Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) 3 is a technology developed by Sandia<br />

National Laboratories. As illustrated in Figure 2.8, a high power laser travels through the<br />

center of a deposition head and is focused to a small spot by one or more lenses.<br />

Powdered material supplied coaxially to the focus is melted by the laser beam. The X-Y<br />

table is moved in raster fashion to fabricate each layer of the object. As each layer is<br />

completed, the deposition head moves up vertically by one layer thickness relative to the<br />

X-Y table to let the structure evolve.<br />
