2.10 Miscellaneous Sampl<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>Chlor<strong>in</strong>ated</strong> <strong>Hydrocarbon</strong>s<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> items on <strong>the</strong> Ice Isl<strong>and</strong> which presented<br />

possibilities for <strong>in</strong>terference were collected for potential<br />

analysis. These <strong>in</strong>cluded shot-hole antifreeze diesel/trichloroethylene<br />

mixture, hydraulic fluid, Kelvar l<strong>in</strong>e, vermiculite,<br />

Geogel explosive, Geogel residues, nitex nett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> hydro-w<strong>in</strong>ch<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

2.11 Water Properties<br />

2.11.1 CTD Pr<strong>of</strong>iles<br />

An Applied Microsystems CTD-12 was used to obta<strong>in</strong><br />

conductivity, temperature, depth pr<strong>of</strong>iles. These were taken at<br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> each trip. The CTD-12 measures conductivity<br />

with an equivalent sal<strong>in</strong>ity accuracy <strong>of</strong> f0.03 PPT with<strong>in</strong> a range<br />

<strong>of</strong> 0 PPT to 41 PPT. Temperature is measured with an accuracy <strong>of</strong><br />

k0.02C with<strong>in</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> -2"to 30°C. Depth is measured with an<br />

accuracy <strong>of</strong> 20.3 m with<strong>in</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> 0 m to 345 m. The data<br />

transmitted from <strong>the</strong> CTD-12 was collected via an RS232 <strong>in</strong>terface<br />

with a TANDY Model 100 computer. Sal<strong>in</strong>ity was calculated from<br />

conductivity, temperature <strong>and</strong> pressure by <strong>the</strong> llUNESCO 1978<br />

PRACTICAL SALINITY SCALE1'. A cable problem did not allow a<br />

direct readout <strong>in</strong> May 1986, but data was stored <strong>in</strong>ternally on<br />

magnetic tape.<br />

Discrete samples for sal<strong>in</strong>ity were obta<strong>in</strong>ed from bottle<br />

casts with 3L PVC Nisk<strong>in</strong> type samplers <strong>in</strong> 300 mL fl<strong>in</strong>t glass<br />

bottles. Samples were analyzed on <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> May <strong>and</strong> returned<br />

to Sidney, B.C. for analysis after <strong>the</strong> second trip.<br />

2.11.2 Nutrients<br />

Samples for dissolved nutrients (reactive silicate, nitrate<br />

<strong>and</strong> orthophosphate) were collected from <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> hydrohole us<strong>in</strong>g
