For the Love of Trees By Susan Iedema, London • from Daytripping Nov-Dec 2018 As I have grown older, things that I am sure I took for granted as a child, I now appreciate. Trees are one of those things. Old black and white pictures, taken after an ice storm, depict the damage done to the trees around the house where I grew up. Broken, ice covered branches lay strewn about as larger limbs burdened with the ice, hang low above them. Other trees look as if they are ready to split in two. One of the trees damaged was my mom’s favourite, the birch tree. As my dad prepared to go outside and start the cleanup, my mom’s familiar warning that he better not cut down her birch tree rang out. In the summer, large maples on the west side of our house made the porch located there a cool place to sit after supper. Behind the garage, pieces of wood nailed up the trunk of a tree invited one to climb and find my brother’s treehouse hidden within the large branches. My dad regularly helped clear dead wood from a forested lot owned by a friend. This wood served as fire wood for both parties. My dad confided in me one day that he could take a chair and sit in that forest for hours. Maybe not then, but now I understand what he meant. I can sit for hours in my own backyard taking in the wonders of nature. Even my sister told me recently, out of the blue, of her love of trees. In my current back yard, a number of trees outline the yard. Large pine trees at the back grow on a slant and make me hope, when wind storms come, that their roots are strong. The eerie sound of the wind through their branches brings back another childhood memory of passing a property with pines that produced the same spooky sound. A sound that seemed to raise the hairs on the back of my neck and urged me to run for my life! On the east side of our yard, cedar trees provide morning shade giving us a place to sit in warm weather and have our morning coffee break. The maple tree on a neighbouring property will always remind me of the original owner who told me that her late husband planted that tree many years ago. Late in the day, this tree takes over the job of providing shade to our yard. I guess my love of trees was also witnessed by my excitement and anticipation when the city sent a notice announcing the planting of a tree in front of our house. I awaited the arrival like a new parent and watered her from a pail during a recent drought. Most days I can hardly wait to get outside for a walk in the nearby park. If I pick the right entrance a majestic willow greets me. More gnarly and knotty ones, which I think are beautiful, await me further along.
