“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
Is it Time to Sell Your Home?
Almost every industry is currently struggling with supply chain disruptions. This also
applies to the housing market, where buyer demand far exceeds our housing supply.
Inventory Is at an All-Time Low!
Because purchaser demand is so high, our market is running out of available homes
for sale.
What Does This Mean for Sellers?
Anyone thinking of putting their home on the market should not wait. A Seller will
always negotiate the best deal when demand is high and supply is limited. That’s
exactly the situation in the real estate market today.
Later this year, inventory (and by extension, your competition) will increase as many
homeowners are waiting to put their homes on the market in the late spring and
early summer.
Don’t wait for an increase in competition. If you want to sell in 2022 and you’re
ready to start the process, today is the day to list your house.
Bottom Line:
Call me today to get your house on the market at this optimal time to sell. I will
guide you through the process, and be with you every step of the way. My office is
open seven days a week for your convenience, and I’m looking forward to speaking
with you!
About The Vegas Voice
There is nothing more gratifying than to be honored by your fellow
senior publishers. With that humble statement, we are very proud to
announce that The Vegas Voice received 10 national awards from
the North American Mature Publishers Association (NAMPA) in
2021.
Everything from General Excellence to Senior Issues to Editorials
to Graphics, the judges held (and it remains our unconditional
commitment) that “every issue demonstrates that The Vegas
Voice is paying attention to the needs and interests of its
readers.”
Here We Grow Again!
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
Originally, I was going to write about
how our Vegas Voice TV studio (and
“international” office) was taking shape. I was
even going to make a shameless plug for readers to check out our just
unveiled video website: vegasvoicetv.com while announcing our new
media venture: podcasting.
The attached photo taken at
our latest Vegas Voice “power
meeting” (after we hid the
coffee and doughnuts) was to
demonstrate that while we have
no idea what we’re doing, we’re
sure having fun doing it.
But then at the conclusion of
our Vegas Voice show at Sun City
MacDonald Ranch last month,
something remarkable occurred
as the audience was leaving. And
for yours truly, it was, and will remain one of the most unforgettable
moments of my life.
There was our entertainment editor Evan Davis being thanked by
people for putting this show (and all his shows) together. Something
about great, affordable entertainment for we seniors.
Then there was my “Bronx brother” Vegas Voice Executive Director
Bill Caserta being approached by a couple happily commenting on
his Bill Blurb’s articles and videos. The guy even asked him “if he
heard this one.” Jokes and laughter soon followed.
And then not 3 feet away was someone speaking with my Rana.
The individual had a guardianship/senior abuse concern and when
my Ladylove listened and responded, a few people gathered around to
thank her for her advocacy efforts.
And last but not least, as I was rushing Rana to “let’s go, let’s go”
a couple approached me to let me know how much they are looking
forward to our Vegas Voyagers Phat Pack cruise. When they said “see
you next week” I was thereafter introduced to a woman who most
sincerely thanked me for my “Last Word” non-partisan political
videos and for The Vegas Voice
magazine every month.
All of the above occurred
simultaneously and within
seconds.
Now don’t get me wrong. As my
PILL (partner in love & life) can
attest, I’m not the sentimental
type and I know such kind and
gracious words of support and
thanks doesn’t pay the bills (or
even a gallon of gas).
But it sure made me proud of what The Vegas Voice (and our
“dysfunctional” family) has accomplished over the years.
And we really do have ideas and plans to back up our claim of being
“Nevada’s most powerful senior media resource.” Stay tuned and from
this most humble publisher – thank you.
How Much???
Publisher Dan’s niece Pamela Haft reacts to the price of gas while
attending her cousin’s wedding in Palm Springs, California last month.
Gas was $5.69 a gallon! Luckily her favorite uncle had his credit
card handy.
And see our Down the Road columnist BJ Killeen’s article (page 36)
on a few simple tips that can help alleviate the pain at the pump.
Marry Me
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
This romantic comedy fairy tale pulls at your
heartstrings. It features Jennifer Lopez
as Kat (singer, songwriter, performer) Owen
Wilson, a divorced math teacher raising a 12 year old daughter Lou,
(Chole Culman) and introducing, (Bastian) a sexy superstar male
singer.
Kat was going to marry at one of their superstar concerts until she
found out her husband-to-be was having an affair just before the
wedding ceremony, with her assistant no less. Kat has a meltdown,
standing while wearing her wedding gown, on stage in front of the
audience.
Thoughts of love, truth, and loyalty
flashed through her mind as she focused
on an unassuming man in the audience.
He was surrounded by best friend (Sarah
Silverman) and his daughter.
Kat and the stranger locked eyes as she
whispered, “Marry me.” After much coaxing from the audience and
stage crew, Charlie stumbled on stage and the ceremony began.
Even though this fairytale was sustained by sincerity, the question
remains: can they find common ground and true romance in this
marriage? If you sit through the rest of the movie, you’ll find out!
Jennifer Lopez, as always, is stunning in her outfits, singing, music,
movements, dancing, and her top of the line sky view condo. Owen
grew into his character and by the end of the movie became endearing.
A special scene was when Kat unexpectedly dropped by Charlie’s
math class and taught the class how to remember math formulas with
dance steps. Everyone got into the dance routine.
The music in “Marry Me” is quite catchy and viewers could be heard
clapping their hands and tapping their toes. If you’re looking for a
movie to watch with family, friends, or a lover, this is it.
I rate “Marry Me” a 3+ out of 5 and think you will too. Enjoy the
movie!
You Gotta Laugh
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
Top Ten Things I’m Good At
1. Forgetting someone’s name 30 seconds
after they tell me.
2. Running…Late, that is.
3. Making plans…the regretting making
plans.
4. Thinking of a great comeback…an hour later.
5. Digging through the trash for the food box I just tossed because I
already forgot the directions.
6. Adding items to online carts, then deleting.
7. Googling my ailments, then panicking.
8. Leaving laundry to wrinkle in the dryer.
9. Forgetting why I walked into the room.
10. Calculating how much sleep I’ll get if I can just “fall asleep right
now.”
My Philosophy
1. I’ve reached the age where my train of thought often leaves the
station without me.
2. The truth always comes out as the Tequila goes in.
3. You never realize how anti-social you are until there is a pandemic
and your life doesn’t really change that much.
4. As you get older, you’ve got to stay positive. For example, the other
day I fell down the stairs. Instead of getting upset, I just thought, “Wow,
that’s the fastest I’ve moved in years!”
5. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that pleasing everyone is
impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.
6. Exercise makes you look better naked. So does wine of your choice.
7. I enjoy a glass of wine each night for its health benefits. The other
glasses are for my witty comeback’s and flawless dance moves!
8. It’s strange how drinking eight glasses of water a day seems
impossible. But 8 cups of coffee goes down like a chubby kid on a seesaw!
9. I have put a lot of thought into it, and I just don’t think being an
adult is gonna work for me!
And finally: A truck loaded with Vicks Vapor Rub overturned on
the I-15 last month. Amazingly there was no congestion for eight hours.
Bill Caserta is the Executive Director of The Vegas Voice and is the
long lost (but now found) Bronx brother of the publisher. He is
also a proud resident of Carnegie Heights at Henderson (see next
page).

Peace & Quiet
By: Liz Breier / This & That
My friend back recently retired. She was
lamenting that while she does not want to
be alone and feels she will miss the comradery of
fellow employees, she is curious to see what the
next phase of her life will be.
This friend is alone with her beloved pooch companion and is
nervous about the solitude. I reminded her of our youth together,
friends, parties, parents, school, then college, jobs, careers. And she did
have a sibling and now a nephew with children she adores visiting.
All that noise for so many years. I suggested she just turn off the TV,
radio and even her cell phone and sit quietly with Ollie (her pup) by
her side and enjoy the tranquility.
We get so used to being entertained and talked to and volume coming
at us from every direction, it’s nice to enjoy the silence sometimes. She
agreed that it was relaxing.
8
April 2022
To substantiate the point of how we are so addicted to noise, I looked
around at the gym recently and noticed just about everyone had
headphones, earphones or a cell phone to their ears or some device to
be entertained while they workout. One individual does his workout
while watching movies on his iPad.
I confess – I have listened to my earbuds at the gym too, although I
often prefer an audio book. I tried having a go at it without the audio
distraction and it was very enjoyable to be able to concentrate on my
exercises.
On my walks around the neighborhood, I would take the offending
earbuds but when I walked without the noise, I noticed more of the
nature around me.
Somehow, over a lifetime we have become addicted to noise. How
many of us leave a television or radio (or Alexa) on while doing things
at home, just to have the “company”? Is it necessary?
Thanks to my old friend for helping to remind me that silence can be
“golden.” It’s nice to sit quietly in our “golden” years and enjoy peace
and quiet after a lifetime of music, talking, and lots of noise.
Congratulations on your retirement Ellen!
Beware - It’s Still Possible!
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
With so many new seniors relocating to Las
Vegas and Henderson from all over the
United States, we have, once again, been asked to
present the award-winning documentary, The Guardians. Publisher
Dan and I were honored to participate in the film.
We were also asked to resume our seminars on how to avoid the
guardianship trap. So far this year we have given three seminars
(see photo from last
month’s presentation
at Carnegie Heights
at Henderson) and
have committed to do
several more over the
next few months. Our
presentations will be
in Summerlin as well
as in Henderson.
It appears that
some of the people
who worked so hard
on the guardianship issue a few years ago have moved on to other
projects and issues. They all “assumed” that the reform laws we all
worked so hard to pass have solved the problems.
Sadly, that is not the case. Nevada has (thankfully) far fewer private
guardians than in the past. The Clark County Public Guardian however
is now taking those cases, so the problems are still there.
A call placed to Legal Aid of Southern Nevada was answered by a
receptionist that told us they are no longer handling guardianship
cases. I found that hard to believe.
Could it really be true, especially after all the work former Nevada
Assembly Speaker, Barbara Buckley, (who is the head honcho there)
put into guardianship reform?
For those of you
that have not yet
filed a Guardianship
Nomination Form
with the Secretary of
State, you can find it
on our Vegas Voice
(www.thevegasvoice.
net) website. Click
the tab at the top that
says “Guardianship.”
To date, the
Secretary’s office
tells us more than
4,000 have been filed. Why not let yours be added to that list? For more
information on the form and more importantly what it does for you,
feel free to contact me: Rana@thevegasvoice.net.
One last thing: I would also like to remind you not to be too quick
to sign any documents without having an attorney or someone
with “no dog in the fight” that you can trust look it over.
As infuriating as it might be to know that we seniors are very often
too trusting (and sometimes too gullible) we unfortunately make an
easy mark for someone waiting to take advantage of us.
Please never, never, NEVER let anyone rush you to sign on the dotted
line for ANYTHING!
Guardianship Presentation
At the invitation of Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman,
The Vegas Voice held a Guardianship Update seminar last month at
the Sahara Library. Led by Any Content Editor (ACE) Rana Goodman
& publisher Dan Roberts, discussions included the guardianship
reforms accomplished, the “how & why” of the Nevada Guardianship
Nomination Form and Rana’s new project, “Concerned Neighbors &
Friends Program.”
Pictured with Rana prior to the presentation is host Councilwoman
Victoria Seaman
Friends and
Concerned
Neighbors...
We have received a number of calls from concerned
readers asking “what can they do?” when they see a
neighbor “disappear.”You can call Rana at The Vegas
Voice and she will take the info and serve as liason
with authorities! More Info? Call today
Very Special Entertainment This Month
By: Evan Davis / Entertainment Editor
April is turning out to be one powerhouse
of a month. Besides all the regular weekly
shows, there are “one & done” gigs going on
every week.
There’s the 22 nd Annual Vocal Jazz Solo Night on
April 2 nd at the Jay Morrison Hall. Gatsby’s at Gambit
in Henderson features The Uli Geissendoerfer Trio with
special guest singers on the weekends.
On April 10 th at the Sahara Library the Pentagogical
Brass will be performing at 3 pm. Myron’s at the Smith
Center will host a night of Romance and Fun with Giada
Valenti on the 20th.
There’s different entertainment in the afternoon and
evenings at The Golden Tiki in China Town on the weekends. You can
find Blues at Saddle and Spurs Saloon along with a little country at
Skyline Casino or Gilley’s.
You’ll find different shows every week at Starbright Theatre or
matinees at the Clark County Library. On April 7 th Grammy-nominated
drummer Jeff Hamilton brings his trio to Myron’s at the Smith Center
along with guest vocalist Laura Shaffer. Check out the Crooners, Inc. at
The Mint Tavern on Sahara April 20 th .
How about a Drag Brunch on April 17 th or The World Series of Comedy
April 26-28 at Notoriety downtown? Comedy Magic & Mentalism
in “Totally Mental” or Vegas Country Nights with Chase Brown or
Faaabulous The Show.
Then there is An-Alt Comedy Variety Show called Viral Live with Sarah
Hester Ross. All this takes place downtown at Notoriety.
Let’s not forget the on-going shows at the Piazza
Lounge at the Tuscany Hotel, the Cigar Bar in
Summerlin, Wednesday through Sunday entertainment
at the Italian American Club or enjoyment at Lake Las
Vegas.
And best of all, The Vegas Voice has a show
that’s a tribute to Nat King Cole and Barbra
Streisand featuring Ronnie Rose and Elisa
Fiorillo. That all happens at Sun City MacDonald
Ranch on Saturday April 23 rd at 7 pm.
Plus, I start our Vegas Voice “Fabulous Fridays”
luncheon and variety/talk show with my co-host Jonny Bird
(see photo) and special guest performers. That’s also at
MacDonald Ranch on Friday April 8 th at noon.
Get out in April while the temperature is cool, and the entertainment
is Hot!
The Show of the Year
Entertainment
editor Evan Davis
with Tony Arias
as he autographs
the show poster
before his
performance last
month at Sun
City MacDonald
Ranch. Without
any doubt, Tony’s
Vegas Nights
joined by the
Michael Dubay
Trio was beyond
wonderful and
spectacular!
For those of you who were there, you know what we are saying. For
those that missed it, our only question is “Why? You don’t like fantastic
shows?”
As faithful reader Suzy S. emailed Publisher Dan: This is what I
think about your show tonight.
Why don’t I buy tickets for the rest of the year now? Love
your shows. What else is there to say?

Buddy, Bopper & Richie
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Three high energy singers realized every
performer’s fears when they burst onto the
South Point stage to a nearly empty showroom
the last days of 2020’s winter. Fortunately for
Ray Anthony, John Mueller and Linwood Sasser,
the blinding stage lights prevented them from
spotting the sparsely populated room.
The hollow sound of barely 50% capacity
reverberated with an echoing applause. The
first sign of COVID fear had begun sweeping the
country.
Just hours later, staff ushered guests from the
popular local’s casino, locking the doors to the public for the next three
months. “We had gigs coming up,” Sasser recalled, “but they started
getting cancelled.”
The expected hiccup in their performance schedule lasted 18
grueling months.
Anthony reflected on that closing night. “Rumblings were going on.
Are we going on stage or not? If I’m not working, I’m not paying the
bills.”
For Anthony, Mueller and Sasser who perform as Ritchie Valens,
Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper respectively, their first concerns were
getting home. Fortunately, state lines had not been closed. With venues
forced to shutter, Anthony retreated to Missouri; Mueller and Sasser
headed to California to await their return to their home on the stage.
The trio triumphantly returned to South
Point last October and any memory of COVID
mandated ambient music was blown out of the
water when Sasser’s Big Bopper exploded onto
the stage and rocked the house with the 1959
hit “White Lightning.” Their tribute to the three
legends who perished together in a 1959 plane
crash returns to the South Point April 22-24.
Sasser, who had weathered the threat of
several California wildfires and recurring power
shutdowns, packed up and headed back home, relocating to Florida
where he had appeared as Oliver Hardy, “Joliet” Jake Blues and WC
Fields at local theme parks and events. Sasser originally auditioned for
the Dance Party in 2013.
“You show up with a crewcut and a leopard jacket and you pretty
much had it made.” He replaced Jay Richardson in the show, the son
of the Big Bopper.
Anthony, a Las Vegas veteran of 15 years in Legends in Concert,
credits the group’s fans for helping him keep his spirits upbeat. One fan
drove over 1,000 miles to deliver a $1,000 check as a birthday gift. “It
really touched me to know that people cared,” Anthony shared.
The group’s founder, Mueller, who performs as Buddy Holly, headed
back to his studio and his musical roots. “I always go back to 50s and
60s music. That’s what’s in my soul.”
The audiences have returned in the poodle skirts, Marlboros rolled
up in the t-shirt sleeves and they’re ready to rock to Chantilly Lace, Oh
Donna, and Peggy Sue.
“We see people smile when they leave. We know we’ve done our job,”
said Sasser. Reflecting on the downtime, he said, “We got a taste of
retirement, and we didn’t like it.
Wagon Train
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
thought I’d write this month about a
I wonderful actor I had the pleasure of working
with in 1958!
He played Trail Master Major Seth Adams on a
well-received series called Wagon Train which ran
for 8 seasons. Yes, I’m talking about Ward Bond.
The episode I’m referring to was “The Tobias
Jones Story.” I played an orphan and it was one of
my favorite roles.
On our last day of filming he gave me this photo
with that inscription. I have it proudly displayed in
my office and I am so honored to have it as it means
the world to me.
Ward Bond will also be remembered from such
films as It’s a Wonderful Life, The Maltese Falcon
and Gone with The Wind, to name a few.
He had a reputation of being an arrogant man of little tact, but I can
tell you from my experience, that underneath his tough, rather gruff
demeanor, he was a big Teddy Bear. He was what you’d call a “man’s
man.”
He also had a habit of swearing endlessly, without (I believe) even
realizing it. And because I was a minor, there was a welfare worker on
the set sent by the Los Angeles Board of Education.
I was required to have 3 hours of schooling on the set and she was
basically there to look out for my welfare, meaning - those hours
schooling, no overtime, one hour lunch, etc.
At one point, she went to the director and said if he
used one more word of profanity, she would pull me
from the set. The welfare worker had the authority
to do just that, which (of course) would have held
up production.
To his credit, Ward apologized profusely. He never
even said “darn” after that!
He played football with John Wayne at USC in
1926 and remained lifelong friends. Wayne also did
the eulogy at his funeral. Ward died at the young
age of 57.
I feel blessed to have known him.
Until next time, remember - It’s hard to be happy when we refuse to
let go of the things that make us sad.
Unexpected Guests?
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
love to entertain, I love having parties and
I I also love informal gatherings. That’s a lot
of love, but bringing people together and feeding
them makes me happy.
I often have unexpected guests so these are items that are always in
my pantry and freezer - and you might want them in yours.
In the pantry, you’ll always find pasta and chopped clams. Unexpected
guests can drop in at dinnertime and linguine with clam sauce will be
on the menu.
The freezer always holds Italian bread for a crusty garlic loaf. And,
since the refrigerator holds parmesan cheese, you have a quick,
delicious dinner.
No greens, you say? Oh, please! They came unannounced and you’re
feeding them - they’ll be grateful you’re cooking.
By the way, cacio e pepe pasta (Parmesan cheese and black pepper) is
another great quick dish, and you’ll have all the ingredients!
In my
refrigerator,
you’ll always
find eggs
and assorted
veggies. Don’t
want pasta, how
about a frittata?
Eggs and
sauteed onions
make a delicious
dish with hot
crusty bread.
For lunch, those eggs make a tasty egg salad, using Italian bread
as crostini. Cacio e pepe scrambled eggs are also a delicious breakfast
item. Keeping an inventory of dried herbs will flavor any dish.
If you’re a dessert lover, the freezer is our friend, but you’re on your
own there.
I subscribe to the Boy Scout motto “Be Prepared.” If you do as well,
unexpected guests will be fun.
Try this recipe, I think you’ll enjoy it.
Cacio e Pepe Pasta
In generously salted water, boil 16 oz spaghetti until al dente. Drain
pasta, saving about 2 cups of cooking liquid. In the meantime, melt 3
tbs. butter and 3 tbs. extra virgin olive oil until foamy. Add 1 tbs. course
freshly ground pepper and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute.
Add pasta and about 3/4 cup of cooking liquid, tossing to coat. Add
1-3/4 cups Parmesan and continue to cook, tossing until cheese is
melted and pasta is well coated, about 2 minutes.
Add more cooking liquid if needed. Add additional Parmesan and
pepper to suit your specific taste. Season with salt if necessary.
Legendary Divas at the
Tropicana
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
There’s a reason why Legends in Concert at
the Tropicana is the longest running show
on the Las Vegas strip – quality. The show is pure
entertainment.
It features a full band plus six dancers and two background singers.
The costumes and choreography are top notch.
If you are a fan of Celine, Adele, Cher, or Lady Gaga, then you have
come to the right place. You don’t have to break into your savings for
tickets to see incredibly talented ladies perform.
No lip syncing here. They look and sound like the real thing And
they don’t cancel their shows at the last minute. (Adele!)
Frank Marino, a Vegas tradition, is back as host doing his Joan Rivers
schtick. He has added some fresh material. As in the past, he tells the
audience that since he spends two hours plus putting on makeup, they
should take pictures.
His wardrobe? “Armani”, he tells us, “Salvation Armani.”
Tiemey Allen, a tribute artist since 2009, leads off with her spot-on
imitation of Lady Gaga. She is an accomplished musician and played
the piano during her set.
Adele is portrayed by Janae Longo. She has had a 20 year career
in music. Janae performed “Someone Like You” and Rolling in the
Deep” among others. She was backed by the accomplished dancers and
background singers.
Lisa McClowry paid homage to Cher. She has over 30 years of show
business experience as a singer/entertainer. Her rendition of “If I Could
Turn Back Time” is a showstopper. She looks and acts like Cher.
Elisa Furr wowed the audience with her tribute to Celine Dion. She
began her vocal career at age 14 and has toured extensively. Elisa is
known to be one of the best Celine tribute artists in the world.
I have seen Legends in Concert numerous times and have always
enjoyed the productions. The Divas continue the tradition of excellence.
Legends performs at 7:30 pm Wednesdays - Mondays at The
Tropicana. Tickets are available on line or through the Trop box office.
Dianne Davis is delighted to once again share her opinions of
local performers and shows. She is the lead reporter for SCA-TV
The Colors of Life
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
love flowers, but I’ve never been much of a
I gardener.
When they handed out green thumbs, someone
else must have gotten mine. Hubby, who was never big on mowing the
lawn, did have a rose garden in just about every
house we lived in.
One year, he decided to have all white roses in
his garden. They were incredibly beautiful when
they bloomed.
The whole family enjoyed them, even the kids.
At 4, 6, and 8 years of age, our little troop of
gardeners often hung out with their dad when he
puttered in his rose garden.
“Here, take these to mom,” he’d say, as he
carefully chose three exceptionally beautiful white roses, ready to be
picked and enjoyed in the house. Three ragamuffins, with dirt smeared
on their faces and hands, would tramp through the family room into
the kitchen and proudly present me with the flowers.
One day the ragamuffins charged into the house empty handed, but
very excited. “Mon, “cried Dina, “You have to come and see Dad’s roses!
There’s a black rose on one of the white rose bushes!”
I stopped peeling the dinner potatoes. “Really?” “Yeah! Come and
see!” Three little heads bobbed up and down with excitement.
I rinsed my hands off and followed them out to the garden. Hubby
was standing in front of a white rose bush, shaking his head in disbelief,
staring at a gorgeous black rose in the middle of all the other white
roses.
My mouth dropped open in astonishment.
“That’s amazing!” I exclaimed. “We have to take
pictures and call the horticulture society. This is
phenomenal.”
Hubby looked up and began to grin. The kids
started giggling, and jumping up and down.
I squinted at everyone, then turned to Donnie.
“You didn’t?”
“I did,” he admitted, shaking a can of black
spray paint hidden behind his back. “Isn’t it beautiful?” “Yes,” I smiled.
“But I owe you one!”
An hour later, his grin intact, he handed me a bouquet of white roses,
the shiny black rose in the middle. “A peace offering,” he said.
Through being isolated to avoid COVID,
many of us have
spent our days sitting
in a chair, or recliner - or even remaining in
bed longer than necessary.
Hear ye! When your buttocks and thighs
are uncomfortable and feel as if the skin
is scraped it’s an early indication you are
developing bed sores. They are ulcers that
break into a red oozing condition, are
extremely painful and slow to heal.
Occasionally they pick up bacteria from
underwear or trousers and blood poisoning
(sepsis) arises. If neglected they could become so severe you’d need a
24/7 helper to turn you while in bed every few hours at home, or to
enter an assisted living facility.
Should you already have open wounds on the lower body and possibly
around the heels of your feet or elbows, it’s imperative you contact your
VET2VET: Anna, can you recall the moment
you decided to join the Navy?
Anna Clark: At a High School Career’s Day I
visited two ND Universities, but tuition was out of
there, I overheard a Navy recruiter talking to a
group of students.
His words were my invitation, “So, if you need a
If skin is uncomfortable but intact, a RN told me you can probably
forestall a major outbreak by implementing the following suggestions:
1. When using a wheelchair or recliner,
obtain a soft pillow containing feathers and
place it underneath you. Get up every 30
minutes, walk around, shake the pillow, and
sit again.
2. Search the internet (under various
brand names) for “pressure sore skin-shear
cream” (about $45) for soothing relief.
3. At night, lie on your side and be sure to
turn frequently in order to change positions.
4. Buy an “alternating pressure
My Mello Fello
By: Diane Rosen / Animal Magnetism
We have another dog
besides Angel Gal, our
kissy rescue who wrote my
column last month.
His name is Mello Fello and he’s a 16 year old West
Highland White Terrier.
We adopted Mello when we tragically lost our first
Westie to cancer at the age of 8. When Buster died, I
was devastated beyond words and had dreams about
him every night.
One night, I dreamed that we got another white
dog. In it, a little girl asked me my dog’s name, and
I answered “Marshmallow.” That’s how Mello got his
name. From a dream.
The name Mello Fello was wishful thinking. The
only other pup the breeder had at the time was named
Rowdy. That would have been a more appropriate
name for him.
Mello’s been far from mellow since he was a pup. He is one tough
cookie, and the complete opposite of his sister.
He isn’t a kissy dog. Never has been. Oh, maybe a lick on my hand
every now and again, but that’s usually when there’s peanut butter on
it from when I give him his meds.
He does, however, love to play. Mello and Angel played
so hard when we first brought her home, he blew out
his knee and had to have surgery. We set up the living
room as his recovery room and I slept next to him on
the floor every night.
Taking him out to do his business was a challenge
with a foot of snow on the ground. I’d shovel a place for
him to go, and would carry him to and from the spot.
At 16, Mello is deaf, nearly blind, has dementia, and
has horrible skin allergies. But he still loves his mama,
loves to play with squeaker toys, loves to eat, and wags
his tail whenever I’m near.
Having an old dog has its challenges and its rewards.
It’s sad to see them age, but the love only deepens.
As I always tell him, “Til death do us part, Mello
Fello, Mello Smello, Mello Yello. We will love you to the
very end.”
Our HowRU Program
I
By: Carol Chapman t’s no secret
that the
country is in a shift from 3 to 5G. AT&T,
Verizon and T-Mobile, will all change in 2022.
Seniors should pay heed to warnings put
out about preparing for the conversion or lose connectivity. Older
cell phones, some car navigation, emergency services, and home
security systems may be rendered useless on a 5G network.
Most alarming is that many medical devices like emergency alert
pendants might be useless without taking action. Fortunately, The
Foundation can help in this situation.
Our HowRU program is not dependent upon a 5G network. It is a
service in which an automatic call is made to a subscriber daily to
check on their welfare.
They answer the call, press the number 5, which indicates “I’m
okay,” and hang up. If the subscriber does not answer the first call,
another one is made two minutes later, and a third would be made if
the second is not answered.
If that call goes unanswered, HowRU team members call designated
emergency contacts which the subscriber has provided in advance.
If the designated contacts still cannot reach the subscriber, 311 is
the jar. The pebbles filled
up all the empty spaces
around the gold balls. He
then asked if the jar was
“yes.”
He then picked up a bag
the jar. The sand filled up
all the empty spaces. He
asked if the jar was, again,
full. They laughed and said
“yes.”
He then picked up two
cups of coffee and poured it into the jar. The coffee filled up the jar. He
asked the students if the jar was now full. They shouted “YES!”
He began to explain. “This jar represents your life. The golf balls are
the important things in your life. Family, friends, God, health. If all else
We know the program works because it has saved 11 lives!
HowRU is free and provides peace of mind to families who don’t
live near their loved one and also to anyone who lives alone. The
program lessens worries about taking a fall or becoming incapacitated
without being able to reach a phone.
To sign up, go to: FoundationAssistingSeniors.org/Programs or call
(725) 244-4200, and we’ll get you an application form. Or simply stop
at the office at 2518 Anthem Village Drive, Suite 102 in Henderson and
fill one out on the spot.
To complete the application, think about the ideal designated
emergency contacts for you —neighbors, friends, church contacts
and obtain their contact information. Don’t let 5G leave you without
a safety net.
was lost and you still had these, your life would be full.
“The pebbles are the things that matter like a job, house and car. The
sand is everything else. The small stuff.
“If you put the sand in the jar first, you would have no room for the
pebbles or golf balls. The same goes for life.
“If you spend all your
time and energy on the
small stuff, you will never
have time for the things
that are really important
to you.”
Take care of your golf
balls first. Play with your
children. Take time for
medical checkups. Take
your loved one out to
dinner. You will always
have time to clean the
house or run an errand.
One student asked what
the coffee represented? He
explained that it shows
that no matter how full
your life is, there’s always room for a couple cups of coffee with a friend.
Spring Cleaning for a
Cause
By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents”
April showers bring May flowers. And the
opportunity for spring cleaning. Again, I
am purging my closet, but this time for a specific charity.
When I first moved to Las Vegas, I had no sequins. Nada – zippo.
Okay, I just remembered my Elvis T-Shirt – and it’s one of my simple
treasures. But more on simple treasures next month.
While living here, and going to so many events and places, I acquired
a wardrobe of sequined shoes and purses and tops and dresses and my
favorite - jackets! And more on jackets another time.
I spent two weeks going through my sparkle closet – a separate closet
that contains everything dressy and formal, dresses long and short,
skirts, tops jackets, and shoes.
About the Eyebrows
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
There were so many things I didn’t
appreciate when I was young. My eyebrows
have now been added to that list. I just took them
for granted, like so many things
My eyebrows were always too thick, too dark and just did what they
were supposed to, framed my eyes. Now, they have needs.
At age 66, my eyebrows have thinned, grayed some, have wayward
strays, bald areas and dry patches. It’s time to take care of them.
My daughter recommended Revitabrow to help with the bald areas.
It is a serum/conditioner, sold by the company: Revitalash.com
It was expensive, $58.00 for a 2 month supply. So I bought the small
tube to try. My goal was hoping for new hair growth where it was
missing.
Using it was easy. After washing and drying the area, apply the serum,
let dry and fill in with eyebrow shadow.
After about 2 months, the bald areas started to fill back in. Honestly
I don’t know if it was the serum or because the thyroid meds I started
after the bout with cancer have started to work.
The only negative I noticed was my brow area was extra dry, requiring
a light exfoliation with a soft toothbrush. I also started using my under
eye cream on my brows at bedtime to help combat the dryness.
What will I wear again (or ever), what looks good on me and still
fits? Is it too big, too long, too tight?
Or what is too like another piece of clothing and if so which one to
keep? When the dust settled, I had 14 dresses of various lengths and
styles and colors. Dressy and cocktail to formal.
My realtor told me about an opportunity for giving called “Project
150.” Their mission statement is: “Project 150 strives to provide the
basic needs to the valley’s homeless, displaced and disadvantaged
high school students in the on-going struggle to make sure these kids
get their diploma and have a better chance at succeeding in life.”
But how do my dressy dresses and shoes help? By supplying these
deserving students with everything they need for their prom event! Now
that’s only my donation; they also accept donations for the boys as well.
And its focus is not only for prom, but they also collect high school
appropriate new and gently used clothes, shoes, toiletries, nonperishable
food, and school supplies year-round.
It thrilled me to help in this way instead of putting my clothes into a
consignment store. Project 150 Brady Caipa Volunteer Center, 3600 N
April 2022
I won’t buy a new tube unless I see the bald areas thinning again,
since those spots are better now.
Whoever would have guessed after years of doing nothing for my
eyebrows, they now need so many tools? Tweezers, small scissors, felt
eyeliner for grays, eyebrow brush, eyebrow shadow, exfoliation brush,
serum and moisturizer.
With age comes lots of changes and our health often affects how we
look. Staying healthy, eating right, and getting our check-ups is the
most important thing we can do.
Keeping up with little physical changes, even things like our eyebrows
can help us feel better even though it’s just cosmetic. When you feel
good, you smile more and a happy face is always more attractive than
all the make-up in the world can achieve.
Got Your Estate in Order?
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
Have you set up your family’s living trust yet?
(or kept up-to-date the one you have?)
These days, most homeowners are getting a
Living Trust and rightly so, because the Living Trust is the preferred
estate planning vehicle. But few are asking, “Exactly what kind of Trust
vehicle am I getting?”
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a matter of a few days or months. But when will you know
whether your Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled
entering a skilled nursing facility/memory care facility or pass away,
exactly when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work.
And then it’s too late to fix it! Only then do you find out if you had
a good one.
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is: All Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out.
Learn why your Living Trust plan must be set up and maintained
properly or it may not avoid the expenses, delays and headaches of
Probate Court after you’ve gone - or even while you’re living!
Learn why many Living Trust plans may prevent you from qualifying
for assisted living benefits and allow your estate to be wiped out by
nursing home bills or the high costs of a memory care facility!
Do you know that if you’re married, the wrong type of Trust/Will
can force your surviving spouse to needlessly lose half your community
property? And the shame of it is that it could have been protected from
creditors, or the government.
A Living Trust that merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good
enough anymore!
It’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the ever changing
world and needs of your loved ones - after you’re gone! (such as
unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems!)
Check the seminar flyer below and make your reservation
right away.
Don’t risk all you’ve worked your entire lifetime to earn and save.
A properly drafted and maintained Living Trust is critical to you and
your loved ones’ well-being. Be informed, rather than wait until it’s too
late!
Bring Back the Good Old Woods
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
So, there I was, 8:30 am, indulging in my
guilty pleasures – a second cup of coffee
and my second crossword puzzle. As I filled in 13
Across – a four-letter word expressing sorrow, I
had a thought. Now there’s a fine word. Why does
no-one say ‘alas’ anymore?
I know that language isn’t static, and words seem
to have an inherent expiration date. They can be
cool for a while, then drop out of favor, and new ones
take their place.
But getting back to my puzzle, there are many
lovely words such as hie or thither, that have been
saved from the vocabulary graveyard by the sheer
fortune of becoming a response to a crossword clue!
I’m not suggesting we reach way back, like, let’s say, biblical
pronouns or all those “begats.” But methinks, perhaps, it’s not too
far reaching to dip into another century or two for some good oldfashioned
linguistic flavor.
Help me make “alas” the new “Oy vey.” To kick off my campaign, I
offer a brief list of words that I believe deserve a second chance.
EEK! A wonderful and succinct expression of alarm, fear, or surprise
that’s too much fun to be confined to cartoons or comic strips. Example:
EEK, it’s time for my colonoscopy again!
SCORE. No, not the result of a sports competition, but another word
for “twenty,” derived from counting sheep and making a mark when
the number was reached. Probably not in use since Abraham Lincoln,
I would like it reintroduced starting immediately. Example: When my
next big birthday comes due, I shall be Four Score.
EVENTIDE. A melodic word that means “end of
the day.” Example: It’s eventide somewhere; let’s
go have a drink!
EGAD. Don’t you just love “egad?” Say it
aloud. It’s an exclamation of surprise or anger. So
expressive. Example: Egad! It’s 7 am and I’ve run
out of coffee!
TRUMPERY. Things that look good but are
basically worthless. (I said THINGS, not PEOPLE!)
Example: I know for a fact that she shops at the
flea market, so her designer handbag collection is mere trumpery.
GADZOOKS. Another word you will love to say. Just try it. And worth
a lot of Scrabble points. It is an exclamation of surprise or indignation.
Example: Gadzooks! My scale says I’ve gained the Quarantine 15!
ZOUNDS. An alternative to Gadzooks! Make up your own example.
PIFFLE. Say it fast four times. Feels good, doesn’t it? It means trivial
nonsense. Example: Last night on Zoom my friends and I played Piffle
Pursuit and I won!
HUMBUG. Made popular by Scrooge, this little-used word means
false or deceptive. Example: The fashion model’s lush eyelashes were
definitely humbug.
This is by no means a complete list. It’s meant to kick-start a trend.
And please, feel free to add some old words of your own.
And just so I know you are truly with me in this endeavor, next time
you send me a text, be sure to include at least one flapdoodle!
On April 9 th , Neptune and Jupiter will align
at 23 degrees of Pisces. Jupiter and Neptune
meet up every 12.5 years, however, March 17,
1856, was the last time these planets aligned together in Pisces, making
this a rare conjunction!
This is just one of many repetitions that occur between planets
with regularity. These alignments are significant and suggest major
developments on a personal and national level.
Jupiter and Neptune have a mutual connection to Pisces, kind of like
BFFs. Since both planets feel at home in this location, they perform
better.
To understand the possibilities
of this alignment, let’s explore
the meaning behind the planets.
Jupiter, the traditional ruler of
Pisces, represents expansion,
opportunities, travel, and lucky
breaks, while Neptune, the
modern ruler of Pisces, represents dreams, spirituality, drugs, deception,
fantasies, and bodies of water.
When together, this trio suggests a heightened sense of romance,
creativity, and spirituality with magical outcomes in the air.
Although we will all experience this, if you were born on or around
March14 th , September 16 th , June 14 th , or December 15 th this aspect is
activating you Sun. If you know your chart, check to see if you have any
personal planets at 23 degrees of Pisces, Virgo, Gemini, or Sagittarius.
From a worldly standpoint, this line up suggests an amazing year for
the arts and media with focus on laser lights and breakthroughs with
virtual reality. We should hear more stories related to marine life, oil,
oceans, flooding, and water and plastic awareness.
Neptune rules drugs so expect to see pharmaceutical breakthroughs
(maybe Mark Cuban’s low-cost pharmacy?), advances in therapies and
more talk or legalization of drugs such as mushrooms.
Lastly, Pisces rules the unconscious, suggesting the collective waking
up to unfathomable ideas about space, aliens, or intelligences beyond
the veil.
Although the conjunction happens on April 9 th , we will continue to
feel these themes throughout 2022. To learn more about the upcoming
Neptune- Jupiter alignment, tune in to Season 3, Episode 6 of the Mom
and Me Astrology Podcast.
The Great Alignment of
Jupiter & Neptune
April 2022
ncounters with creatures from outer space
Eare not really of modern origin. When
reading (unbiased) Ezequiel, chapter one, in
the Old Testament, one can easily conclude that Ezequiel saw strangelooking
creatures with four wings from outer space.
Except for Earth, there’s been no evidence of life inhabiting any
planets in our galaxy. Yet, the inexplicable signs aliens have been
leaving, (cave drawings, odd monuments, crop circles, ley lines,
pyramids, etc.) have been grossly ignored or misinterpreted due to
denial, scientific and religious bias.
However, setting
aside these tendencies
would no longer
support the fact that
we are alone in the
universe.
ETs Among Us?
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
Science needed
to establish this
intelligent design’s
mechanism and
prove its existence.
We see beliefs
changing as more
pioneering researchers, astronomers, archeologists, psychologists,
and anthropologists uncover evidence of earth’s extraterrestrial (ET)
visitations.
These days, plenty of reliable witnesses exist, including ex-President
Jimmy Carter. He swore never to ridicule anyone who professes to have
seen a UFO after he and some friends encountered one in Oklahoma.
And the IMDb documentary, ET’s Among Us; UFO Witnesses and
Whistleblowers, exposes political motivations for the government’s
cover-up of UFO phenomena; underground bases, reverse engineering
of crashed UFOs, NASA’s shocking evidence of intelligent alien life, and
a history of an ongoing alien presence on Earth.
Researcher John Stokes (2020) wrote, “Non-coding DNA sequences
are common to all living organisms.” “They constitute a larger part of
the total genome in human DNA” says Professor Sam Chang,
Human Genome Project. HGP researchers believe that 97% of
the non-coding sequences in human DNA is the genetic code of
extraterrestrial life forms.
Even more importantly, they are finding tangible proof that we are
all leaping through an energetic shift at this time. Evidence shows this
dynamic evolution directly affects all levels of consciousness and even
the structure and function of our DNA.
The good news: The idea that nothing short of Divine Intervention
could help us is perhaps precisely the point. Our very existence here is
a Divine Intervention in the first place, and we will continue to enjoy
that protection as we evolve and move forward.
Heading for the National Championship
By: Liz Palmer / NSG
There’s a lot of excitement starting to build
at the world headquarters (OK, the tiny
little offices) of the Nevada Senior Games. That’s
because we are getting ready to celebrate our Nevada athletes who are
headed to Fort Lauderdale to compete in the National Senior Games
Association national championship competitions May 10-23, 2022!
We have close to 100 athletes who are headed to Florida and they’re
ready to represent the Silver State with athletic skill and sportsmanship.
There are 25 different individual and team sports to be contested at the
national level, and the best senior athletes from our state are ready to
mix it up with representatives from other states.
The Celebration of Athletes ceremony is May 16 th , and a much-loved
tradition is the Parade of States with athletes from each state marching
in groups lead by two leaders – one holding their state flag and one
carrying the sign with the name of their state.
We’ve chosen our two athletes to lead the rest of our group: Nedra
Paschal from Henderson was our Games Director for many years and
is now a member of the Nevada Senior Games Board of Directors. She
is competing in tennis doubles and mixed doubles, and badminton
doubles, mixed doubles, and singles.
This will be her 13 th national competition and she has decided that
this will also be her final trip to the national championships. What
better way to thank her for
her years of service and
participation in the
Senior Games
movement
than to have
her help lead
our Nevada
athletes.
The second
athlete who will lead our
team is Robert Qualls from Reno. Robert is a Professor Emeritus in the
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the
University of Nevada Reno.
He’s also an outstanding athlete who has qualified in the 5K and 10K
road races and the 800 meter and 1500 meter track events. He’s been a
multi-year participant in the Nevada Senior Games and at the National
Senior Games.
We wish all of our athletes the very best of luck in their endeavors
and we hope that our Silver State representatives bring home medals in
not just silver, but also gold and bronze!
Liz Palmer is the Executive Director of the Nevada Senior Games.
Business Portraits
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
Have you ever noticed the business profile
pictures in magazines,
cards and presentations? Why
do over half of them show the subject standing at a
slight tilt, fake smile and arms crossed?
So I looked it up to find the meaning of such
a stance and I resolved never to have my picture
taken that way. If what I read is true, it means I’m
a psychological mess.
Experts say that you are feeling anxious, tense,
insecure, fearful or responding to distress. Aren’t
we supposed to show a happy, confident image
when representing our business?
Going on… crossing your arms creates a barrier
between them and someone they don’t like. I think
I’m supposed to look friendly and ready to work.
I don’t suggest opening my arms like I’m about
to give you a hug but I’m sure there’s a middle
ground.
Since the meaning seems universal, why do photographers use it as
their “go to” pose? Maybe they don’t like their subjects?
Now we move on to glamour shots. I have rarely seen a business
associate sit in a meeting wearing a gold sparkly hat and feathers.
Dripping in jewelry was pretty common in the
old days and now it’s jeans and a ball cap. I kind
of like that.
Sometimes people pose with their dogs which
probably means they don’t want to do business
with anyone who has cats. It’s a subtle “don’t call
me” message.
Let’s talk hair. Short, long, up, down, windblown
and slicked. Sometimes you can tell a person’s age
by the hairstyle even after a face lift. And in some
instances, it’s pretty obvious when the picture is 20
years old. (I think I covered that when I wrote
about online dating LOL)
So now I come to my pictures. I try to smile, only
use head shots, wear make-up and do my best.
Then you might see me in the market and I’m in
a ponytail, no make-up and cranky because the
supermarket keeps changing everything around.
My solution has been to work at home, so no one can actually see me.
Adrea likes to opine and find the lighter side of life as a senior.
Do You Sometimes Feel Off-Balance?
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Balance - and I don’t mean it the way you
think! Yes,
we need balance in
our lives, and we start losing our sense of
balance in our middle ages.
If we don’t do any balance exercises,
we can lose our balance in our aging
selves and take falls. Have you ever taken
a fall? Older adults 60 or older who have
not done any balance exercises have a
greater risk of falling.
Make it a habit to do some balance
exercises at least 3-4 times a week. Some
easy exercises is to stand at a counter
or a steady chair. With both feet about
shoulder width, lift one foot forward at
least one inch and hold as long as you
can - 10 seconds or more.
Bring that foot down and then shift to the other foot. You can also try
this by bending the knee and bringing the foot backward (similar to a
flamingo stance). Try holding this for as long as you can - 10 seconds
or more.
Repeat for the other foot. Eventually you should be able to do it
without any added object.
Another exercise is to stand behind a
chair and start by holding the chair with
both hands for support. To challenge
yourself further, try holding the chair
with one hand only.
As you feel steady, try using one finger
to balance you. Then try balancing
without holding on. When you are
steady on your feet, try doing the
exercises with your eyes closed.
With a little more balance exercises
each day, you can help strengthening
your core to help prevent falls. The more
you do balance exercises, the less chance
of injuring yourself.
Challenge and enjoy!
Safe Driving &
Insurance Rates Part II
By: Jim Valkenburg / Insurance Insight
previously wrote about how auto premiums
I could be reduced simply by reducing
claims that insurance companies pay. My first
installment dealt with Distracted Driving and my advice was to Pay
Attention.
Here’s another: Texting & Driving. This takes distracted driving to
the upper limit.
Something to contemplate: If you are traveling at 55 MPH, in just
the 5 seconds it takes to send or read a short text message, you have
already zoomed past the length of a football field! Would you want a
family member or friend to be on the road with someone so oblivious
to the traffic around them?
A majority of States have passed
laws with penalties for texting
while driving that include hefty
fines, license suspension, and
even prison time. But the rate
of accidents caused by texting
continues to increase.
Is sending a text worth the financial burden? Is it worth
risking your freedom? Is it worth the emotional damage an
auto accident causes to everyone involved? Is it worth a life?
In today’s world a person may verbalize a text rather than using the
keypad. Does that make it safer? Statistics say no. The simple act of
verbalizing a text or even talking on a cell phone while driving is a
dangerous distraction.
Blue Tooth technology and hands-free cell phone use has made the
practice so common that many barely consider it a problem. And yet,
the accidents caused by cell phone use continue to rise every year.
A few statistics:
1. The National Safety Council reports cell phone use while driving
leads to 1.6 million crashes every year.
2. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur yearly from accidents caused by
texting while driving.
3. Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident
than driving drunk.
4. Per an AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of
texting while driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway.
5. 21% of drivers involved in fatal accidents were distracted by
their cell phones.
The statistics are staggering. Are we really that apathetic about our
safety and the safety of others?
Apparently so. Do you drive regularly? My advice PAY ATTENTION.
Sound familiar?
Dealing With Gas Pain
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
It’s only natural that the older we get, the
more aches and pains we learn to live with.
Unfortunately, the latest pain we have is the
screaming from our wallets every time we fill up at the gas station.
This is a pain we can’t control. It may go away at some point in the
future, but we can’t predict when. To help ease your suffering a bit,
we’d like to offer a few tips to help improve your vehicle’s overall fuel
efficiency.
We aren’t talking 10 mpg, but even the smallest changes can help.
1. Think about how you drive. Do you speed away from the green
light? Do you accelerate until you have to brake?
The smoother you drive, the more fuel you’ll save. Experts say
between 5-10 percent. Driving smoothly means your wallet will thank
you, and so will your passengers.
2. Do you idle while waiting for your spouse at the supermarket?
Obviously, when it’s 115 degrees outside you need to run the air
conditioner, but the more you idle, the more incremental fuel you use,
as well as add emission to the atmosphere.
So turn off the car and go inside. And don’t turn off the idle on/off
switch; it really does help.
3. Are your tires under inflated? It’s important to check your tire
pressure once a month. Even one psi under the recommended pressure
will affect your fuel efficiency.
In addition, keep your car maintained. The check engine light is
there for a reason. Don’t ignore it because it’s not a convenient time to
get it serviced.
4. While many cars warn to use “Premium Fuel Only,” the truth is
your vehicle will run just fine on regular gas. Premium fuel helps the
engine deliver the maximum horsepower, but the incremental losses
in power from running regular gas is virtually imperceptible to a nonprofessional
driver.
Adding a tank of Premium once every few months will be fine.
We can’t all drive EVs now, so these few simple tips should help
alleviate the pain at the pump.
Get a Grip!
By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action
Something quite nauseating is about to occur
again! Local municipal and state elections
featuring the same “political retreads” are soon
to aggravate your senses in the very near future.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for elections and the democratic
processes. It is clearly the American way.
My problem is that the same politicos keep rotating their insatiable
thirst for power in much the same ways as a player moves pawns on a
chess board. Once again, we have a soon to be former mayor running
for Lt. Governor, a former mayor elected to the County Commission
seeking re-election to the same seat, a Councilwoman trying to get
promoted to mayor, another Councilwoman seeking Secretary of State,
and nine time loser running for Congress (again).
Isn’t there any common sense from the voting public that we
are overdue for new faces with new ideas to move into the political
arena? Don’t give me the argument that those who have been in power
know the system and how to effectively operate within it. That’s garbage!
What’s even more repugnant - a statewide on-line news organization,
The Nevada Independent is going to arbitrarily determine “who is a
viable candidate” and eliminate any of those they consider “not credible
candidates” from their election coverage. That is pure censorship and
contradicts their mission statement that touts their “fairness and
transparency.”
There is nothing “fair” about excluding any candidate who files for
election to any office. It is their way of steering the election away from
any candidate they do not think is worthy of their time!
This is deplorable by any reasonable standard of common sense.
There is no excuse for attempting to justify this hypocrisy.
For all those who contributed to this news organization over the
years, from major corporations to the average citizen, you should be
demanding a refund and force them to cease their obviously biased
and unworthy business from continuing to operate. We deserve better!
A Quick Guide for Family
Caregiving
By: Pat Landaker / Positive Aging
Caregiving is hard work that challenges
the heart, mind, and body of both parties
involved. And these challenges are compounded
when it’s family giving and receiving the care.
The emotional investment becomes greater and the boundaries
drawn are often very gray. Clear communication between all family
members involved is key!
The number one issue in family caregiving is lack of communication
or poor communication. Communication must be open, simple
and deliver a clear understanding of what the patient wants and the
caregiver needs to deliver.
Guilt-free, respectful, mindful engagements make for great family
caregiver/patient communications and planning. Discussing a plan,
then putting it into writing will level the playing field and ties each
family member to a standard, method and expectation of care.
It’s also important to remember your family members have their own
lives to live and bills to pay. Caregiving can encumber the caregiver’s
wallet, so there’s nothing wrong with establishing a paid arrangement.
Despite, a family member’s willingness to offer free services,
sometimes it’s better to pay them. It adds mutual and personal respect
and value on both sides of the relationship.
If you have Medicaid, the Medicaid PCS program may pay your
caregiver. A simple search will offer plenty of information about paid
caregiving and pay scales for family caregiver services.
Topics to include when discussing a patient/caregiver relationship:
1. Scope of duty
2. Frequency of care/schedule
3. Type/level of care
4. Involvement of other care providers (home health nurse, physical
therapist, care manager)
5. Caregiver expectations
Tips for any caregiver are:
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Don’t allow yourself to be abused verbally, mentally or physically.
3. Step away if discussions get heated.
4. Accept help from other family members or friends.
5. Give yourself refresh breaks.
6. Respect your limitations. Don’t take on too much.
7. Hire outside services for cleaning, cooking, etc., if possible.
8. Spend time in a supportive setting when you feel overwhelmed.
Though you’re not a professional caregiver, you can use the many
online resources available to help you navigate your new role, but
always make sure your patient’s needs are first and foremost.
Fine Tuning the Body
By: Kyo Mitchell / A Healthier You
As a person gets older, the body works less and
less effectively. Many people will develop one
health problem after another.
One potential reason for this is the different systems and functions of
the body are interdependent. When one system or physiological process
begins to malfunction, it will also affect every other physiological
process downstream that depend on that original physiological process.
These secondary physiological processes which have now been
affected, will now affect further physiological processes. This domino
effect will continue until serious medical problems develop or until the
systems completely fail and the individual dies.
The further this process is allowed to progress, the more difficult it is
to bring the body’s systems back to a normal, healthy state of function.
The question then becomes, “Is there something an individual can do
to prevent these changes from happening?”
Before giving an explanation of how to do this, a principle needs
to be understood. Many times, individuals have the philosophy that
“more is better.”
That is not necessarily true when it comes to physiological functions.
Most physiological functions have to function within very tight
parameters to be healthy.
Too much or too little will affect this physiological function in a
negative way.
There are certain substances in nature that have an adaptogenic
effect. What this means is that the physiological processes that this
substance effects - if the process is functioning at too high a level, it will
be brought down to a healthy level and if it is too low it will bring that
physiological function up to a healthy level.
One example of this is the reishi mushroom also known Ganoderma
lucidum. If the immune system is not functioning as well as it should,
it will bolster the functioning of the immune system.
If the immune system is “over functioning” (Think autoimmune
disease), it may help to bring the level of function down to a
healthy level. Another example is ginseng which can regulate many
physiological processes.
Because these substances can interact with certain drugs, you should
consult your doctor before beginning to take them.
April Garden Tips
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
As April arrives, we now see our gardens
growing “full-time” producing an
abundance of leaves and flowers. We will
also observe the first stages of fruit and vegetable developing
in preparation for an abundant harvest later this year!
Keep in mind when planting any fruits and vegetables,
that they must have a location that provides at least 6-8
hours of daily sunlight for your harvest to mature and ripen.
So, plan before you plant!
April is ideal to add new additions to your garden since temperatures
are moderate and the sun is not intense. This permits plants to develop
strong growing systems needed to survive the hotter months ahead.
Ensure that your soil is properly aerated so that oxygen reaches the
roots and there is good water drainage. Check that you drip emitters
are strategically placed and functioning.
Set your irrigation schedules properly having your morning sessions
begin at 7:00 am so that water does not remain on your plantings
during the hottest time of the day. Droplets magnify the sun’s rays
causing leaf and flower burns!
Evening irrigation should take place at dusk to prevent surface
water from remaining on the ground at night. This will inhibit insect,
root rot, and fungus damage.
Fertilize your plants bi-weekly through mid-June. This will
encourage strong roots and leaf growth. It will also replenish soil
nutrients used up during plant growth.
Flowers, fruits and vegetables should be treated with a
high phosphorous level fertilizer, while green bushes should
be treated with high nitrogen level. Roses will also benefit
from treatments of Epsom Salt solutions (magnesium
sulfate) to encourage abundant flowering.
In addition, several treatments of bone meal will increase the
calcium levels in the soil helping cactus, yucca and agaves to grow.
Postpone fertilizing palms until mid-May since their roots do not
absorb nutrients until the temperature of soil reaches 70 F or above.
Excluding palms, stop fertilizing your landscape from Mid-June
until Labor Day. This will restrict new growth that can be sun/heat
damaged during the hottest summer months.
Travel Locally
By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures
As I write this, COVID infection rates are
falling all over the country. However, the
world political situation, (meaning the war in
Ukraine), is deteriorating. In light of these latest developments,
what then is the state of travel for Americans? Here’s my view.
Moving around the
United States is beginning
to return to pre-pandemic
levels. I can personally attest
that airplanes, no matter
where you go, are back to full
capacity. I’ve flown from New
York to Las Vegas and Los Angeles a few
times and there was not an empty seat.
“Road trips” by car are also approaching prepandemic
levels as well. And this is in light of
raising gas prices.
Even future cruise reservations are trending towards all-time highs.
Cruising in the near future, however, remains a bit low, as folks are
waiting for new modified vaccine and testing requirements to cruise.
I just returned from a Mexican Riviera cruise, and the ship sailed
at less than 50% capacity. It was wonderful - no crowds, no lines, and
plenty of deck chairs by the pool. It was one of the best cruises I’ve ever
been on.
European travel has been
affected by political events. It is
understandable that there is a
reluctance to visit Europe. It is
really a “wait and see” mentality
concerning European travel.
What should you do? I say,
“Get out there.” See the USA.
Perhaps Alaska, Canada or
New England - or anywhere
along the United States coasts.
Visit the National Parks or do a
Mississippi River cruise.
It is time to put the pandemic behind us. But, as I always
say, travel smart. Don’t leave your brain at home when you go on
vacation and do your research before you go.
Please don’t hesitate to call me at 516/485-3200 with any question
you might have. Happy and safe adventures to all.
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed
a bill setting aside more than two-million
acres as America’s
first national park – Yellowstone.
Yellowstone National Park is planning
its 2022 Sesquicentennial with new
focus and signage illuminating the story
of Native American tribes with historic
connections to the land. Thousands of
years ago, Yellowstone’s roads and trails
were Native American trails.
More than 11,000 years ago, Native
Americans inhabited this land. When
the park was established however, Native
Americans were driven out. The public
was led to believe Native Americans never occupied the area.
The earliest people in Yellowstone may have been the Clovis people,
arriving in the summer to harvest indigenous plants and hunt. Clovis
people coming here were hardy hunters whose prey included wooly
mammoths and other animals that are now extinct.
Due to White hunters, bison numbered only two dozen in Yellowstone
by 1902. Today the herd has grown to 5,000 and more than 600 grizzly
bears live in the park, as well as more than 300 bird species, including
many owl varieties.
42
Yellowstone Celebrates Native American Tribes
April 2022
The Cody people in Yellowstone primarily hunted bison and bear, but
occasionally elk and deer. Their square-stemmed projectile points and
asymmetrical knives were first discovered in Cody, Wyoming, though
more than 70 Cody points and knives have
been found in Yellowstone. The greatest
concentration is near Yellowstone Lake.
At twenty miles long and 14 miles
wide, Yellowstone Lake is North America’s
largest natural high-elevation lake.
The park’s Yellowstone River was first
named Elk River by Native Americans.
Noteworthy, Yellowstone has never been
farmed or logged.
Other native peoples seasonally
migrating across Yellowstone were the
Nez Perce. Relocating from Idaho’s Snake
River, east to the Great Plains, they too
have an ancient association to Yellowstone. And with forty mountain
peaks above 10,000 feet, many are considered Native American
religious sites.
Yellowstone’s 2022 Sesquicentennial signage telling about the lives
of the first inhabitants, their work and spiritual knowledge is welcome
and past due.
Adventure Diva. Her “Must See” travel journeys continue - always
with enthusiasm.

Destination Isn’t Important - Just Enjoy the Trip
By: Vicki Wentz / Vicki’s Voice
To those of you who know me, it will come as
no surprise to hear that I fell down the steps
to my garage yesterday.
F o r
some people, living in the
physical world is no problem.
These are people with whom I
have nothing in common.
Then, there are those of us
who throw ourselves into life
- or traffic without a second
thought. We are the ones who
can’t run or throw a ball - and
certainly not at the same time.
When I was just three, I
wanted to see if any birds were
in our birdbath, but I was too
short to see over the edge, so
I reached up to feel around,
hoping I could catch one (a
reasonable expectation for your average three-year-old brain). Not only
were there no birds in there, but the heavy stone bowl of the birdbath
tipped over on my head, knocking me on my…uh…brain.
April 2022
My mother rushed me to the emergency room, where I met doctors
and nurses I would come to know well over the years. Broken arms,
broken legs, broken or almost-cut-off fingers, falling out of trees, falling
down stairs, falling off kitchen counters, roller skating into folding
chairs, falling off monkey bars,
falling off horses, falling off
bikes, dropping a pot of boiling
water on my feet, and gripping
an exploding glass hurricane -
my life has been full.
Recently, I decided to ride
down the gravel driveway to get
the mail. I had not been on my
bike in a very long time, but you
know what they say: just like
riding a bike! They lie.
As I glided slowly up to the
mailbox, I put my feet down to
stop myself, but having grown
a tad shorter over the years, my
feet didn’t reach the ground, and
instead of jumping off the seat,
I just sat there flailing around until the bike gently fell over sideways,
taking me with it.
I tried to stand up as I fell, but my foot hit a clump of dirt, my ankle
turned and I went all the way down with the bike; just sort of a slowmotion
ballet, which my neighbor definitely observed, although he was
nice enough to turn around and walk the other way pretending he was
oblivious, instead of busting a gut in front of me. Then, yesterday, I fell
down the garage steps. (I was trying to carry a large box containing a
new, semi-heavy juicer I got from my mother, which I’ve moved around
the house for weeks before realizing I have no room for a semi-heavy
juicer in my life! I’d rather eat the freakin’ carrot, Mom!)
I held the box with one hand because I intended to hold the railing
with the other. I’m not an idiot, no matter what you’ve heard.
So, I stepped down onto the first step, reaching for the railing, but the
box swayed me off balance and I fell, watching the cement floor rise up
to meet me. When the crashing and cussing was over, I was on the floor
of the garage, having slammed my head so hard that I definitely saw
little birdies this time.
My dog, Rosie, came running, never wanting to be left out of really
sensational home accidents, and barked appreciatively at me as I
lay there inventorying body parts. Today I’m covered with so much
gorgeous bluish-purple that I’m thinking of dyeing a purse and shoes
to match.
On the upside, this serves as a timely reminder to you all that most
accidents occur in the home...that is, most accidents occur in MY home,
so if I were you I wouldn’t visit.
