroom.
Phillip would put
both dogs on his
tummy and they’d all
fall asleep together.
With each breath, his
stomach would rise
and fall, taking his
two little buddies for
a ride.
They’d go up and down, up and down, to the delight of all the other
volunteers who would watch them through the window. Those two little
dogs had found peace at Buddy.
We wondered if they’d ever get adopted, since they were older and a
bonded pair. We weren’t about to separate them.
Kyle and Kellan did eventually get adopted together. They were lucky.
Puppy mill dogs usually don’t experience love.
This year let’s all pledge to help our local rescues and shelters. Please
and spirit, aligning perfectly with Freud’s Id theory of superego, ego,
and subconscious. Unfortunately, Western medicine has no framework
for this kind of diagnosis because it only deals with imbalance when it
appears on a physical and/or mental level.
Kuykendall believes that the missing soul fragment most likely
resides in one of three other realms. The lower
world, a protective place that animal and plant
spirits inhabit, a middle world, that is akin to
the dream state with both positive and negative
attributes and an upper world, a place of
divine knowledge that is home to angels and
ancestral spirits.
Kuykendall uses deep prayer and spirit
medicine to enter a heightened state in the
spirit realm. There, Kuykendall can conduct
retrievals and repairs. She also assures us
that the divine can work with any religious
affiliation.
So, how can you heal?
1. Connect with a local or long-distance Soul Retrieval practitioner
(Check out Ingerman’s website for referrals).
2. Write the question: “What is the main cause of my soul loss?”
Then use automatic writing to respond.
New Year’s Resolution: Try Dawdling!
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
Dawdle: Take one’s time, waste time, idle,
linger, take more time than necessary,
to spend time without haste or purpose.
In my opinion, dawdling has gotten a bad rap.
It’s been instilled in us from a young age that dawdling is morally
undesirable.
On a list of “Dos and Don’ts”
dawdling definitely falls under the
“Don’t” column. “Don’t dawdle
over your breakfast. You’ll be late
for school.” Or “Stop dawdling, and
do your homework if you want to
get into Harvard.”
In life’s second stage, we’re the
ones issuing the anti-dawdling
warnings to our kids, as we rush
them out the door in the morning
and ourselves off to work. After
school, there are appointments,
games, lessons, and rushing here
and there with no time to spare.
Then the day finally comes when your last child leaves home for
Punxsutawney State Junior College (you tried your best) and the color
of your life begins to change from fire-engine red to salmon. Not quite
peaceful pink, because you’re still rushing yourself out the door each
morning to get to work on time. And the dog, who requires walking,
remained at home.
Eventually you cross the magic threshold. You’re a person of a
certain age. You’re a retired person of a certain age.
Life finally takes on a pinkish glow. Not exactly my personal favorite
color, but pink is associated with calm. So congratulations, you have
earned the right to dawdle.
As for me, I plan to do my best
dawdling at breakfast. I’ve never
been a morning person, and
frankly don’t understand people
who are.
I’ve always relied on that first cup
of coffee to get my engine revved,
whereas morning people act like
they had a caffeine drip inserted in
their veins at bedtime. But now, my
mornings will be luxurious.
My life will finally be in lockstep
with my circadian rhythm, which
doesn’t awaken until 10 am. I will take that second cup of coffee, watch
the news on TV, even do a crossword. Maybe two.
How much time has elapsed? An hour? The beauty is it doesn’t matter.
No early morning appointments, please. No breakfast dates, no golf
games. I plan to be way too busy dawdling and loving every precious
second.
But at some point I’ll spring into action. There’s that little cricket
who sits on my shoulder and warns me that my dawdling will turn into
sloth if I spend one minute more in my bathrobe.
I will be happily productive for the remaining hours, right up until
bedtime. Because tomorrow morning brings a new opportunity for me
to elevate dawdling to an art form.
And maybe, just maybe, I’ll dawdle back to my computer to write. But
first, another crossword!
Inspiration from the Neighborhood
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Sometimes we run short of inspiration;
especially when trying to get something
done that is so daunting that giving up may be
the best choice. You’ve been there, I’ve been there - we’ve all been there
in some shape or form.
Working through perplexing issues that have come along as a result
of serving our country, we veterans can easily throw in the towel and try
to use the “silent method” - which is sweeping it under the rug rather
than facing it head on. Believe me, I’ve tried
that one, and it works for a while, but the past
always catches up.
For me, I just didn’t like the time or place
that the bad genie decided to come out of
the bottle. It was not only embarrassing, but
dangerous as well. Digging deeper takes some
guts, and when we decide to do it, we may just
need a little extra push to get up and move
out again.
Years ago, I was doing work helping
veterans process their challenges of getting separated from the service,
and for many, dealing with the aftermath of war. Now, as the new year
begins, I’m doing some reflecting on those times and thinking of how
Mr. Rogers became such a special inspiration for me.
In the early ‘90s I had, just in passing, mentioned to some of the other
volunteers how much the TV show, “Welcome to the Neighborhood”
put me at peace. I told them there were times when I had been very
fritzed out, and that if
I simply watched an
episode or two of Mr.
Rogers, I calmed down
and found some much
needed relaxation.
Well, unbeknownst
to me, one of the ladies
in the office sent off a
copy of my first book,
“Nam Vet: Making Peace with Your Past” to
Fred Rogers and told him how his show was
affecting me.
A few weeks later I was blown away to
receive an unexpected personal letter from
him.
It came at a time when I really needed the encouragement to
continue the mission. Needless to say, the letter hangs on my studio
wall reminding me of his immense goodness as a human being, and
how much he inspired me when I needed it.
It is my 2022 hope for all of you, that if you’re in need of a “push”,
that someone, or some special happening, comes along to get you up
and going again, just like Fred did for me. Happy New Year.
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans. All can be found on Amazon at: http://www.
Never Too Old for New
Tricks
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
Many young people believe that the older
you get, the less inclined you are to adopt
new technology. Unfortunately, that’s a stereotype that those of us who
use computers and smartphones everyday have to deal with.
In order to combat that misconception, we have to keep up with what’s
new to stay relevant. The same is true for automotive manufacturers.
Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Ford, Dodge, Rolls-Royce, and a
handful of other automotive brands are centenarians, while others like
Toyota, Volkswagen and Honda are in their 80s. Even Hyundai Motor
Company is over 50.
In order to combat the image of old and out of touch, each of these
brands is venturing deep into the technology abyss by introducing
electric vehicles, hydrogen power, and autonomous driving. And it’s all
exciting news.
The Electric Vehicle
Conundrum
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
There is a catastrophe brewing that few in
positions of power realize is coming! Our
President and Congress are aggressively moving forward in the
allocation of billions of taxpayer dollars for deploying thousands of
electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the country.
The calamity that he believes will be avoided by this deployment,
will, in fact, be a colossal failure!
Don’t get me wrong! I firmly believe that Climate Change is real and
that electric vehicles will play a pivotal role in reversing the alarming
trend. But the manner in which it is approached today will not work!
The reasons are twofold.
First, all of the charging stations will need to be “plugged in” to the
very frail and vulnerable national power grid! The system currently
operated cannot handle the increase in power demand that millions
of EV’s will require!
General Motors recently introduced its latest manufacturing facility
in Michigan called Factory ZERO, which will focus on building electric
vehicles for the upcoming GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV, the
Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the Cruise Origin, an all-electric selfdriving
the basis for the majority of GM future vehicles.
Ford is developing Blue Oval City in Stanton, Tennessee, an
environmentally and technologically advanced campus that will
produce the next-generation electric F-Series trucks and batteries.
Toyota is investing in a new $1.3 billion automotive battery
While the majority of the industry is focused on electrification,
Hyundai is working toward popularizing hydrogen fuel by 2040.
It believes that hydrogen will play a significant role in building a
sustainable future to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels.
Hyundai isn’t just considering it for personal vehicles, but more
toward commercial vehicles. It estimates that hydrogen energy will
account for 18 percent of global energy demand by 2050, help cut
CO2 emissions by more than six billion tons a year, and create over 30
million new jobs.
So the next time anyone questions your ability to understand new
technology, let them know that old dogs can still learn new tricks.
Just last summer NV Energy implored owners of electric vehicles
(only numbering in the low hundreds) to forego plugging in to the
power grid because demand on the system for residences was too much
to handle. We would all be subject to rolling “blackouts.”
Second, even if the power grid was able to handle the demand, few
have considered what powers and fuels the turbines and generators
that feed the power grid and allows EV’s to be re-charged. Surprise, it is
natural gas, oil and coal!
All of which are the culprits of air toxins that EV’s are intended to be
avoided! So, is there an answer? YES!
Challenge the innovators to perfect a system whereby charging and
recharging EV’s would come directly from the sun’ avoiding the power
grid completely. Fantasy? Well I disagree!
John Kennedy challenged the scientific community in 1963 to “...go
to the moon and return safely to Earth... “before 1970. To many that
was considered impossible. But we did it!
The problem today is the lack of commitment we have to get it done!
We have always been able to overcome insurmountable odds when we
really need to act! That is a cornerstone of who we are as a people!
Purses & Bags - Oh My!
By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents”
While doing my closet shift between seasons,
I save the purses for last. What is a purse?
By any name a satchel, clutch, pochette, bag,
handbag, even a pocketbook. Then there are those spectacular ones
that have an iconic name: Hermes Della,
Birkin, Louis Vuitton, etc.
I always see long lines outside Louis
Vuitton – and NO, not for a sale, but for
people that must have these pricy and
sometimes priceless bags. Do I covet?
Maybe, and yes.
But back to reality. I remember one
of my first purchases of a purse that my
mother did not buy for me or handed
down.
It was Thom McCann, grey leatherette with a white leatherette band,
and a covered white large “button.” The button was about 1 ½ inches
across.
And I bought shoes to match! Kitten heeled slings with the same
detail. I loved them.
Since then, buying or wearing a matching or close-to-matching shoe
and handbag was important to me. And not to mention wallets!
When in Paris, a lifetime ago, we went into Longchamp on Champs-
Elysees and Evan purchased a beautiful soft yellow bag for me (the
color was called corn). Glorious!
When we were flying home, and settled at the airport in Paris, I had
some Parisian money left and decided to look in the shops. And guess
what?
I found a beautiful, though rather large,
wallet to match. Of course, I bought it! And
that wallet got more use than the bag.
The bag has been retired (given away),
but the wallet, though worn at the edges,
is still in my possession. By the way, it
has a special section for a passport. How
continental!.
Stories aside, I have more purses than I
really need. And I have promised myself that if compelled to buy a new
bag, purse, clutch, or pocketbook, I must give away two that I already
have. It’s called downsizing.
I still don’t understand why it is called a pocketbook. None of my
purses fit in a pocket, and I certainly don’t read it.
Anyone with a clue? Please drop me an email.
Let’s Get the Word Out!
By: Carol Chapman
From McDonald’s Quarter-Pounder to
Disneyworld, to Amtrak and Hamburger
Helper, these are a few well-known places and
things turning 50 in 2022. Along with that, people
besides Jon Hamm, Lance Armstrong, and Elon Musk are reaching
their 50-year milestone birthdays this year.
You’ve probably noticed the new neighbors moving into our senior
communities. It’s a new year which brings new beginnings for millions
of Americans.
A New Year - New Goals!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
WOW! Another new year already! Where did
2021 go? I turned a magic 77 year young
last month and love it! I have great friends,
family, a home, wonderful jobs, health and two beautiful fur babies.
I’m on to new goals this year. I don’t make resolutions, just new
goals. One thing that I will do this year is put an empty jar on my
kitchen counter, put happy thoughts or events into the jar and then in
January 2023 take out all the happiness that has transpired throughout
the year and read them.
I did that for 2021 and I was surprised at my “happy thoughts!”
We will celebrate our twentieth anniversary this year. For two decades
we’ve supplied the senior community with durable medical equipment,
wellness checks, and resources since our founders, Chuck Davis and
Favil West, recognized the need and took action in 2002, creating The
Foundation Assisting Seniors.
We’ve grown despite the fact that we don’t have the luxury of a large
advertising budget. Since our inception, we’ve provided more than
360,000 assists to surrounding communities.
As a nonprofit that operates on contributions from individuals, along
with support from sponsors who help fund our events and operations,
we depend on you to get the word out about our services and programs.
Seniors should know that we loan medical equipment to those who
are recovering from knee or hip replacements to name a few. For those
who live alone, we provide peace of mind through the HowRU and
Medication Reminder programs.
Families rest easy knowing that their loved one can safely and
comfortably remain in their own home with the support The
Foundation provides at no cost to the individual.
Please inform neighbors and friends about our programs. As the only
501(c)3 nonprofit senior organization providing these services in the
Las Vegas Valley, we are dependent upon you to fund our operations.
In the new year, we hope you’ll reach out to learn more about us and
spread the word.
January 2022
So we all gained a few pounds in 2021? Don’t stress about it. Just take
it easy – better to lose a few pounds at a time slowly than to crash diet.
Try to enjoy the goodies if you must – but in moderation. I try not
to deny myself of any of the wonderful sweets, chocolates, etc. – even
indulging in a holiday drink or so.
I found one secret to keeping your alcohol in moderation is to have a
sip of water every so often when drinking wine or cocktail. It sure helps!
I also try to nibble on some veggies before venturing out to a party.
Then I am not so famished when I get there and eat much more than
I intended!
Life is shorter than we think! Make 2022 a year to reflect on what we
did in 2021. Set some goals (not
resolutions!) to try to attain what you didn’t do in 2021.
Make a conscious effort to exercise more, try to lose those added
pounds that suddenly appeared around the middle, eat healthier, enjoy
your friends, and make new friends. Enjoy each and every given day.
My Thoughts on Aging
By: Linda Salmon / Guest Column
want to share some of my reflections on
I turning 80 years old. When I was 79 it did
not seem that old, but now that I am 80 it really
seems old.
When I was a young girl, I always thought all old ladies looked like
Eleanor Roosevelt. They all wore funny dresses, strange shoes and put
their thinning hair in a bun.
And even though Eleanor Roosevelt didn’t live to be 80, when she was
still in her 70s I had to ask myself did Eleanor bowl in a mixed bowling
league once a week? Did Eleanor golf in a ladies club every week? Did
she walk one mile every morning?
Did Eleanor play bunco with friends or go to champagne Sunday
brunches or happy hour at local restaurants once a month? Did Mrs.
Roosevelt wear short shorts, flip-flops or tennis shoes?
38
January 2022
Because I was pretty sure all of these answers were NO it made me
somehow feel younger at 80 years old.
Remembering that all my life I had fine, straight hair and always
wanted curly hair. Well, in my late 70s my hair started to curl. I now
have curly hair at 80 years old.
I have a good memory and wonderful memories about my teenage
years in Burbank, California, including my three close friends, Jean,
Linda and Michelle. Michelle and Linda never made it to 80 and this
makes me sad, but I still talk to them and remind them of funny times
and stories we had. Many times this makes me smile.
I have regrets, but I try not to beat myself up reminiscing about them.
I have now come to accept that I am 80 years old and will, hopefully
continue to enjoy every day of my life that I have left and continue to
be happy and content.
And why shouldn’t I be happy? I can do more things than Eleanor
Roosevelt could when she got old - plus I now have curly hair.
The Cactus
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
It’s time to take a break from our outdoor
gardening and to learn about one of our
best-known native plants: Cactus.
Its earliest Cactus started to evolve over 550 million years ago
when the “connected” continents of the two Americas and Africa
broke apart and drifted across the oceans. This event led to the
emergence of two different, but genetically similar plants.
The African Euphorbia developed a noxious milky sap to protect
it from being eaten and continued to grow in Africa. The Cactus
developed protective spines/needles to protect itself from a harsh
climate and from predators in the Americas.
The Cactus stems evolved into pads, columns or cushions
while their leaves changed into spiney needles. The pads and
spines permitted increased water storage and protection from
hungry animals.
The skins developed thick “waxy” textures that prevented
evaporation caused by the desert’s hot and dry climate. In addition,
they developed protective fuzzy hairs that would filter out the
harsh sun as well as providing insulation from extreme temperatures.
The root system evolved, changing from deep vertical growth
to shallow and horizontally expansive. This evolutionary change
allowed for the roots to absorb the scant rainfall on the topsoil before
evaporation occurred.
The shapes of the plants also help them to survive. Barrel-shaped
cactus have vertical ribbing that carries any water straight towards
the roots. Others have curved concave pads that catch any moisture
directing it downward to the roots.
These plants developed propagation methods in addition to seeds!
If a portion breaks off and is left on the ground, it will go dormant
(even for extended periods of time) until soil and water make
contact.
In time, the cactus will grow roots and begin to grow. Even the
spines can help the cactus to spread. Animals brush by the spines,
causing plant pieces to stick.
Eventually these pieces are transported until falling off in new
locations. They take root and grow, helping the cactus to spread to
new areas.
Tossing paperwork into trash that contains
your personal information is positively
dangerous. Scammers can steal your identity!
Destroy junk mail and either save important papers in a secure
place or scrap health reports, bank statements, and bills because they
customarily have your name, address, and account number in the
heading, at the top of each page, and on the envelope.
If you don’t have a shredder you’d be
wise to obtain one. You don’t need a heavyduty
model but rather a cross-cut personal
shredder.
Check features carefully because they vary
from one brand to another. Does it have a
clear front so you can see how full it is?
How long can you use it before it needs to rest between usage? How
many sheets can you feed at a time? Does it accept credit cards and
stapled material?
Also consider weight, ease of portability, and measurements that will
fit into your available space. Of course it will need maintenance but
there’s no dirty inking.
Holiday Hangover
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
During the Holidays, no doubt you had
a ball stuffing yourself with chocolates,
cakes, puddings and all your favorite foods. You
hoisted the Holiday cup of your favorite ale many
times in honor of your best friends and family members.
You received and gave great gifts that delighted you and others you
love. You had fun singing your heart out (even though you were not
blessed with perfect pitch) to your most beloved Holiday songs.
In other words, the Holidays were stupendous! Now that they are over,
the “real” fun begins!
First, your 8,000 decorations need to be taken down (yes, those
massive strings of jumbled lights too) and put back in their boxes to
be stored for next year’s Holiday. Did you really scale that 20’ ladder
carrying those 100 pound boxes and lifted them up into the attic?
You now have to figure out what to do with the “bad” presents. Like
Aunt Effie’s brilliant orange vase with ugly plastic snap dragons in it.
Bury it in the backyard?
Your brother’s framed picture of himself in his Speedo proudly
flexing all his muscles. He recently lost 50 pounds and wants the world
to see his new body.
Unfortunately, he started off at 5’3” tall and weighing in at 489
and is now a trim 439 in a thong Speedo. Where do you display the
treasured picture?
The neighbor’s famous fruitcake. Send it off to the War Department
as a suggested new bomb? How about those returns? Isn’t it just a joy to
put your life on the line battling for a store parking space?
Once you find one, procure a cart with a “wonky” wheel, pile the
many items that didn’t work, were missing parts, were not as pictured,
too small/big/short/long or just plain “butt ugly” you must get to the
back of the mile long return line.
You just want to return your items and go home. However, you are
sure a relative of Hitler is the Return Supervisor and she is giving
everyone a very difficult time.
But don’t dismay! Relief is just around the corner – tax season!
I’m Doing the “Wheat Belly Weigh”
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
The newest craze to hit the diet circuit and
I am TOTALLY connected to the diet circuit,
is the craze of throwing wheat out of your life
completely - lock, stock and bagel, right out the
window or into the landfill.
They’ve now decided, and by
“they” I mean “not me”, that
wheat is basically Satan in the
form of a cookie. And if you
don’t give it up, you’re going
to die of belly fat, probably
sometime next week.
And so, in the interest of my
readers and to become a part
of our country’s serious weight
loss research, I have decided to
join the wheat-free revolution
as soon as is feasible, although
certainly not today.
I’ve been so busy this
holiday season that I haven’t
had time to buy all the non-wheat substitutes for the things I normally
eat, like Golden Grahams, sesame bagels, pecan pie, and Oreos. (I’m
sure there is a wheat-free substitute for Oreos, like...uh...Snickers!)
You never want to rush into these new fads full tilt; at least until you
have all of the accompanying tools. Like if you’re starting yoga, you
wouldn’t want to go in there without the correct yoga pants, a cute little
mat and good socks with no holes in them.
Or, say you’re joining a biking group. You’ll want a really cool helmet
and a biking outfit in neon colors so bright they’re annoying people in
the space lab.
So, until I have the correct food substitutes in my house, I cannot
effectively participate in this wheat-free trend with any real passion. I
saw Dr. William Davis, who wrote “Wheat Belly; Lose the Wheat, Lose
the Weight” and after years of studying the wheat phenomenon, he has
whittled it all down to one basic principle: SPIT OUT THAT DOUGHNUT,
YOU BIG OINK!
I haven’t actually read Dr. Davis’s book, but I’ve tried to find out the
basics of the wheat-free plan online and I’ve been modestly successful.
However, I looked at something called the “Wheat Belly Blog”, and saw
several letters from wheat-free wannabes to Dr. Davis, and many replies
from the good doctor himself!
But I’m kind of questioning its validity because, for example, in reply
to a reader’s question about whether she could eat quinoa (which is
supposed to be pronounced “keen-wah”, which is ridiculous and was
probably devised by some nerd at Wikipedia who wanted to prank us
all, so I simply pronounce it the way it’s spelled - “Kwin-o-ah”, and
refuse to discuss it further) the doctor allegedly wrote, “Sure, if you
want to kill yourself!”
Now, I’m not a huge Kwin-o-ah fan myself, although in some recipes
it can be quite tasty. But, I think, if this truly is the doctor responding,
this may be overstating his case just a bit.
I mean, are you telling me that if I became a Kwin-o-ah devotee
and began eating it regularly, that I might, while dining on Kwin-o-ah
with friends and family, suddenly clutch my throat, fall to the floor
and slump into a Kwin-o-ah
coma? Because I find that odd.
In any event, the wheat
abolishment begins tomorrow.
I’m in the mountains right
now, and all wheat containing
items will be thrown from the
deck.
I’ve put notices on the trees,
so the deer, possums and bears
are already lined up in folding
chairs down there. This is not
however a diet.
This is not a New Year’s
resolution. This is a lifestyle,
and - wait a minute...is there
wheat in bourbon?
State of Travel
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
Here’s my take of the state of travel. It’s
based on what I experienced through
conversations I’ve had with airline and cruise
line personnel these past few weeks.
As many of you know, last month, I traveled from my home in New
York to Las Vegas. My wife Sharon and I spent a week preparing for
Vegas Voyagers 2022.
We flew on Delta and were pleasantly
surprised at how smooth and effortless the
experience was. And while the flights were
90% full, everyone “worked and played well
with others.”
The Delta staff was attentive and efficient. Full food and
snack service was provided, and our flights were not only
on time, but early. All in all, a great airline experience.
We met with Voyagers scheduled to go on our two Vegas Voyagers
upcoming cruises, the RCCL Navigator of the Seas to the Mexican
Riviera, February 21-28 and the Princess Cruise Line’s cruise March
26–April 2 along the Pacific coast. In preparing for these trips we
informed all of the current protocols initiated by the cruise lines.
For example, cruise capacity as of this writing has been limited to
50%. With those numbers, when you cruise, you will feel as if the ship
is empty.
There will be plenty of elbow room with good social distancing. While
masks are still required indoors on the ship, they are not required in
dining rooms and bars when eating or drinking.
There is also no mask requirement on open decks. Proof of full
vaccination and a negative Covid test
within two days of departure however are
still required.
With all these proactive measures in
place, we are happy to announce three more
“Bus to the Boat” cruises for late 2022 and
early 2023. They are:
1. Discovery Princess 7 night Mexican
Riviera, December 10-17, 2022,
2. A 10 night Mexico cruise on the Crown Princess, January 6–16,
2023 and
3. A 15 night Hawaiian Island cruise on the Crown Princess February
15–March 2, 2023.
Seated comfortably, John leans forward to
talk about his
Southern Nevada
Honor Flight. In person, he is disarming
and at 81, appears younger than his
years.
As I question him, John had little
interest in talking about himself. Instead,
he is quick to praise Honor Flights and
how much they do for military veterans.
When talking about himself, the focus
is on the present, not the past. The praise
for the time and effort volunteers put
into the program.
John left Las Vegas on an early Friday
morning, spent all day Saturday sightseeing
with a banquet that evening
and returned home on Sunday. John’s
grandson, stationed in Norfolk with the
US Navy attended the banquet.
John was scheduled for his Honor Flight three times between 2020 -
2021. Those trips were cancelled due to Covid.
Southern Nevada’s first Honor Flight trip since 2019 took place
in October 2021. John was fortunate his daughter, herself a military
veteran, initiated his application and was his guardian. Guardians saw
to the veteran’s needs and that their experiences go safely and smoothly.
If you haven’t heard of Honor Flights, they are a volunteer nonprofit
organization that began in 2005
as a way to pay tribute to World War II
veterans by taking them to Washington
D.C. to see the World War II Memorial on
the National Mall built in their honor.
It grew to include Korean and Vietnam
veterans.
Like all wartime veterans, John vividly
remembers the first time he entered a
combat zone. A Vietnam veteran, during
his life John has seen much that has
changed and much which has not.
His full activity day in Washington
included the VIP treatment throughout
his trip and opportunity to visit the
war memorials, especially the Vietnam
My Mom & the Rose Parade
By: Crystal Merryman-Sarbacker / Out & About and patio cushions to block out the cold night air.
W
I’m afraid occasionally we risked annoying people
hen I was a little girl, New Year’s was really
who had already been in their choice viewing spot for hours. But my
fun because my family always celebrated
mom was a good cook and if anyone was
the holiday at the
offended or inconvenienced by our sudden
Rose Parade, one of
appearance, they were quickly invited
the most picturesque and exciting events
to join our group and enjoy my mom’s
in the United States. Actually, we lived in
homemade fried chicken. It always worked
South Pasadena, a quiet neighboring
like a charm, and added to the fun.
community, where my brothers and I grew
As many New Year’s passed, my brothers
up.
and I grew up, and my mom and dad
It had good schools, tree lined streets,
decided they no longer needed a large house
and its own movie theatre. But I think my
in South Pasadena. My dad was an artist,
mom was especially proud to live there,
so he talked about moving to the country
because South Pasadena traditionally had
or seaside, but mom immediately started looking for something she
its own float in the nearby Rose Parade, which was a source of pride
considered to be more suitable, which meant my mom wanted a house
for the entire community.
in Pasadena close to the Rose Parade route.
My mom wasn’t interested in volunteering to work on the South
When she found a small bungalow only three blocks to Colorado
Pasadena float, but she delighted in taking visiting family members on
Boulevard, she knew she had found her dream house. And after many
New Year’s Eve outings to watch the float take shape as it was covered
years of going to the Rose Parade, she had perfected her plans.
in flowers. Then after midnight and a fireworks display, my mom,
Shortly before New Year’s, mom would carry a few folding chairs
dad, brothers, and visiting aunts, uncles and cousins, would head for
to Colorado Boulevard, tie them together and mark them as reserved,
Colorado Boulevard, the major Rose Parade route.
according to new city rules. Then at the scheduled time, she returned to
Everyone was looking for a good vantage point for parade watching
her reserved spot and when given the City’s signal, moved her chairs to
the next morning. And magically, with my mom’s guidance, we always
the adjacent street area.
found a great spot on the sidewalk, with enough room for our blankets
It was simple and worked like a charm. No one had to sleep on
the sidewalk unless they really thought it was fun, so everything was
comfortable, easy, and the fried chicken was still delicious...But now it
was provided by the Colonel!
Please Note: The Rose Parade is one of the oldest and most popular
holiday events in the United States. Founded in 1890, by members
of the Valley Hunt Club, who started a local tradition of decorating
their carriages with flowers on New Year›s Day, it has been annually
delighting the Pasadena population and 37 million others, every year
on New Year›s Day.
Thanks to television, cable, and satellite transmission, the Rose
Parade has worldwide coverage and typically features at least forty floats,
twenty marching bands, countless decorated horses and carriages, over
a route which is five miles long and so strenuous it takes months of
training to build enough stamina to complete the Parade.
Selection for the Parade is very competitive, and attracts talented
would-be participants from around the US and many international
locations.
Reserved, ticketed seating is very popular and available for advance
purchase, and open seating areas are also available at no charge. The
2021 Rose Parade was cancelled due to serious COVID outbreaks, but
this was only the fourth cancellation in the 133-year-old history of
the outdoor event. Plans are underway for the 2022 Rose Parade to go
forward.
