Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 26
Let us imagine that it is 14:30pm. Within the 60 minutes
of the hours between 14:00 and 15:00, 30 minutes are
in the past and the remaining 30 minutes belong to the
future. 30 minutes have already happened and 30
minutes are yet to take place. In the exact moment in
between is the present. However, the present moment
can be divided into one fraction of a moment that is in
the past and one that is in the future. Supposedly, you
live in the present moment. But when is that really? As
we have seen, it is very brief. Before we know it, it will
have disappeared into the mist of past times, whilst
simultaneously being replenished with fresh time
arriving from the future. It seems as if there are a
number of infinitesimally short moments of present time
that keep replacing each other.
The way I see it, time as used and interpreted by people
is an invention to make it easier to plan and control our
lives. A traditional clock, with hands moving around the
circular dial, is simply a device to make it easier for us to
catch a train, meet a friend, or go to work before the
boss notices that we are missing. Life is a chain of
events (as Immanuel Kant would have it) and a clock
provides one way of measuring the distance between
them, just as a map will show you the geographic
location and physical distance between two places or
events.
All the time you need
It has been said that you have the time you need. You
may not always feel that this is the case. “If only I had
more time”, people often say. Yet, that notion is more
often related to anxiety, a sense of inadequacy or
shortcoming, rather than really not having enough time.
I mentioned that time is not a commodity. This means
that one person cannot access more of it than anyone
else. If something is due tomorrow, we all have the same
number of minutes until the hour strikes. Yet, is that
really true, from a spiritual point of view? There is
interplay between time and action. Time can stretch,
flex and be malleable. I truly believe that Spirit has a
hand in this. I claim that the expression “We made it just
in time!” is more often heard than “Damn, we missed it”.
You do have all the time you need. Just remove your
watch and avoid paying any attention to time. Time
does not really exist anyway.
