In June 1987, solvent extracted 40 L Teflon bags supplied by<br />

en is Gregor <strong>of</strong> Environment Canada were filled with snow <strong>and</strong> used<br />

to briefly store samples until <strong>the</strong>y could be melted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

alum<strong>in</strong>um melt<strong>in</strong>g tank.<br />

2.4.1 Filtration <strong>and</strong> Extraction<br />

A 142 mm filter with a Gelman AE glass fibre filter <strong>and</strong> an<br />

Amberlite XAD-2 extraction column were connected to <strong>the</strong> stopcock<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> melt water .run out through <strong>the</strong> column at a flow rate <strong>of</strong><br />

less than 100 mL/m<strong>in</strong>.<br />

2.5 Collection <strong>of</strong> Plankton<br />

Nets used for plankton collection were fabricated with<br />

four different mesh sizes <strong>of</strong> Nitex(R) mon<strong>of</strong>ilament nylon cloth.<br />

These <strong>in</strong>clude a 0.75 m diameter by 4 m long net with 20 pm mesh,<br />

a 1 m diameter by 4 m long net with a 73 pm mesh, a 1 m diameter<br />

by 4 m long net with a 253 pm mesh <strong>and</strong> a 1 m diameter by 4 m long<br />

net with a 460 pm mesh.<br />

Mesh sizes were chosen <strong>in</strong> an attempt to adequately filter<br />

<strong>the</strong> water column for <strong>the</strong> normal range <strong>of</strong> plankton size groups.<br />

The nets were cleaned dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first sampl<strong>in</strong>g period by r<strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with glass-distilled acetone <strong>and</strong> hexane prior to deployment.<br />

This clean<strong>in</strong>g method was found impractical given <strong>the</strong><br />

difficulties encountered <strong>in</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g large volumes <strong>of</strong> restricted<br />

*<br />

cargo by air.<br />

A more convenient method <strong>of</strong> net clean<strong>in</strong>g was used for <strong>the</strong><br />

second sampl<strong>in</strong>g trip. An alumnium net conta<strong>in</strong>er, 30 cm <strong>in</strong><br />

diameter <strong>and</strong> 60 high with a bolt-on top <strong>and</strong> teflon O-r<strong>in</strong>g seal,<br />

was fabricated for <strong>the</strong> August trip. This cyl<strong>in</strong>der was<br />

s<strong>and</strong>blasted <strong>and</strong> solvent r<strong>in</strong>sed, <strong>the</strong>n used as a net clean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>er. The freshly cleaned nets were sealed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />

<strong>and</strong> shipped to <strong>the</strong> Ice Isl<strong>and</strong>. The cyl<strong>in</strong>der was <strong>the</strong>n used for<br />

net storage dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sampl<strong>in</strong>g period.
