The Expertise of Six Year Olds

Six year olds are inquisitive
and open to knowledge.
Everyone should have one,
even if only for a few hours.
Our six year old grandson,
Jordan was out visiting and
having a private birthday
party with us. I took him
shopping so he could select
his own gifts. However, it
was Grandpa who had the pleasure of
teaching him how to use them. Lessons
included putting batteries into a new
flashlight and firing his bow and arrow
at the target. Jordan spent a lot of time
licking the suction cup of his arrow, then,
gave a yell of delight when it finally stuck
on target. This was another success story
to be added to his six years on Planet
Earth.
After dinner, and while working in the
garden, Grandpa discovered a partly
decomposed cat under the brush pile.
As Jordan watched Grandpa burying it he
declared, “That was probably a perfectly
good cat at one time.”
Next, a conversation ensued about the
mysteries of death. “Why,” ask Jordan,
“did the eyes of the cat stay
open?”
“Well,” explained Grandpa,
“sometimes humans die with
their eyes open too.”
Jordan silently took in this
information, then raised his
blue eyes to meet Grandpa’s
brown ones and spoke his
six year old wisdom. “I guess
people could die of a heart attack and not
have time to close their eyes.”
Grandpa smiled and nodded.
Watching my grandson with his grandpa,
I realized how necessary it is for boys to
have adult male companionship. Adults
who enjoy explaining, showing, and
doing things with children contribute
enormously to their well-being. In return,
boys remind adults to be open to the joys
and mysteries of life.
“Age,” wrote Goeth, “does not make
us childish. It only finds us true children
still.” Fortunately, in everyone’s days of
seriousness there are six year olds who
have an unplanned, uncanny expertise
to bring smiles to both Grandma’s and
Grandpa’s faces.
