despatch on the completed overland telegraph brought<br />

the intelligence of his death.<br />

The winter of 1861-2 being the season of a great<br />

and destructive inundation of the Sacramento valley,<br />

the legislature, and the government in all its departments,<br />

was forced to adjourn to San Francisco in January,<br />

at which place the session was continued to its<br />
