Living in the now or getting lost in it?
The challenge of “mindfulness” and “living in the now”
(which are concepts I have never really understood
anyway) is the risk of losing yourself in the curse of The
Now. The present moment is but a fraction of time,
flashing by in the ever flow of the yesterday blending
into the tomorrow. Focus too much on The Now and
you risk forgetting where you came from and where you
are moving towards. For me, I see myself in a flow
outside of time and even outside of space.
Keep in mind that there is a difference between the way
we experience the world, the way we describe it and the
way it actually is.
Human beings are probably the only species on the
planet with any relation to or consideration of time. A
popular genre of books is biographies. People love to
watch documentaries on TV about past times. We love
to remember. In a way, that is one definition of time. If
there was no memory, there would be no time, just an
endless eternity of present moments.
Animals live in the present moment, yet without paying
any attention to it. This is an important realization.
Paradoxically, they really do live “In The Now”; however
they are not aware of it. That is how and why it works
for them.
Events versus time
From a spiritual point of view, try to see things from this
perspective: Think in terms of “events”, of “energy”,
maybe of “causality”. That way, a future event might
very well influence an event that took place in the past.
That is why it is possible to perform a Shamanic
ceremony and alter something that happened in the
past; change the energetic vibrations of it, how you
remember it and what impact it had (and still has) on the
future. You can also influence something that will
happen in the future. With that view, it is no longer
necessarily so that events are successive, in the way
that an event is connected with a certain time and that
the future follows after the present, like Wednesday
follows Tuesday. If Wednesday and Tuesday are events,
they do not really have to follow each other in any
particular order. They are free-standing events, each
one in its own right.
