The advantages of composite materials fall under three headings: first, composites enable a unique combination of properties to be achieved; second, the resulting properties can be made to vary continuously over a range; third, composites can sometimes attain a value of a given physical property not attainable by either of the two components alone. 43 Examples of composite materials and their applications are given in Table 2.6. 56
