In this sample, <strong>the</strong> small species (lmm). While <strong>the</strong> large species are sparse <strong>in</strong> comparison with<br />

<strong>the</strong> larger mesh samples, because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir size differential <strong>the</strong>y still<br />

contribute a large proportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biomass. No phytoplankton obvious,<br />

only a few d<strong>in</strong><strong>of</strong>lagellates (Gonyaulax?, Perid<strong>in</strong>ium?), <strong>in</strong> contrast with<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 20 pm sample. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small settled material appears to be<br />

detritus, ra<strong>the</strong>r than copepod nauplii.<br />
