Kyle and Kellan

I
’ve always loved dogs, but that love grew
even deeper when I volunteered at a no-kill
animal shelter in the Chicago area. My husband
Phillip and I went to the Buddy Foundation
every Thursday evening for nine years. We walked and fed the dogs,
gave them their meds, and showered them with love and affection that
many had never experienced before.
Kyle and Kellan were two older Bichon Frises who were rescued from
a puppy mill and brought to Buddy. When they first arrived, they were
huddled together, shaking in the corner of the kennel, hair dirty and
matted, and brown tear stains under their crusted eyes. They were timid
and afraid.
The following week, Kyle and Kellan were significantly different
dogs. They now came to the front of the kennel when we stopped by,
and accepted little treats through the bars.
Over time, we were able to pick them up and take them outside for
fresh air. Neither dog had ever touched grass before, and watching
them feel it under their paws brought us to tears.
With the love and patience of dozens of volunteers, Kyle and Kellan
learned to go for walks, play with squeaky toys, and learned that ear
rubs, belly scratches and most people are good things.
The thing I remember the most about them was the way they loved

that claim they will never be the same again.

these souls spend tremendous amounts of
psychic energy searching for their missing
self. This survival mechanism protects us by
fragmenting the soul to avoid the full impact of
the pending, debilitating pain.
Sandra Ingerman, author and leading
authority on Soul Loss & Soul Retrieval (35
years), explains that these traumatized souls
often feel a disconnection mentally and/or physically. Ingerman states,
“That prolonged dissociation produces a nameless void.”
Eventually, it shows itself through a loss of meaning, direction,
vitality, mission, purpose, identity, and genuine connection. This
disconnect could also be the root cause of many physical/mental
symptoms; chronic depression, PTSD, immune deficiency issues,
unhealing grief, addiction, etc.

With each breath, his
stomach would rise
and fall, taking his
two little buddies for
a ride.
They’d go up and down, up and down, to the delight of all the other
volunteers who would watch them through the window. Those two little
dogs had found peace at Buddy.
We wondered if they’d ever get adopted, since they were older and a
bonded pair. We weren’t about to separate them.
Kyle and Kellan did eventually get adopted together. They were lucky.
Puppy mill dogs usually don’t experience love.

and spirit, aligning perfectly with Freud’s Id theory of superego, ego,
and subconscious. Unfortunately, Western medicine has no framework
