Adults typically exhibit earlier bedtimes, earlier

wake times, and less sleep consolidation.

Compared to younger adults, older persons

(65+) have been reported to awaken 1.5 hours

earlier and go to bed an hour earlier (20 to

30). Men tend to suffer more overnight awakenings

and spend longer in stage N1 sleep,

which makes them more likely to report feeling

sleepy during the day.

Women seem to have greater trouble falling

asleep and tend to stay in slow wave sleep

longer than males. In addition, the first few

months after giving birth and throughout

pregnancy are when daytime sleepiness increases.
