Net Vertical Tow Depth: 280-0 m Flowmeter: 3687 In this sample, the small species (lmm). While the large species are sparse in comparison with the larger mesh samples, because of their size differential they still contribute a large proportion of the biomass. No phytoplankton obvious, only a few dinoflagellates (Gonyaulax?, Peridinium?), in contrast with the other 20 pm sample. Net Vertical Tow Depth: 180-0 m There are very few (~100) large species in this sample, mostly Cal anus hv~erboreug. They are obviously numerically dominated by the smaller species. In this sample the most abundant small species is a dinoflagellate, gntativel~ identified as Gonyaulax catenats. This species is present by the million, individual cells (-55 pm) forming small 4-5 celled chains (-200 pm). These phytoplankton chains totally dominate the sample, - making it difficult to see anything else but the largest organisms. Small zooplankters are present, resembling those in the 73pm samples, but with a higher percentage of nauplii and copepodites.
