EXTRA-ORDINARY
CHANNELS
Extra-ordinary channels of traditional
Chinese Acupuncture and their
relationship to the 'Taiji Pole’
Apart from the 12 regular meridians that are
commonly used in Acupuncture there are at least
another twelve ‘extra-ordinary channels’ (or meridians)
which form the blueprint for the growth and
development of the physical body. These are known
by various names. In English - the Strange Flows, the
Extraordinary Conduits and the Eight Marvellous
Ones, are just three.
These meridians, which run deep within our bodies,
supply the 12 regular meridians with Qi (energy),
enabling support of our DNA, our ‘genetic heritage’, or
in Chinese terms our ‘ancestry’. In TCM (traditional
Chinese medicine) and kinesiology, we acknowledge
that the Governing and Central meridian channels are
the only extraordinary channels to have their own
acupuncture points, that is they are not shared. It has
been documented that six of the extraordinary
channels share acu-points with other points on the
twelve regular bilateral meridians, depending on
where they flow, however this information has since
been upgraded.
There are other extraordinary channels which have
their own independent acu-points, and corresponding
muscle/meridian relationships. The extraordinary
channels integrate, strengthen, store and regulate the
circulation of Qi in the regular meridians to maintain a
state of balance and harmony. They link all of the Yin
and Yang energy through the fascia of the physical
body to nourish and provide energy to the organs.
