THE CHALLENGE

The Sustainable Truck of the Year Awards are asseigned yearly by
a professional jury in three categories: Tractor, Distribution, Van.
The nominees (three per each category) will be announced at the
beginning of 2024. The awarding ceremony of the STY 2024 is
scheduled in Spring, next year.
The EU Energy Council held on October
17 confirmed the CO2 emission reduction
targets: -15% in 2025 (already planned),
-45% from 2030 (previously it was -30%),
-65% from 2035, and -90% percent from 2040,
compared to 2019. At the same time postponing
the possibility of including biofuels as ‘eligible
in the future’ until 2027. Such decisions are
being made while one of the new players in ZE
transportation, namely Volta Trucks, has just
filed for bankruptcy, Arrival (van) drastically
reduces plans, Iveco’s former partner Nikola is
in trouble, and Tesla’s long-awaited Semi truck
remains quite controversial. And while biofuels,
if one adopts the ‘well to wheel’ method
of calculating CO2 emissions, thus considering
the entire production cycle, show that they can
cut CO2 by 90 percent.
In such a context, the Sustainable Truck of the
Year Awards aim to reward vehicles that meet
the concept of sustainability declined on several
fronts: from emissions to safety, up to social
and economic impact. Thus, if for the Van and
Distribution categories the transition to electric
seems desirable, as well as possible and somehow
economically sustainable, it’s far more
challenging when it comes to road tractors.
The Award

award that

sustainability in
the field of trucks
and vans, the STY
rewards yearly
three vehicles
that stands out
within several
aspects such as
safety; comfort;
recyclability of
components;
connectivity; brand
commitment on
sustainability.
