Resistance Exercise Bands
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
As I shared previously, I broke my leg last
Christmas Eve. I elected to pass on surgery
and although I’m not sure if that was my wisest
decision, I’m too
far to turn back now.
I’m still in a leg brace and still going
to physical therapy but I’m now able to
travel and have found my best new travel
companion! The resistance exercise
bands I use in PT are great to carry for
exercising on the go. They are small,
easy to pack, easy to use, inexpensive and
very effective.
I’ve never really worked out much,
although I should have. I’m now
learning lots of new things about
exercise.
For example: How using resistance bands strengthening exercises
helps to build muscle. I can really tell the difference when using them.
Both at home and while traveling, doing things like leg lifts or arm
exercises (for flabby arms) using the bands really allows you to work
the muscles much more. There are articles that state these little bands
are like using weights, and in some instances are even more effective.
Other studies say using the bands while exercising will also help melt
fat. Sadly, I have not seen any personal evidence of that.
The bands are color coded based on strength of resistance. There are
different types, some with handles which are bigger overall.
I bought the 5-color coded flat bands. They were $10.00 on Amazon
although there are many available
online.
Should you opt for the ones with
handles be extra careful! Used incorrectly
or without enough strength, they can
snap and potentially hit you. Use those
with caution.
As with all things, if you have physical
health issues, always check with your
doctor before trying something new. As
we age, lots of conditions should guide
the kinds of exercises we do.
My favorite thing to do if I do nothing
else to do, is to stretch every day. Being physically fit is good for our
health and makes us look younger too!
The U.S. population age 65 and older has grown
38.6% in the past 10 years alone. There is now
a large population of women who even though
the number says one
thing, they don’t look or feel their age.
Not only do individuals age gracefully,
but they also have many outside interests
like travel, social clubs, the arts, and sports
to keep them busy on a daily basis. With
that being said, fashion has become ever
more important.
Thinking back to when I was a child and
watching my mother put on a beautiful
two piece skirt combo that was paired with
lovely faux pearl earrings and necklace,
she looked simply stunning. What an indelible impression that left on
my young mind.
Granted that was the 60s and nowadays, the styles are not all that
impressive for aging women. It’s apparent that designers stop creating
more fashionable looks once you pass through your 50s. Why is that??
Recently, my sister was visiting from Alaska and wanted to shop, as
we often do. I helped show her how to bring updated fashions into play
28
How to be Fashionable Regardless of Age
December 2023
by creating a modern look.
Black pleated pants, paired with a long black sleeve shirt, with a
keyhole neckline. Next we added multicolored drop style earrings and
matching bracelet, and a lovely black/white swirl jacket with an artistic
flair and topped off the ensemble with two
inch black suede pumps.
The result was a chic look and provided
her with an abundance of confidence that
garnered several compliments. This one
outfit changed her mind that women can
and do look great after 50.
Maybe as a new project, I’ll take on the
idea of creating fashions for women past
a certain age? Not likely, as I’m aging
gracefully and enjoying my free time with
family and friends.
As Robert Browning quotes, “Grow old
with me! The best is yet to be.” Happiest of Holidays to you and your
family, whether they’re near or far!
