THE THECLUB North Side of Michigan Avenue Looking West, Point Edward, circa 1920 Point Edward’s history aptly demonstrates how the arrival of a rail line could trigger remarkable growth in an already established community. Named in tribute to Queen Victoria’s father, Edward, the Duke of Kent, but also known as Huron Village until the 1860s, the Point boomed when the Grand Trunk Railway designated the place as the western terminus for its northern branch. To “bridge” the St. Clair, the Grand Trunk constructed a large car ferry facility at Point Edward in the late 1850s. To accommodate ferrying operations, the railroad also laid out a vast rail yard in the village. Not surprisingly, Grand Trunk workers poured into the place. In 1866, a directory publisher described the rail centre in one simple word: “flourishing.” Point Edward incorporated as a village in 1878. Despite repeated overtures from its rather covetous neighbour, Sarnia, the Point has remained “progressively independent” ever since. O.E. Evans photo, Lambton Heritage Museum Courtesy of Glen C. We’re all getting older, we may as well laugh about it! Rope Skipping Back in time... to a much simpler lifestyle. An era without TV, computers, cell phones or iPods. Back to a time when kids made their own fun.. What did they do? They entertained themselves with their own games. Games that changed with the season and in which the kids themselves set the rules and arbitrated decisions. Kids swarmed the streets. Sent out with the admonition “Come in when the streetlights come on,” children were on their own. No adult interference presumed to make rules in the activities that followed. As the seasons changed, so too did the games. Relievo, a somewhat violent contest pitted two teams, the IN team and the OUT team, against one another. It was played mostly by boys. One team attempting to capture members of the other by patting one of the OUTs three times on the back. Great were the struggles to prevent this after being surrounded by the INs. Girls were more decorous. One of their chief games was rope skipping. Not the type of solo skipping used by boxers to enhance their footwork but something that was almost equally demanding. First a long stretch of rope was taken up after shouts of “no ender.” Those who failed to get the call out in time had to begin the session being rope turners. The two turners stood facing each other about 12 feet apart. Everyone else lined up to one side and took a turn running into the revolving rope and often chanting a sing- By Glynn A. Leyshon, London from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2010 song rhyme in rhythm to the slap of the rope on the pavement. They skipped both feet clearing the rope at once. They were actually jumping rope. One of the chants to accompany the skipping was: Grapes on the vine Ready to be picked One fell off and did the splits. At this juncture the skipper landed on both feet attempting to capture the rope between her feet. Failing to do so meant she had to trade places with one of the rope turners. A better test of agility and timing was “double dutch.” In this type of skipping, the rope turners stood facing one another with the rope around the waist of one and extending to surround the waist of the other so that two ropes could be turned simultaneously, one by each hand and in opposite directions – left hand clockwise and right hand counter clockwise. Now it became a challenge of agility and timing for one had to jump in quickly and skip on alternate feet twice as fast as with a single rope turning. It was a good workout. One of the patters to go with the skipping was: On the corner lives a lady Who she is I do not know All she wears is gold and silver All she eats are ice cream cones It might be a good thing to encourage more double dutch on playgrounds and streets of today.
