My father, an avid fisherman, towed me around with him all my childhood in his little aluminum boat fishing for bluegill and panfish. I spent a great deal of my childhood riding around Mitchell’s Bay in my bathing suit and lifejacket. My father would throw me overboard with a rope and I’d float along merrily beside the boat. But my favourite part was always being with my dad. My father is a special kind of fisherman. He is a fly fishman. Like most of his kind he has spent many years teaching himself how to cast. Sometimes he would even practice casting in our backyard with a cork on the end and I would pretend to be a fish and grab his line. It was something I found more amusing than he did, but it provided me with hours of fun. He even makes his own flies, something he has developed quite a talent for over the years. I, however, had my own method of fly fishing as a child. See, I was a pretty excitable child, and when I would hook a fish I would get very excited. So excited I would pull the fish clear out of the water and through the air to the other side of the boat. Usually I would flip it back and forth across the boat a few times before tossing it into the boat. On one trip, we came across a boat full of men who stopped to talk to my father. The men sat and talked for what felt like forever, so I decided to put my line back in the water. After only a few minutes I had a fish on. Like any kid, I didn’t care at all that my father was busy, and I didn’t care about what those men thought of my expert fishing technique. With a flick of the wrist I had that fish up in the air and on the other side of the boat. The men let out a roar of laughter. I didn’t care, I just kept going, flipping the fish back and forth across the boat. My poor embarrassed father grabbed my rod and brought it in, then sent me back to the water. Again, moments later I hooked another one, and off it flew through the air like a majestic bird. The men could barely contain themselves. This went on and on. I must have caught 10 fish in the time my father visited with these men. Each time my father would come rescue the poor fish and put it in the live well. We fished all day like that, until our well was overflowing with flying fish. I don’t fish like that anymore, but I still look forward to every summer when I can sit on a dock and exchange words with my father. Some of my best memories are beside the water with my dad. Don’t worry, it’s not Christmas time again, but it is a time filled with people jostling about, on the hunt for that very special item at that very special “sale” price. You know what I mean. Yard sale season! Myself, I fall somewhere between an amateur and a well seasoned fanatic in both buying and selling. I do not like “early birds” and I am certainly not one of them, but I do manage to make it out of the house in somewhat decent time. I do not like to leave home without my hot drink, money (lots of change), route list, map, snack and hand wipes. Although I’d prefer to work alone so I can move quickly, I have a small companion who loves to share this quality time with me and has her own baggage to bring: drink, snack, her “own” money to spend etc. That’s okay by me, I enjoy our time together.
