One effect of the excessive rains was to deprive of<br />

employment a very large number of mechanics and<br />

laborers, owing to the cessation of building and other<br />

operations. For a week or two about one thousand<br />

were employed at the Golden Gate park, subscriptions<br />

to the amount of over $30,000 being raised for that<br />

purpose by the citizens of San Francisco, and a<br />

further amount forwarded from Seattle being refused<br />
