minorities. The center promoted the following activities:
Training: CONTACT Centers conducted 37 seminars,
most of them being organized in partnership with
donor organizations and other NGOs.
Information: In 1999 CONTACT continued the publication
of the CONTACT information newsletter.
Information materials for the Center’s library were also
purchased. One of the most popular services is Internet.
The CONTACT web page was visited by more than
18000 users. Monthly meetings of the NGOs clubs were
organized in all CONTACT Centers, as well as Students’/
Volunteer’s club meetings.
Consulting: More than 200 national and local
NGOs were assisted by the Chiøinæu office and more
than 100 by the regional offices.
Technical assistance: More than 1100 requests for
technical assistance were satisfied: copies, phone, computer
use for NGOs and for the initiative groups that
intend to create an NGO.

Time line: 3 years
The project started in April 1998, as a response to
requests of non-governmental organizations and initiative
groups from Moldovan regions and as a result of
evaluating the projects developed by the CONTACT
Center.
The objectives of the project are:
– to support local community leaders in creating
non-governmental organizations
– to facilitat access of rural NGOs to national and
international info resources
– to consolidate organizations’ capacity through
training and assistance
The geography of the project includes three areas
in the northern part of Moldova and three in the south.
The promotional campaign of the project includes video
and audio clips, a booklet, the CONTACT bulletin,
posters, and a conclusion briefing.

The purpose of this program is to facilitate the participation
of academics from the Republic Moldova,
including Ph.D. candidates, in various international
meetings which take place outside the country to present
a scientific paper in the field of fundamental and
medical-biological sciences. In 1999 sixty-eight financial
aid requests were submitted. Partial financial support
was provided to forty candidates selected on a
competitive basis.
